Didn't they already try this a few times before?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 January 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"A handful of states already omit the word 'evolution' from their teaching guidelines, and Ms. Cox called it 'a buzz word that causes a lot of negative reaction'. She added that people often associate it with 'that monkeys-to-man sort of thing'."

Can't really blame them for hating Evolution, though

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 January 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

" "Evolution" was replaced with "changes over time," and in another phrase that referred to the "long history of the Earth," the authors removed the word "long." Many proponents of creationism say Earth is at most several thousand years old, based on a literal reading of the Bible."

sym (shmuel), Saturday, 31 January 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

My theory is that people in Georgia really wanted to create a time machine but couldn't figure out how to, so they did the next best thing.

"Everyone, pretend like it's 50 years ago, GO!"

The best part of this article was its placement in the paper itself. Two articles appeared in the two right-hand columns of the first page of the National section. One began above the fold and ran halfway below it. The other took up the remaining below-the-fold space, such that reading the first article lead your eye naturally to the second article. The first article was the one linked above. The title of the second article was "California Measure Would Align Building Rules With Feng Shui."

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 31 January 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't the Deep South been resisting evolution for at least 300 years?

They don't believe in alcohol, so they don't drink.
They don't believe in dancing, so they don't dance.
They don't believe in evolution, so they haven't evolved since 1700.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 31 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's already dug up a lot of controversy, I mean, even Republicans think that replacing the word is a fucking stupid idea.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 31 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, I don't think it's fair to say "Georgia" is taking on evolution because it's really only Kathy Cox who thinks this is a good idea.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 31 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually always like it when somebody like Cox thinks it's a good idea and figures there'll be no complaints and then gets shot down all around. Good humility lesson, that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

what a goddamned shame. (i wrote about it yesterday in proven by science, if people want to comment there!)

still, this is disturbing news.

This story sums up an aspect of why the USA is viewed with great bemusement by those in Europe and other 'First World' areas...

The USA is clearly Two Nations; even more so than Britain at the moment. The North East Coast, Mid-Atlantic and some Industrial Midwest States, plus the West Coast, are one (not forgetting probably Iowa and Minnesota). And then we have the South, the West, areas of the midwest, which make up a greater % of sq. km, and are right in the centre of the country. This is effectively Bush America - with some lunatic fundamentalism - while the other, *more secular* (if not entirely so) part is Democrat America, for want of a better word.

Jimmy Carter is sublimely right... though why on earth aren't more people being so vehement in their scorn of these attempts in Georgia?

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 1 February 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, clearly the Georgians on this thread have expressed undying support for this proposal

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 1 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously Tom that "it's like this in this region, but it's like this in another" is total crap

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 1 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you mean, Thomas? We know that cultures are not homogeneous. They differ geographically, creating subcultures by region (amongst other things) don't they?

run it off (run it off), Sunday, 1 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I am speaking in general, not definitive terms, and it's quite clear I'm right that it is broadly a Two Nation country. I mean, would you see such a story coming up in New York, Connecticut, Oregon or Michigan, say? It's clear there is much more religiosity in the South, and some West/southern Midwest states.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 1 February 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's more a matter of urban vs. rural; most of the people I've met here are pretty liberal.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 1 February 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

In Michigan?

head over to Slashdot, and read about some of the shit that the guys there have to put up with in their local town(Holland, MI).

also, Michigan is a fucked up state. mostly suburbs or farmland. the west side of the state (around Grand Rapids) has no shortage of religious conservatives, and it's rumored that the KKK moved their capital/headquarters up to Howell, a town between Flint & Ann Arbor.

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i think tom may does a good job of demonstrating why americans can never take europeans seriously when they start banging on about 'america'.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, I'd wager every u.s. state is roughly 50/50 Repub/Demo, more or less. Sadly that "more or less" part is important, because with the electorate system, a slight nudge in either direction can mean a lot come election day.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd actually say there are clearly more Democratic supporters than Republican supporters, but there are clearly more Republican voters than Democratic ones... HINT HINT MUTHAFUCKIN HINT

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

one reason why this case is incredibly important (if american democracy is REVOLUTIONIZED - plz plz santa - i'm gonna mail a copy of aesop's "the goose that laid the golden egg" to tom delay's office).

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

congressionaldistrict botmdaries?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

DB: Looking at the figures, Massachuessetts, New York, DC and Rhode Island are clearly at least 60-40 Dem. Whereas Wyoming, Nebraska, Utah, Idaho... are all even more than 60-40 Rep. If Kerry (or indeed Dean) wins the nomination, you could see plenty of Southern states going for GWB by landslides. Clearly, at least some states are slanted one way or the other. I agree there are swing states, however, from Florida to Iowa to West Virginia to New Mexico etc. etc.

Cinniblout: Do you dispute the deep divisions that exist in the United States? I have more to learn in detail on certain areas, and will do so, but I think I get an understandable impression that there is a growing Two Nations situation developing.

It all reminds me of the extent to which Britain became in the 1980s (and frankly still is) a Two Nation state, with the West Midlands, North West, North East, Wales, Scotland and Yorkshire a different world to the South (East especially) and possibly the East Midlands. It was a clear division, in terms of power, wealth per capita and type of economy.

There is a great divergence in the US; there is not such an obvious divide in wealth. You would expect the Republicans to be strongest in the richest areas (being the more pro-rich party), but this isn't the case: California, New York and Connecticut were all comfortably held by Gore in the 2000 Election (I presume 3 of the richest, from what I know). Does anyone know which are the actual 5 richest states per capita, out of interest?

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

When Did Dinosaurs Live?

What's this? Dinosaurs and people together? Some scientists think that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago, long before humans lived on the earth. But the Bible tells us the real story. The Bible tells us that God made the dinosaurs on day six of Creation week, only thousands of years ago. Do you know who God also made on day six to take care of the world? Adam and Eve, the first two humans, our great, great, great, great...grandparents. Do you know what this means? Dinosaurs must have lived at the same time as Adam and Eve. Wow! Wouldn't that have been exciting!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously creationists need to come up with some sort of text book that doesn't even mention evolution/natural selection.

As an idea it seems to me to exist almost entirely as counterpoint.

Jarlrmai, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

If you believe that the Earth is only a few thousand years old, you not only have to think evolution is incorrect, but also pretty much the rest of biology, geology, chemistry and physics.
