Also, what's the difference?

I read that one of them is best enjoyed when you are at that trance-like stage before you fall asleep. I like the sound of that.

Sounds a barrel.

there's a great scene in "early summer" where they show the family watching a kabuki performance but they don't know the performance--you just see the old uncles total rapturous delight as he listens to it (and the sounds coming from the performance are really something else--guttural and seemingly very melodramatic), and later they discuss the performance around the dinner table. in other ozu films you do get to see the performances.

i meant to write "show the family watching the performance but YOU DON'T SEE the performance"

sorry

Kabuki - Fiorucci Pop
Noh - spartan theatre.
I definitely prefer Noh. Kabuki feels like a circus - it's for the PEOPLE. Noh is for snotty intellectuals. hah!

This was the advice my Japanese friend gave me when we went to a Noh play. It lasted 4 hours! I slept for an hour.

"Noh" is good if you can get the "H" on a double letter square combined with another word. "Kabuki" is more or less useless because it has two "K"s in it, unless you have a blank tile, in which case it would be shweet because it's seven letters.

No it isn't.

Oh. Right. Uh ... I was bluffing?

jewelly (jewelly), Monday, 29 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

but to answer the question, i like the traditional shamisen and koto style music most. i fell asleep for about 1/3rd of a 75 minute kabuki matinee (i believe it was a 4 hour performance in total), i haven't done noh yet.

Shit, man, a perfectly good Scrabble joke destroyed by miscounting. My day is ruined.
