Pinstriped Jeans

Are they back?

On the tube yesterday a very cute girl got off at Bank wearing... pinstriped jeans. And I thought -- "Wow! Those suddenly look really good!"

Which is odd, since they were the most ubiquitous denim trouser of 1980, (preparing the way for the burgundy sta-prest debacle of the following year) and within 6 months the most "pikey" unfashionable item you could possibly wear.

Today I notice my hipster colleague Celia wearing a pair.

This is thread where you can add your surprising fashion development observations.

turn-up's on jeans

Mmmm, dubious. Pin stripe jeans and those coloured/patterned shirts with white collar and cuffs.... No no no!

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

That whole '80s thing is awful imo: lime green stripes, pictures of ladies sipping cocktails etc....it's not far enough back in history yet for a revival. So were these denim jeans? I used to have some striped, overdyed jeans, which I wore with jazz shoes and leg warmers. I looked a right bugger in retrospect.

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 26 February 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago) link

oh jesus, I remember my pair of pinstriped baggies. Looking back, I must have looked a proper nana

chris (chris), Thursday, 26 February 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

I haven't seen many in the shopz0r recently - the ranges in the high street at the moment are the cropped faded denim pant look (ie RUBBIDGE) and still, trackie bottoms with either a stripe down the leg or "GUNT" written across the arse.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 26 February 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago) link

At the Mary Timony show last night, there was a couple where the dude was wearing a suit and tie, and the woman was wearing a huge (hopefully fake) fur coat. Regardless of your feelings about fur, I think we can all agree that anyone under the age of 50 who wears a fur coat should be decapitated and peed on.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

I thoroughly agree. Fur coats are NOT chic. Unless you are a Parisian grandmother with hooker red lipstick and a smelly french cigarette. Now THAT is chic.

do mark c's jeans that i got in the clothes swap count as pinstriped? they're stripey, at least...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago) link

The horror, the horror.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

Genius!

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago) link

Odd. My research suggests that 1983 rather than 1980 was the year of the pinstripe, but I'm sure I wore them when I was at primary school, ie before 1981.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:20 (twenty years ago) link

I wore them in 1984... pink and green stripes. Hurt me.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, after reading that website I now know for sure I'm living in the 80's.

I have pinstriped jeans, they're my favourites. I never had any in the 80's though, but I don't think I wore jeans as a kid, I was more a skirt and wellies girl. I did get a pair of pinstriped jeans in about '98 though and I've been looking for another pair since then.
I love my plastic bracelets, I've wanted some red Peter Pan boots for years, and I still wear my Pop-Swatch. I did make the wise decision of throwing away my Polaroid Glasses (with palm tree images on them) last week.
I daren't read past "P".

celeste (Celeste), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

I remember really really really wanting this pair of Jordache jeans that had lemon yellow pinstripes on them, I thought they were so lovely. But my mom thought they were a waste of money so I just had to make do with my plain old jeans. If they come back into style I am afraid I will have to buy a pair, just to make up for not having them before.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

I wore pleated pinstriped jeans (dark blue with thin pink and aqua lines) with hot-pink and hot-green chunky knit acrylic sweaters when I was in 2nd grade...7 years old maybe?

That link above reminded me also of my Guess jeans with the zippers at the ankles, worn ages 8-9. Bought too long so they bunched at the knees and I could grow into them. Man, I loved those jeans. They weren't pinstriped though.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:13 (twenty years ago) link

And Colette, I wouldn't call those trousers pinstriped. They've got mroe of a herringbone thing going on.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago) link

MORE.

n.b. I was 7 in 1985. Looks like I was already passe even then.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:15 (twenty years ago) link

my Guess jeans with the zippers at the ankles

Oooo, those are sooo 7th grade. That and folding and rolling the bottoms of your jeans. I think my current like for bootcuts and flares is a total backlash against junior high style.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

As is mine. I well remember the pleat-and-fold. That shit had to be TIGHT at the ankles or you couldn't show your face in homeroom ever.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago) link

My not-so-secret wardrobe shame: I wore a sweater something like this when I was in 7th grade... except it was purple and had hearts and unicorns knitted across the top.

Luna those jumpers were a key part of my campaign to look like Nick Heyward over several years of the early eighties. Of course they had to be TUCKED INTO YOUR TROUSERS for full effect.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:23 (twenty years ago) link

Smoove De'Nimes to thread.

hstencil, Friday, 27 February 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago) link

I'm waiting for paisley shirts and drainpipe jeans to come back in.

Wait, maybe that isnt a good idea.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

it's a terrible idea! how will i ever find clothes again if everybody buys them all :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:54 (twenty years ago) link

Nicole, your vendor awaits.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago) link

Black and white polkadots! Now that was the shit. I miss my polkadotted be-ribboned finery.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 27 February 2004 03:10 (twenty years ago) link

I misread this thread title initially as Pinstriped Jesus.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 February 2004 05:15 (twenty years ago) link

I bought a pair of tailored pinstriped jeans at a market in Dublin about 2 years ago. The pinstripes have faded nicely, proving their eighties authenticity and my style credentials.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:30 (twenty years ago) link

I used to love my velvet pinstriped trousers I wore around 1999 or thereabouts. I wore them to my first meeting with an Interweb mentalist so they'd recognise me. I also thought they'd make me look indie and idiosyncratic and cool - I was wrong.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago) link

You wore them with a satin blouse, right?

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, a pink one. With a flower in the lapel, and a copy of A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu under one arm. Sadly, as I wasn't meeting Momus it failed to have the desired effect.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

A description of your footwear is imperative.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 29 February 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago) link

eleven months pass...
I have a (baggy) pair of Diesel ones, but the waist is too big (Diesel runs everything large, I should have known a 29" waist would be more like 32") which for some reason makes the crotch bulge out. I don't know if that's a bad thing or not.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:59 (nineteen years ago) link

When will pants manufacturers learn to make the rises on these things shorter? I know that sounds bad but believe me I put as much in there as most guys; it's just that I don't feel any particularly pressing need to store canned hams in my crotch. It's like they're trying to make my legs look even shorter than they are.

Your search - "Pinstriped Jesus" - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:

- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Try different keywords.
- Try more general keywords.

i had the raddest pinstriped jeans when i was a kid, kind of greyish denim with a tiny silver unicorn embroidered on one pocket. worn together with a lavender sweatshirt and purple-accented white reebok hightops... look out, world.

Wah? Now, I *know* I'm fat. :-( I cant seem to find any baggy Diesel jeans (for women that is). Grrrr. I know they make'em but the shops never seem to stock'em.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:54 (nineteen years ago) link

hmm. i think it's the opposite with diesel for women. i'm one size bigger than in other brands, which is yet another reason i don't like their jeansl.
