Pornography as related to feminism

Inspired by a pretty dreadful thread over at ILM, I'd like to see this seriously discussed. Does porn degrade the women involved, and in a bigger-picture sense, cause men to view women as meat? Or, are these women entrepeneurs, owning their sexuality and making damn good money for it?

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 11 April 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a good thread on this somewhere in the archives I think.

pity there was never a "the guy next to me is posting to ilx about how I'm looking at porn" thread, eh?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 11 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought it was always women who view men as meat, like, aren't women more like the pitta bread or something?

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks to you, I'll never eat tahini again.

You can fix that problem with yoghurt, I hear.

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll post this on the other thread, too, but for a serious look at feminism and porn, the tome is Angela Carter's The Sadeian Woman & the Ideology of Pornography. It's an astute and awakening read. (It was for me, anyway.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i have mixed views about the subject. in theory, i'd like to see more porn that caters to my tastes, but in reality i don't really have time or money to seek it out anyway.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 12 April 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

agree w/done-to-death comment. Seems like the only time this subject comes up is when a) folks are trying to get laid and b) they got shot down by someone who likes sex, just not with them. Don't mind me, though, I'm just thinking out loud

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 12 April 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I just brought it up because it was kind of brought up in the other thread. Although, as humans I think we're all just trying to get laid, baby!

Yeah sorry

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 12 April 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I REALLY WANT to post here but I am afraid it would jeopardise my claim to be popular and detached and able to appreciate the 5 millionth layer of irony and be more ironic than everyone else. I want to be ten times more ironic than the most ironic person who ever won a BAFTA comedy award. I want to be so ironic that people are afraid to even move their eyes in my presence.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 12 April 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to post but just cos of something one of my friends (a lesbian) told me about porn:

Most feminists don't aprove of porn, but lesbian feminists usually do, cos they like looking at pictures of naked women.

mei (mei), Monday, 12 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"most feminists don't approve of porn" where DO people get these weird ideas from??

liz mathews' DIY porn zine "dirty pictures for dirty girls" rules, btw.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want to be turned pro-porn in a split second search the rantings of such certified nut jobs as Gloria Steinem, Catharine MacKinnon, Andrea Dworkin and Susan Brownmiller. It's not just that such feminists equate all straight sex as rape (apparently women never agree to sex with a man, even if they think they do) but honestly believe porn is leading to moral curruption, every woman who does it is forced to do so, porn directors often kill the stars etc - it's very humourous to read. Dworkin, ironically, believes in something called "pansexuality" which encourages bestiality, children and incest. No I'm no kidding. And she has the gall to call all men bastards and to whine about "Maxim" magazine.

Seriously, Google that lot and tell me you wouldn't buy an issue of "Penthouse" in a newssagent if you saw them in it just to piss them off.

My own stance is each to their own. If it aint breaking the law then just whatever turns you on. Though my own preference is that hardcore porn is usually duller than watching dishes drip dry.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well besides everything else she does, Maxim is a terrible, terrible magazine.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeanne, di, and Spencer are all OTM.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

crw otm. its a shame that so many people seem to think feminists are anti-porn just cos of the high profiles of women like andrea dworkin and catherine mackinnon. there was/still is a CONVOYLOAD of feminists who have much more sophisticated, nuanced views on the subject.

Thank you, 'CRW' for educating us all on a group of really old feminists. And I don't think Gloria Steinem is a 'nutjob', but I suppose if you get all of your information about feminism from Google, you might.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Gloria Steinem not a nutjob... oh go on then, my laughter has stopped now so defend her at will.

CRW (CRW), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to stand up for Maxim. Sure it's a cheap and stupid
laddie mag ("Gear" is far more respectable), but they have
mastered the art of captioning photos. Those captions are
guffaw-worthy. Most of their other attempts at humor don't
pan out though, except when they interview the right
weird celebrities.
