Shifted just after I asked for him to be shifted. Still on for the Vale then, chaps?

ailsa, Saturday, 11 February 2012 00:14 (twelve years ago) link

What time is anyone turning up?

brain (krakow), Saturday, 11 February 2012 08:36 (twelve years ago) link

I'm heading there for about 12.

Aunt Acid and the Gaviscons (aldo), Saturday, 11 February 2012 08:49 (twelve years ago) link

Cool, I think Ailsa mentioned the same. That should suit me, but you know where I am, if I don't appear!

I'll pick out a different Circle t-shirt just now...

brain (krakow), Saturday, 11 February 2012 08:50 (twelve years ago) link

I'll be there around 12 as well.

ailsa, Saturday, 11 February 2012 09:13 (twelve years ago) link

In, sat opposite the door.

Aunt Acid and the Gaviscons (aldo), Saturday, 11 February 2012 12:06 (twelve years ago) link

Good times. Cheap beer, having to obtain a key to another level to go to the ladies, being the only woman in a packed pub. Actually genuinely quite liked it! Good to catch up with aldo and krakow.

Vague plans were made for an assault on music quizzes. Anyone else up for this?

ailsa, Saturday, 11 February 2012 18:05 (twelve years ago) link

I really liked the Vale too! It was good to meet you for the first time aldo and to catch you again a bit more properly ailsa. I hope that you had a good rest of the afternoon. It made a really nice change for a Saturday lunchtime for me. Up for an assault on various music quizzes...

brain (krakow), Saturday, 11 February 2012 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

Forgot to show you my Circle t-shirt aldo, I was wearing the red fist...

Glasgow, I've missed you. just arrived for a three day conferencel at SECC and staying across the road at the Campanile. currently sitting in the hotel bar and wondering whether a restaurant next door which boasts Japanese, Thai and Chinese cuisine via a large neon sign could possibly be any good

Grandpont Genie, Sunday, 25 March 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

It is, actually!

Have any Glaswegians seen Tavernier's Death Watch. Don't think I've ever seen a city photographed on film so lovingly well as this.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link

The first shot of the cemetery is one for all time.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link

saw it at the glasgow film theater last week :-) am always keen to catch old film of my adopted hometown, and yes, loved the dusky, twilight quality to many of the images. it was interesting to see that parts of the city centre have hardly changed in thirty years - i immediately recognised st vincents street, where i work. that cemetery is the necropolis, which is a pretty photogenic place (and about ten minutes away from my flat); it also turns up in The Angels' Share funnily enough, along with other parts of the East End (Mark S wrote a v gd review of the Loach for S&S, btw)

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:45 (eleven years ago) link

Interested in The Angels' Share - a Ken Loach comedy, don't think I've seen one..

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

I loved it.

Madchen, Thursday, 14 June 2012 05:57 (eleven years ago) link

hi madchen!

the angels's share is v v funny in places, but one of the gd things abt it is the way that loach complicates the characters - there's a really moving and brilliantly acted scene where the lead guy is confronted with the effect of his violent behaviour. i can understand why they're billing it as 'the scottish full monty' on the posters, but of course it's not really v helpful or accurate to think of it in that way

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 14 June 2012 08:02 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, that scene was superb.

Glasgow! I will be in you next weekend, on my apparently triennial schedule. would anyone FANCY A PINT (or possibly dram)? Sunday afternoon, or even Monday evening, would be especially suitable.

also, anything I shouldn't miss while in town?

ͼѾͽ (sic), Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:52 (ten years ago) link

Hi sic. Do you mean the weekend of the 9th? Could def meet you for a pint.

I could quite possibly be tempted up the road for this. Pre-emptive NOT MONO post :-)

ailsa, Thursday, 31 October 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link

I should be free too & fancy a little hello.

Events-wise there are a lot of gigs happening on the Saturday night if your tastes stray anywhere into experimental, psych and other relatively under-the-radar type musical territories.
There is at least one band on each of these bills that I personally heartily recommend:

am going to the glad cafe tomorrow to see bill orcutt - the bar/cafe area at the G.C. is much much nicer than the concert area, imho

love the park just across the way from the glad cafe - once bunked off work on a sunny day and went and sat by the duck pond there reading henry james, it was heaven on the southside, really

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 31 October 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

jed, i wish you all the luck in the world w/ yr gay disco but i am solely of the seated persuasion these days

Madchen, Thursday, 31 October 2013 21:24 (ten years ago) link

The bar staff at the Glad Cafe are the friendliest people on earth. Also, I love pubs that sell cakes.

^best night in glasgow imo; great venue too

aw thanks.

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 31 October 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

Never been to that venue, is it newish? Would go to that night if I was about.

Miss Glasgow, been away 16 months, though I was back for a ten day visit at xmas, and still no used to being so far away from the place. Lived my whole life within ten miles of celtic park until I moved :/

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 31 October 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link

so, Sunday? say 3 or 4pm? jed or Ward want to nominate a place that's cosy with enough tables we can settle around one?

[or is The Glad Cafe pub-with-cakes a suggestion? all those links are facebook so it's hard for me to tell. (I don't facebook.)]

someone see if Grimly fancies coming out?

ta for all the recommendations though, I'll see what/if the folks I'm staying with might be tempted out for!

ͼѾͽ (sic), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

catching the sleeper up tonight and back tomorrow too. train doesn't leave until 11:50 iirc, so there's a sort of plan that involves having a bite to eat/drink with a colleague/friend, then *finding something to do* tomorrow evening assuming I don't just stay in the pub. film seems boring but might catch any old theatrical/music shit if anyone's got any ideas.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 17:08 (ten years ago) link

sic - glad cafe is nice, but not that central, which may be a factor for ppl on a sunday. i'm going to defer to jed or another glasgow person, i only know a few favoured haunts (inc. the outlawed Mono) that i'm not quite sure fit the bill, here.

fizzles - i am drawing a blank for tomorrow, beyond the obv (ie glasgow film theatre.) as an ilber, you should def visit this place when you have more free time in the city
