Or am I the only fan on here?

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 29 December 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone's been watching a little too much SpikeTV.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 29 December 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

I'm watching them in the round by actor. like so:

Dr No
OHMSS
L&LD
Living Daylights
Goldeneye
Casino Royale
FRWL
MWTGG
Licence to Kill
TND
...
etc, meaning I'll finish with the inimitable VTAK

notes so far:

1. I always forget how stupid these movies are

2. Timothy Dalton is actually better than Roger Moore NO ARGUING SHUT UP

3. Anytime the main business of a Bond villain is drug smuggling, the country they operate from has its name changed to some fake shit. this is the only time it happens, though. In Dr. No they just call it Jamaica - eleven years later it's "San Monique." And "The Republic of Isthmus?" Lame.

4. Dalton, Moore, probably Craig and arguably Connery all got their hottest girls right out of the gate. Lazenby obviously has no other girls for comparison but if you're going to be one and done you might as well take Diana Rigg. I could make a graph and show the declining quality of girls after debut for each Bond, but probably ought to wait until DC has at least three or four under his belt.

5. Pierce Brosnan still sucks

saw some of 'living daylights' (fucking great) yesterday and was gonna start a poll on this. can't believe there hasn't been one.

one? there needs to be like nine polls for bond. best bond, best bond girl, best felix, best villain, best gadget, on and on. I think we need a schedule, perhaps a project plan

El Tomboto, Sunday, 10 February 2008 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

my favorite part of TLD is when the mujahideen show up in the lounge immediately after kara's big concert with her bullet-riddled stradivarius purchased with drug & gun money by a rogue kgb agent and M + the Soviet general are just like "ok, there's the mujahideen, just a bit of fun so let's be cool"

El Tomboto, Sunday, 10 February 2008 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it was just going to be a preliminary poll. best pre-credits sequences, best music, best secret base and whatnot to follow.

How could anyone ever consider Diamonds Are Forever as the worst Bond film? Multiple Blofields! Las Vegas! "Named after your father, perhaps?"! Moonbuggies!

Mr. Wint & Mr. Kidd!!

Seeing TLD yesterday reminded me how complex it's plot is - at least relative to other Bond films. Drugs, diamonds, weapons, double crosses, etc.. It's also probably the most under-rated Bond film.
Diamonds is my favourite Connery Bond film, it has the excellently crepey Wint & Kidd ["Mrs Whistler did say she wanted some pictures of the canals for the children"], and Charles Gray as my favourite Blofeld [a great understated performance].

i don't think i've ever grasped the plot of 'the living daylights'.

-smiert spionem: the russians are trying to wipe out mi6
-OR ARE THEY??
-yes in that they take down two agents in the first scene
-but perhaps it's a renegade op?
-fake defector who is allowed to escape easily but is then brought back in an insanely high-risk operation
-american arms dealer in cahoots with defector
-the war in afghanistan

i can't fit these things together.

The Wikipedia article has a good plot synopsis - basically Koskov and Whitaker play East and West off against each other so they can do their opium/diamonds/arms deal.

snoball, Sunday, 10 February 2008 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i went to wiki and couldn't understand that either! i guess the guy in gibraltar is in with koskov and 'necros' (subtle) on the whole fake-but-real assassinations programme? who could have anticipated blowback. fuck it it's still my favourite.

2. Timothy Dalton is actually better than Roger Moore NO ARGUING SHUT UP

Absolutely. Living daylights is my third favourite Bond film (After From Russia... and Casino Royale).

I'm fully in favour of a poll, BTW.

Yay acrimony!

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 10 February 2008 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
