Man, I wish my scanner worked. I just found the motherload of spooky teenage art while I was cleaning out my closet. (No, not Eminem stylee, don't worry.) Ever wondered what would happen to a teenage goth who took loads of acid, read conspiracy theory junk and listened to Spacemen 3? Wonder no more!

Well, wonder loads cause the scanner don't work, like I said.

the river fleet, Sunday, 25 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Get them scanned soon. Er, please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 January 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Dreaming Spires artwork was great. You'd have loved it, Ned. (You'd have loved the Spires, as well, but that's another story.) There's one with tentacles and spires and seraphatic roses and expanding fish-eye universe. Damn. Project for the week, get the scanner working.

the river fleet, Sunday, 25 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, hey if we're talking teenage work, then I have this. It features the Manics, please note I was only 17 when I made this. This was before the internet, that's how old this picture is. Do you remember Select magazine?

Here is an example of my drawing, poetry and music.

Johann Sebastian Bach
was a genius of cantatas, of masses, of fugues.
No man's surpassed he in fact --
Except perhaps Wendy Carlos and her masses of Moogs.

Charles Hatcher (musenheddo), Monday, 26 January 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, I can't get the scanner to work. But, while I was digging through the hard drive, I found some old doodles that I did which are enjoyably psychedelic. Not the really wild stuff with the tentacles and the serapatic roses, but pretty pretty regardless.

Warning: these files are HUGE and I cannot resize them cause there is no photoshop on this machine. :-(

Kate, it's weird (cool weird) but your old art there is a bit like a more focused version of the kind of thing I used to do sometimes - http://www.imagemagician.com/filelist.php?large_view=bwhs.jpg

the river fleet, Monday, 26 January 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

oops... duh. hehe - I guess you can't see that unless you're me. This one should work:

Kim (Kim), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

but the dumbass 'freeform' way I chose to draw her hand and legs makes me want to claw my own face off now.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Kim, that is (cool) weirdly similar! Especially to some of the stuff that I found in my sketchbooks. The mixture of figures and abstract patterns. Except you seem to favour straight lines and zig-zags and I favour curves and spirals. I like it!

the river fleet, Monday, 26 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I did that probably in the very late 80s - the unnofficial decade of the triangle, so that might explain my phase with ze zigs and zags. You're right though I think. I found another one as well - I still like this, just wish I hadn't put in that odd business sprouting from the top of her head.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it almost looks tatoo-ish, very bold lines. nice!

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, looks like a Russian Vorticist! (Or was it Futurist? Design was so long ago.)

Geocities is being a bitch right now, (so check back in a little while) but for eirie synchronicity, look at the hair on her:

Yep - can't see it now, but will surely check tomorrow. =)

Kim (Kim), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

still can't see it. try again?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ok - works now. That is quite spooky.

Can you give us a bit of context? Who is LAS VEGAS, where is she standing, are those hair curlers, etc?

En Moog (Stevie D), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

i think you'll find that LAS VEGAS is an AWESOME CHICK making her way through this crazy thing called LIFE

(all else is superfluous)

plax (ico), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Haha. It's from a film I haven't finished yet, just a small portrait of the possibly soon-to-be-demolished Hollywood Park racetrack near LAX. It used to be frequented by a ton of old movie stars, now it's kinda fallen on hard times and it's a huge piece of real estate right by the airport in an area (Inglewood) ripe for "regeneration".

We are looking at the jockeys with their entourages entering the racetrack. LAS VEGAS is part of jockey in green's entourage. A lot of the race teams are Latino, as are the spectators/gamblers.

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

NOT hair curlers

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, I just grabbed from FCP and cropped so they could look better. But U get the idea. I should really finish this thing before they tear it down!

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

What's your ETA? When is it getting demolished?

En Moog (Stevie D), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

They keep renewing their lease on an annual basis. I'm not sure if the Fall season has been confirmed yet. So...could be this year, next year. I just went and started shooting a couple of rolls of 16mm for fun, but I feel like I should make it into a short project. It is hard because TBH it isn't always that exciting a place. A lot of the time it is 1/4 full and has this sadness about it. But I was hoping I could capture some of that without embellishing it too much. I was going to say "aestheticizing" it too much but honestly 16mm imbues everything with such a sense of nostalgia that it would be disingenous to say so.

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

I like that it is empty and sad and yet they still have all this ceremony and protocol with the outfits and the bizarre topiary and of course the horses are amazing to look at up close.

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I have to confess I haven't done more because I'm not sure how to shape all the footage. I wanted it to be just kind of observational, simple, almost ambient, just direct sound and image. But it was hard to find a progression through the images I had.

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Please let me watch it when you are done?

En Moog (Stevie D), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

Of course! I was thinking maybe of trying something like Chanta Akerman did in L'Est, but it's tougher to pull off than it looks, this "ambient" thing I'm talking about:

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

and D'Est, sorry. It's a great film.

life behind bras (admrl), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

idk if this will work. a couple of paintings i had in an exb. recently. you dont really get the detail in photographs hard as that is to believe looking at them.

plax (ico), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

lolol at Chanta Ackerman

En Moog (Stevie D), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

past few years i've mostly just been messing around doing stuff for sponsored contests with facebook's graffiti app (and sometimes winning) and the odd bit of nerdy concept art.

have posted some of it to my flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/grimstitch/

Kim, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

T that is some rad hard-edged abstraction!

AVANT-ELECTRO METAL IST KRIIIIIIIEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGG (acoleuthic), Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

am getting a kinda act-of-love vibe off of them - but they are also different from each other because one has two integral triangles* and the other cuts off the corners - latter then is v muscular and dynamic, former more austere and frozen in place

*although one triangle is only made so by the edge and hints at a larger (sadder) truth - we only see the tip, barely touching its downwardly-angled, almost ignorant counterpart?

AVANT-ELECTRO METAL IST KRIIIIIIIEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGG (acoleuthic), Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

lol - plax - is the way they were installed a Carl Andre reference?

sarahel, Saturday, 14 August 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

haha that was the curators brainwave.
