Mobs

Not talking about peaceful demonstrations - I mean straight-up mobs. Flipping over newspaper machines, burning garbage cans, pelting the fuzz with stones... chaos and mayhem in a civil society.

Have you been in a good mob, or watched from the sidelines? And what about mobs in popular culture, i.e. the pitchfork and torch wielding mobs in 'Frankenstein' and 'To Kill A Mockingbird?' Mob pics also, please.

i went out for a few days during the anti-war protests to take pictures. it was pretty freaky at times. the second day i was out, i was following a break off faction of anarchist gutter punks and got caught up in a sweep. kids were getting hit with billy clubs left and right. the whole 300 of us got arrested. it was an 8hr process where i was stuck in the middle of a street, handcuffed and had to wait on a bus and in a gigantic warehouse - the whole time i had to pee like a fucking racehorse. not fun at all. i eventually had to go to court and it was dismissed.

here are pictures from the first day of protests. i have pictures from the second day, but i never got around to scanning them.

columbus, ohio on football days. burning couches in the street, fans running wild, police helicopters... not nearly as picturesque as the pitchfork & torch brigades in black & white films. i have a huge soft spot for those.

Erm, no, I try to avoid mobs. Good old Uncle George kinda turned us off them for several generations... ;-)

I've only witnessed drunken celebratory mobs revelling in college athletics victories, albeit drunken celebratory mobs revelling in college athletics victories who happened to uproot shrubberies and throw glass bottles into densely populated areas and tip over news vans etc. Sometimes I'm amazed at how fucked up my town is.

Did they actually tar and feather people at the Boston Tea Party?

I watched parts of Los Angeles burn from atop Mulholland Dr. during the LA riots. I wouldn't call that couple of days a "good" riot though.

I just noticed that ominous noose in the tree... the Boston Tea and Lynching of the Tarred & Feathered British Agent Party. Must have been a hoot.

(Serious: I have witnessed/been part of the tearing down and parading of at least three different football goalposts. This is mobbing for no damn good reason and in retrospect it was completely horrible)
