A Thread To Discuss The New Comedy Series on British TV This Week

Thus far:

Director's Commentary (ITV, Wednesday evenings). Rob Brydon does spoof DVD director's commentaries. His one for Bonanza was great. His one for The Duchess Of Duke Street less so.

Frasier (C4, Wednesday evenings). Last series. Was watching Director's Commentary at the time.

Garth Merenghi's Darkplace (C4, Thursday evenings). 2001 Perrier Award winner takes his time getting to telly with spoof 1980's supernatural hospital drama with guns. I thought it was brilliant myself, yet somehow I can't see many/any agreeing.

Tonight:

Sex & The City (C4)
Banzai (C4)
Futurama Series 4 (C4 - technically it's Saturday morning, yes. 2AM Saturday morning. Thanks Channel 4. Thanks everso)

I've probably missed a couple... I think BBC2's Saturday night pairing (Grass & Still Game) already have their own threads, but I dunno. There is also some other stuff that I would appear to have forgotten. Oh well.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Still Game is brilliant / Don't miss it.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Missed dark place due to being at work, it looks great from the trailers so I will surely be disappointed. Still game was fucking brilliant. Todays C4 output will be watched today as no live shows mean no clients in the office till late so I can switch their awful TV off the big screen.

Ed (dali), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it great how Banzai hasn't had any advertising this time round? Can't move for ads for Sex & The City and NY Graham Norton, but Banzai and, odder still, Six Feet Under have got the shaft.

Is 6FU's new timeslot next to NYPD Blue supposed to be some sort of 'graveyard shift' pun or something?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Also not, TV but 'The Sunday Format' is back on the radio, and they are repeating Night Class (Johnny Vegas' best work).

Ed (dali), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Slightly disappointed by the second episode of 'Still Game'...dipped below the level of the previous week's brilliance, the best thing in it was the bloke who was barred, and his adventures. Obv. still eagerly anticipating tomorrow's episode.
'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace' was very good, partly beecause you could see there was so much potential in it and room for improvement in the scripting. How fantastic was the Latin doctor's Tom Baker voice? If this progresses to a second series it could be as good a horror/comedy thing as League of Gentlemen.

And FUCK i missed Futurama (had a tape ready for it and everything!)

pete s, Friday, 30 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete - you haven't. It's tonight.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah. Duh. You know why this is. I did the weekly shop yesterday instead of today due to a day off and ive ended up confused......

pete s, Friday, 30 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The 3rd series of 6FU is reputedly a bit poor, so maybe that's why. :-(

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I thought this would be a thread for Mad About Alice (which I haven't actually watched). Someone tell me it's good for a laugh.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. What do we think of 'Revolver'?

pete s, Friday, 30 January 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst sketch show since, oooh, Pulp Video.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 30 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Darkplace fucking roXXXXXoRRRRRRRRRRSSS!!! Very clever too.

DVD Commentary -- didn't Adam and Joe do this with 'The Priory'. Good anyway.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

A+J also did numerous DVD skits on Shock Video.
Still Game on saturday was just exceptionally brilliant. As i said (elsewhere) this will be a future classic.

pete s, Monday, 2 February 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I am glad to see some ppl liking Dark Place - I want to like it more than I do and I love all the things it references, but the monotony of the Acorn Antiques jokes wore out half way through - and I can't see much room for the series to climb out of this hole of a format. Having said that I larfed a lot at the ppl pushing a trolley down a corridor and having to stop because the corridor ended just out of sight.

Has anyone else watched this having seen Von Trier's The Kingdom - I found it sort of undermined the show's setting.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

gah when are these things on? i should really read a TV guide for first time in ages

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i thought it was a takeoff of the Kingdom too (the hospital being on a hell portal, i doubt its referencing Buffy there).

pete s, Monday, 2 February 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't get any references -- I am sci-fi-phobic, but liked it anyway. I though the main guy (name?) was Office Series 2's saving grace, so was glad to see him do more. Had no idea he'd won the perrier.

stevem -- Darkplace is Thursday C4, DVD Commentary is Wednesday on, weirdly, ITV.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew Holness plays Garth Marenghi/Rick Dangless MD.

pete s, Monday, 2 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
anyone see 'rob brydon's annually retentive'?

weird.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. I have seen it:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/

I liked epsiode 1 very much, but the "tension" was gone by the time epsioode 2 came round. But for half an hour, it was very good indeed, apparently qite vicious, biting the hand that feeds, I think, not least because I hadn't heard anything about it, so it was easier to "fool" me or not "fool" me, whichever it is.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

it must have been quite expensive to make.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Annually Retentive - I dunno, I liked it in a way but it was also quite bleak (in the typical Brydon way I suppose) and really alarming in the way presumably everyone involved agreed that the criticisms and jibes Brydon brought up were 'realistic' i.e. that's what other people really think. Incredibly close to the bone but in such a flippant, casual way.

What interests me about it is whether it really is the death knell for comedy panel shows. There was another a direct assault like this on the trad. sitcom (things like Acorn Antiques took the piss out of low production values rather than the format itself didn't they?).

It would be odd if the BBC itself launched a genuine comedy panel show after this for example. Even a new series of Buzzcocks would have no credibility now would it (not that it had much left before AR)? How will they get around that problem? Are shows like Q.I. somehow exempt from this? Will this show really make any kind of difference at all in the end?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

Will this show really make any kind of difference at all in the end?

there have been shit chat shows post-partridge.

including that one with, er, rob brydon.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

which was supposed to be ironishit, but kind of wasn't.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

So you're saying no then?

including that one with, er, rob brydon.

So, so bad. Didn't understand why they were bothering to do it post-KMKY.

And remember that poor Dom Joly one?

Bloody copycats, and on the same channel as well. SHouldn't have been allowed.

One thing I did like: the baldish guy from the Orange cinema ads who was among the table of producers/writers in episode 1 (along with Curtis thingy in his 'I'm Islamic' hat saying NOTHING AT ALL, and girl who looked a bit like younger Julia Davis but wasn't) is actually a GUEST on the panel show in the second episode (which I haven't seen yet).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Also worrying is prospect of developing crush-of-shame on Jane Moore.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

And as for Lucy Porter, I wonder if she thought 'by taking part in a show in which my stature as a relatively successful comedienne is questioned by someone I actually know and like IRL (presumably) I will endear myself to the viewers further even though I don't actually have any funny lines in the script or anything'

It is all rather mind-bogling, so on that basis I approve.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

yeah the second ep is as good as the first, mainly because of the orange guy and the reason for him being on the show.

it passes the time between 'bbbm' and 'lost'. i'm uneasy about it, but it's better than the brydon chat show by a long way.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

I've never liked any of Brydon's previous shows incidentally. Not to my taste.

Is Brydon 'Henry Normal'? (this may have been discussed and resolved before)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

Is Brydon 'Henry Normal'? (this may have been discussed and resolved before)

doubt it; this is from his imdb entry though:

Himself - filmography

"Imagine"
- A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Studio (2006) TV Episode .... Himself
"The South Bank Show"
- Steve Coogan (2001) TV Episode .... Himself
Frank Skinner on Frank Skinner (2001) (TV) .... Himself

i liked the original 10min 'marion & geoffs' well enough. 'directors commentary' was a good idea.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

never did see Directors Commentary.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Things that make me uneasy -

The people on it really are Brydon's mates (eg Wallimas).

They advertise it on the radio as if it was a normal programme that they want people to watch, which seems to go against the grain of the content a bit, but then again, it can't.

I found the first episode both shocking and yet also reassuring, in that it encapsulates the way I feel about my rubbish job and all the twatty things I have to do.

Although today I am doing teacher training materials and it is even worse.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also -

This is copying A Cock and Bull Story, so they themselves are doing what they are slagging off.

But it might all be a double bluff.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

i think it would be better if it had a third level, or brydon and his production team putting together the bits with him and his production team in them.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Is the little "orange" fella really in Little Britain?

Did Brydon really "script edit" Little Britain. If so, or even if not so, what does that involve?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Is Brydon 'Henry Normal'?

No.

Did Brydon really "script edit" Little Britain. If so, or even if not so, what does that involve?

I dunno of Brydon did but one of the League of Gentlemen did. I imagine it involves sobbing quietly.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

uh, didn't mean to paste ENTIRE CV there.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

I liked M&G, nothing else of his really interests me.

A comedy show taking the piss out of a bad format (or bad implimentation of the format) has never stopped those shows being made. cf The Day Today, Alan Partridge etc

xpost: A crush on Jane Moore is anything BUT a crush of shame. And Lucy Porter oozes hottness.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

It was interesting, Roughage. He has done quite a lot. Discworld seems to me to be about his level, really. I would say that to him if I were him on this Annually Retentive thing.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

The girl who looks like Julia Davis was in Dark Place and the Mighty Boosh, I think. 'Human Remains' with Brydon & Julia Davis was by far the best thing I've seen RB in. Although, I am really enjoying AR, it's quite watchable without being LOL funny all through. I liked the Diamond hating. I do feel like I actually believe it's a documentary about RB, even though I know that's the whole trick.

an eighth polish (an eighth polish), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Lucy Potter or Porter or whatever her name is was on some panel game on Radio 4 last night. Come to think of it, the panel game, which I switched off almost immediately due to other commitments, appeared to be about Greg Dyke, with questions on Greg Dyke's life, and it was presented by Greg Dyke, which is perhaps even more subversive than Annually Retentive.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 20 July 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

I imagine Brydon would fire back at you with a zingy "Do you still see Duncan?"

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

If only they had been able to think of a witty name for the Greg Dyke panel show.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

'Fingering The Dyke'

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

I have never, to my knowledge, seen Pj and Duncan, being abroad during their brief reign. So I am just non-plussed when people say that, unsure whether it is an insult or not. I imagine they are like Ant and Dec.

Listen again!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/personality_test/pip/fheks/

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

I've just watched the first couple of these. I feel like I'd quite enjoy the panel game in itself, probably, without the backstage stuff, so it's a little bit annoying that they keep cutting away from it.

Other than that, it's just quite strange, isn't it? It's not funny, and it's not clear what they're trying to do, but it still manages to be interesting.

I really really fancy Lucy Porter and I liked her long before any of you did so HANDS OFF, alright?

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

The fly on the wall bits are way funnier than the show bits, though the latter do acurately capture the soul-numbing mediocrity of the knocked-out comedy panel show.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

i did indeed miss "the thick of it", and can't find a trrnt anywhere. but it's repeated on wednesday, so hey :)

the xmas charlie brooker thing was fucking godlike. i laughed so hard i was almost sick.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 8 January 2007 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

found out last night that five us is showing 'whose line is it anyway?'. no idea what year this was from (was the american version) but had several lolling moments nonetheless. all the americans from the english series still seem to be doing it as well - colin mochrie, ryan stiles, greg proops (oh, is still going according to imdb). seems very short though, what with american ad breaks and all.

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

The American version of Whose Line is so much better than the British version, mainly because it's not got a bunch of clapped out Comic Strip fucks clogging the place up. Plus Stiles = ratings.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

Thick of It is a bit overrated I think. The episode was fine but not actually LOL funny. I couldn't tell the difference between the Tories and Labour (oh, wait, I GET IT HAHA), no, but I actually couldn't and it think it needs to be more pointedly satirical and to hit it's targets rather than just spin-doctors-run-around-like-headless-chickens, crazy or what?

xposts: Lead Balloon is a great sitcom. I lolled.

DavidM* (unreal), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Lead Balloon is a great sitcom - yes it's called Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I'm here all week folks. LB is watchable enough though yr rite.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't tell the difference between the Tories and Labour (oh, wait, I GET IT HAHA), no, but I actually couldn't

well i could, because there were two narratives (the tories want to seem green and immigrant-friendly; labour don't want to upset the big man's 'legacy' arrangements or let in the nutters). there was a bit too much invective and swearing for my gentle ears but it was still the best hour of uk tv i've seen all year (i think).

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

i watched it on replay and when it finished the news was on about brown bouncing blair into making a statement about the saddam hanging. it's not the funniest show, but it does the job of making you imagine all the frantic paddling.

two weeks pass...
Ruddy hell Enfield and Whitehouse are back together.

The trailer features BLACKING UP.

It's like Gervais never happened etc.

blueski, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't there new Peep Show on Friday, or did I imagine it?

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

urgh, proof that success of Little Britain has been a bloody disaster.

blueski, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

That Mandela sketch is pretty much stolen directly from Chappelle's Show, right?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Rush Hour is pretty much sinking without trace, isn't it? And deservedly so. Smart of Adam Buxton to get his little gem of a contribution onto Youtube before broadcast - it's probably had more views on there than the BBC3 audience figures for the show from whence it came.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Holy shit Have I Got News For You is bad these days.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, like, Get A Grip bad.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

Who's this douchetard that looks like a Fast Asleep Club era Mike Myers? He just basically did a "all black teenagers are criminals" gag.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

Whitehouse/Enfield reunion: sucky as well. I mean, I lolled at the Jose impression, but...

Dom Passantino, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

Hoo boy, this is getting progressively less prettier.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

That dickrag who wrote Star Stories is lead writer on this, you know? You'd never tell...

Dom Passantino, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

wow, that jobs/gates thing was pretty much the absolute worst sketch in the history of the world.

That one guy that quit, Friday, 13 April 2007 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

lol accents

Dom Passantino, Friday, 13 April 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

it was almost half bearable when they weren't impersonating famous people. but yes, lol accents. gah.

peep show. dark.

stevie, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

You're the only person watching this show, Dom. The (lack of any) joke's/jokes (are) on you, buddy-pal mateyboy.

Peep Show very, very good tonight. But there's a thread for that, isn't there?

Damn! xp

Michael Jones, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

it was very bad. i saw it with my parents, they thought it was bad.

That one guy that quit, Saturday, 14 April 2007 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

OK, so this is the first time I've come across Get A Grip. This can't actually be real, can it? Lock ITV now please.

Haha, OMG, that's meant to be a *positive* review? Lolz at the insecure women that don't exist outside of comedy sketches! Guffaw at the men who Just Don't Get It even though women aren't actually like that! Roffle at the hilarious social satire of "oh noes, teh disableds get all the good parking spaces"! Must book my tickets right now!

ailsa, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Dunno bout you but i'd trust anything someone called "Dominic Cavendish" says.

Frogman Henry, Saturday, 21 April 2007 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

that mcintyre guy is seriously funny. see also the bald bloke with the beard who was on qi last night. and everyone who is on qi, while they are on qi.

stevie, Saturday, 21 April 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

except for alan davies who is president for life of the peoples' republic of douchetards

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 21 April 2007 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

Ruddy Hell, It's Cringemakingly Unfunny. Paul Whitehouse seems to have totally lost it since he started believing what a good actor he is.

Tom D., Saturday, 21 April 2007 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

...Big Suze is in it tho! She's on twice in one night!!

Tom D., Saturday, 21 April 2007 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

I think the acting in Ruddy Hell - by Whitehouse and Enfield - is really really good. It's not quite LOL funny... yet. These kind of sketch shows are all about repitition I suppose.

I like the antiques dealer so far - "I can tell you're an interior designer" "No, but I want to be!" - and the silliness of the U2 skit is growing on me. But I don't 'get' the South African (I thought he was supposed to be Dutch at first) guy at all.

DavidM, Saturday, 21 April 2007 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

"But who should I go with? Everyone I knew either didn't want to go or already had a ticket. In fact, the only person who'd expressed any interest at all was Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace, the "ghetto princess" from last year's Big Brother, who has, inexplicably, become a friend of mine in recent months. So I invited her."

The entire series of "Gavin and Stacey" is being shown on BBC 3 tonight. I only started watching at episode 3, so I am looking forward to seeing what I missed.

(I imagine that is the kind of post you get on "normal" internet forums.)

PJ Miller, Saturday, 30 June 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I have got "Ideal" on DVD for 4.99 GBP. I hope it is good.

PJ Miller, Saturday, 30 June 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

it is not. i tried watching the episode with MES as Jesus in it and had to fast forward to his bit.

i see Hyperspace got a second series.

also, reading the guardian / observer over the weekend there was a picture from a fashion parade where the bloke was wearing a tuxedo and a tiny top hat = nathan barley comes to life.

three months pass...

i laughed possibly more than i should've at russell brand last night. specifically when he pointed out that national public information films for people without covers on their grain silos was a bit narrowly focused.

armando iannucci dvd arrived yesterday. watched first episode lunchtime. lots of good stuff. house made of paper. in my day the internet was in black and white. footballing. the pie full of jokes...

koogs, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

not new, but newly repeated on bbc4. Love Soup. quite gentle but reminds me of Moffat at times. and hour long episodes. always wondered if there'd ever be a series 2.

(um, last three posts are all mine. the words 'horse', 'dead' and 'flogging' spring to mind)

"Great Night Out"

The critics seem to have slated it, but every 'comments' after the review have gone the way of "whaddya mean? It's Great!"

Mark G, Monday, 11 February 2013 09:40 (thirteen years ago)

Much like Mrs Brown's Boys then (in terms of inexplicable popularity despite universal derision)?
