gettin' fired

Well, I got the sack today from one of my crap part-time weekend uni jobs, after being informed that I was in fact a complete incompetent, and had single-handedly fucked up their pre-election sampling (I was doing phone-pestering for a large opinion polling agency).

So the question...which job were you worst at, and what's the best insult you've heard from an (ex) boss shortly before gettin' fired?

charles, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

...And this is the second job in a row I've been fired from (before crap polling there was the crap bakery). Trifecta by Christmas? Off to centrelink, methinks.

charles, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

sorry about your job charles. i have never been fired from a job. i was worst at my job at Joe's Vegie Stall in Oamaru. I could never work fast enuff. Mrs. Joe was always screaming at the employees for being too slow and incompetent. if you were especially slow, she would send you off to the glasshouses to pick tomatoes. the glasshouses which they would let their dogs into, who peed upon the tomatoes. and that was only Mrs. Joe. Mr. Joe was a disgusting old man who would constantly tell the female employees how much he'd love to see us working in bikinis. since i left that job, i make a point of telling everyone i know about the dog-piss-tomatoes.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

only an intellectually dead sociopath would be COMPETENT at that kind of phone- pestering job, surely: being judged bad at it is a sign of yr being a good person

but: do good ppl get good jobs?

mark s, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well, I did sort of get fired from temping. I was doing boring data entry...but I noticed a distinct lack of morale amongst the work force, and a particularly unsupportive management structure (they made the workers lug their own computers from temporary offices to their newly built ones, after hours!)...so, a management consultant came in, he hated me, because I was telling people not to take this kind of hassle and to stand up to management. Basically, I let being a recent buisness business graduate go to my head...and wrote down loads of proposals, which were presented to the management (in hindsight - d'oh!)...So, the last Friday I was there, I was shifted to a dank corner...on the following Monday, I was told that my services were no longer required...(the manager got the temping agency to phone me, whilst I was in her office, they wouldn't talk to me at all!)

Now, I hate temping.

james, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

charels man congarts on fucking up their polling, anyi nsider gossip you can spread...i've always left my jobs, though was often threatened as a high school checkout chick for my muttonchops.

Geoff, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Temping is Satanic. For every £5 per hour given to you, the company is paying about £20 per hour to your agency. All you really are there to do is something so basic and shitty nobody with a proper contract can be bothered to do it anyway, so it is left until the problem reaches critical mass and the company is forced to hire a temp.

I would so not take it personally that you were sacked by your agency and not the 'employer'; technically, the agency is your employer and the call was theirs to make. And remember, you gained valuable insight and experience of having to engage with people you possibly wouldn't cross the street to piss on, were they on fire. Which is what I said to the last temp agent I worked for in college.

suzy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Thanks Suzy, it's not like I'm having to venture into this world soon.

(Hopefully actually, Mr Branson's Entertainment Emporium will employ me)

Graham, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

go and ask pelicanneck if they will employ you first, or any of the shops on oldham st, you'll save your soul

Ed, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I just got fired from a small bakery/cafe for no good reason (well, they said the economy was slow). Thing is, I wasn't even the last hire- -nope, that would be the manager's boyfriend...how professional, rite? I got a new job almost immediatly though. Which is wierd considering the supposed 'slowness of economy'.

turner, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Charles, pretend you're someone else and apply for the same job. Wink at yer boss and say "I heard from Charles that he got fired. I am YOUR man, baby, take me ON!". Seriously, sorry to hear you got fired. I have never been fired. Two reasons: I take on jobs that are too easy (it makes me feel better) and secondly I normally walk out before they can fire me. Oh third reason: I know how to pretend I am good at my job.

helen fordsdale, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ed, I feel too ignorant even going into indie record shops.

Nope, bullshitting about which Eric Clapton album to get for someone's dad's brithday is very much my calling.

Graham, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In my last job I was simply told "You don't have the skills we need, you're outta here." (Those were the exact words.) I was then left stranded in a remote cuntry (sic) town with not so much as a "Thank you" for the whole year and half I worked 60-100 hours per week, saving his $20million piece of overrated efficiency-software numerous times. That job almost sent me back to therapy.

I did tell the guy that 'rolled me off' (it's not called sacking anymore I think) that I thought he was a cunt, that he could shove his reference where the minions had been licking and that I hope he gets what is coming to him very soon. (Hence my email address.)

Oh, you might want to have a look at http://www.fuckedcompany.com - it's so good I bought the T-shirt and wore it on my last day in that job.

Geoff, surveying gossip: most of the people who would answer the questions were heavily sedated retirement village occupants; as a sample of our voting population it was ridiculously inadequate. My problem was reading the script out like a drone; I couldn't help (ahem) being creative. Anyone got any ideas about good (part-time) student jobs? All of them seem to suck...

charles, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't like the idea of "student jobs" a job is a job is a job. Depending on what you are studying it is quite likely that your career will actually be in the industry that your so called "student job" is in, not in the field that you are studying. I think you should take your part-time working career just as seriously as your study.

By the way, what are you studying? Which city are you in too?

toraneko, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I got fired from HMV after a customer pointed out that the price of a certain cd was more than it had been advertised as in the store, and I gave them a discount.

Apparently I was not supposed to do this without asking anyone. Oh, and I'd already accidently chucked a 10 quid record voucher in the bin.

I was quite glad actually since they were cunts who paid peanuts, and a week later I got a much better job.

Yeah if my boss writes me an e-mail that says, "Please come see me when you have a chance," I usually announce to my officemate that I'm finally going to get fired and then I never do and I just ... well firstly it's bullshit that I'm always on my boss's radar, but whatever.. at this point I don't even care and although I secretly long to be 'let go' being fired would really be humiliating.

Dear Livejournal,

Argh. It appears I might be fired this afternoon from my terrible restaurant job.

Asides from being incompetent, I was apparently supposed to work yesterday. This will be my second no call/no show in less than a month. Not because I’m disinterested but because I’m too absent minded to check the schedule.

I think they might keep me since they have a difficult time filling my position. If they do fire me I’m screwed as I have about 20 dollars in my bank account. Yikes!

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:57 (sixteen years ago) link

one year passes...

my boss has a habit of sending me emails on friday or so once every three months that basically read "you me and the co-owner need to meet at noon on monday" and then offer no additional info when I ask; so every three months I walk around going "am i fired?" and they generally suggest I start work on something that totally confounds me, I tackle it and then repeat.
But every time I spend three days walking around going "am i fired?" and i always feel like it's gonna be this time. And this is this time.

a few days before my 50th birthday i (and many others- this was not personal) was laid off from the company i had worked 14 years for.

i saw it coming (a year ago the UK based company was take over by some american investment fund - and we all know how thats going to fly !),
but still, having worked with the same crew for most of that time its a strange one when it actually happens.
i am now in a strange position where after 30 or so years doing software support/testing, i may never work again for a software company.
at 50, i am not sure i want to start all over again, learning a whole new software application and chancing my luck.
before this job i had worked for many other places, and hated virtually every single moment of my previous jobs due to the absolute shits i had to pretend to like.
instead i may just get a min wage at the pub to help pay the bills and live the small quiet life that i have always been heading towards.
but before i make that decision, i am going to kick back and enjoy the downtime.
i would suggest you do the same if at all possible Morbs.
3 weeks into my new life, and the house looks good, i have plans re the garden once spring arrives, and i really dont miss the sodding 2 hours a day commuting.

good luck whatever you decide to do Morbs ..
