Currently Kickstart is running in the background. I'm gonna jump over those 2-dimensional logs like in the old days. Then off to Acapolco with World Games for a spot of jumping off cliffs, then onto International Karate, where I can deflect bouncing balls with a shield and my speed, daniel son, wax on wax off.

You need to get One on One: Dr J vs. Bird next.

^ best retro game ever!!!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

As a kid, my favorite game on C64 was Ultimate Wizard. You should try and find that.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The CD's for Ultimate Wizard on it. Its got like 10,000 games on this here CD - that'll keep me going for a while.

Johnney B, Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa 10,000!
I'll list some of the ones I remember fondly then:
Trolls and Tribulations
Swinth
Forbbiden Forest
Spy Hunter
Super Pipeline 2
Lode Runner
Wizard

Also maybe you could help me out, Do you know the name of the game where you start swinging on vines, then swimming with crocodiles, then jumping over rocks running up hill. (something like Jungle Adventure?)
and another game where it's a black background and you are this blue pixel warriorlike guy that goes around a blue maze dodging pixel creatures (something like Shadow Man or Shadow Runner?)

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

PITFALL

Jon Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Pitfall! There was some other Kung Fu game with a satori in the main screen I also remember playing all the time.

LOAD"PITFALL",8,1

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Super Pipeline! I forgot about that! That was the one with the guy running around on pipes and blocking leaks and filling up barrels wasn't it? That game rocked!

(checks CD)

Yay, its on there! Come to papa!

Neither of those games ring a bell, I'm afraid. The second one I seem to have a dim recollectionof , but its so dim I wouldn't be able to say what it was called or anything.

The most impressive thing about this emulator is that I remembered how to load stuff! Without any prompting whatsoever, I know that I had to type LOAD "*",8,1 to get it working! Solid!

Johnney B, Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of interest, can anyone remember what the ,8,1 was all about? I used to know, but that bit of my brain has been used for something else now.

Johnney B, Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably the number of bits and parity of the tape or something? Like the modem settings of yore.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Gazza's Supper Soccer and Speedball 2 were the main reasons why I never really did much homework.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You know what, I've still got me old C64 in my parent's basement somewhere and I bet it still works. One of theses days I'll get that up and running again. But I remember it took so long to load games. That really help develop my patience at a young age. That's why all the kids now-a-days need Ritalin: No long wait for games to load.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst thing: waiting 45 minutes for a game to load, and then nothing happens. Ah the joys of those £1.99 games from the newsagents.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG!! I have to get this and start in on Impossible Mission STAT!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

This one's a difficult jump.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i missed the C64, leaping from a Commodore 16/+4 straight to an Amiga

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You never lived, stevem.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If I do start posting on this thread, then I'll never leave. So I won't.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. Does anybody remember the commercial they ran for it back in the day -- "my friends are breaking down my door to play my Commodore 64?"

Prude (Prude), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And it was true!!

(My favourite was "Raid over Moscow" - in which you had to destroy a nuclear reactor by throwing frisbees at it)

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 31 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom's top 10 Commodore 64 games:

10. Tracksuit Manager
9. AlterEgo
8. Alleykat
7. Rockstar Ate My Hamster
6. The Blues Brothers
5. Outrun Europa
4. MultiPlayer Soccer Manager
3. International Karate +
2. Midnight Resistance
1. Microprose International Soccer

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Joy at the knowlegde that you could once get away with a game called "Tracksuit Manager".

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Saturday, 31 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll tell you what, this emulator is pretty good at stopping you from doing things you shouldn't be doing. I normally get through a bottle and a half on vino on a sat. night in - thanks to Super Pipeline 2, I was stuck in front of my monitor till 2 in the morning. Wait till I get to Quasimodo! This is gonna be worse for my career than CM4.

Johnney B, Sunday, 1 February 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone please tell me how I emulate C64 on Mac OS X? I want to play Adrian Mole and Impossible Mission whilst eating lots of pot noodles.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 1 February 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of interest, can anyone remember what the ,8,1 was all about? I used to know, but that bit of my brain has been used for something else now.

The 8 was the number of the drive, and the 1 was, I think, a flag that tells the program where to go in memory. Wizball is still the best video game ever.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 1 February 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

os x emulator here

nobody, Sunday, 1 February 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Paradroid! Turbo Outrun! Last Ninja 2! Oh man, I wish I still had mine, but it was cruelly thrown out without me knowing. :(

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Sunday, 1 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

there's an adrian mole game?!

!!!!
????

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a Yes, Minister game as well. And a Young Ones one. And Allo Allo.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"There was some other Kung Fu game with a satori in the main screen I also remember playing all the time."

yeah, what was I thinking. That was International Karate:

check this out a Frankie Goes to Hollywood game:

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

FGTH was voted by Commodore Force as the best C64 game ever back in 1993. I seem to remember it being overrated. And the best C64 game ever was, as stated, Microprose International Soccer, which may be second only to SWOS in the most fun sports game to play ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

All the games I liked/played a lot were much older. My family moved on to a mac fairly early and we stopped using the commadore. I'm checking out some of the one's you like Dom. I just got AlterEgo.

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I found what I hought was Pitfall. It's called Jungle hunt:

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom, have you ever finished Rock Star Ate My Hamster? What is the SECRET of success?!? i always failed abysmaly. i even tried playing it again recently on an emulator, and still didn't get further than one gold record (or was it platinum) and one or two odd singles in the top five.

Mind Taker, Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

man, my hazy memory is coming back: exploding fist is the kung fu game I was thinking of, not International karate.

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone here play BARD'S TALE?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I had Internatinal Karate too. Played it to breaking point.
Also had: Rick Dangerous, Italia 90, Supremacy, Lords of Chaos,
Creatures, Pipe Dreams, Spy vs Spy, Myth, and those cool games where you played an egg. Dont rememeber the name but they were by codemasters.

pete s, Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ignore the spam. sigh.

pete s, Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you're thinking of Yie Ar Kung Fu?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, the Bard's Tale... I hated those damn wander around for hours doing nothing games.

The secret to Rockstar Ate My Hamster? Not a clue. But damn entertaining while you were waiting, wasn't it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: Dizzy the Egg: classic or dud?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone know where to get quality emulators of the C64, NES, and old arcade-cart games for OSX? Or what they're called? Thx

Major Grubert (Grandin), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzy: absolute classic

pete s, Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzy: classic, except for Down The Rapids and the one with shapes.

TS: Dizzy the egg vs Dizzee Rascal. Would the latter enjoy being cast in a 16-colour puzzle adventure game?

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I once appeared as a friend of a challenger of the Scorelord in Zzap!64. Ph34r me.

"Beyond The Forbidden Forest"

Oh, that's the sequel to Forbidden Forest?
I've never played that.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 9 February 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"California Games", "Winter Games", and "Summer Games". Also, respect to "Ghostbusters", "Spy vs. Spy" and one of my all-time faves "LAW OF THE WEST".

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 9 February 2004 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Law of the West! That's the one where you encounter all sorts of crazy characters, and end up shooting them out of boredom, right? And you do a Steptoe walk when you come on to screen.
