I’m listening to the Bee Gees right now so this is the Disco thread in which we talk about—that’s right—disco.

I want those shoes that have goldfish in them.

If you are really interested in disco history try Love Saves The Day by Tim Lawrence (Duke University Press), which covers '70-'79 and introduces us to people like Larry Levan, Francois K and Frankie Knuckles when they were teens hanging out at the Continental Baths. Also very good about the tension between aspirational white fags and mixed-race, more 'street' counterparts, the birth of Voguing, the production of records I know JBR would drool over!

Dan, I'm not worthy.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what do we do with all this baggage we are carrying around? what do I do with all the fear and all that anger and that repressed stuff, what do I do with all those attitudes and dogmas and theories that are just holding me down and holding me back and turning me into somebody I'm not, what do I do with them, and for me, I had to dance, I had to relieve myself of the whole of western culture and to find that emptiness where I could begin again and to see if there is such a thing as truth I wanted it now I wanted to experiance it, I wanted in this body in this lifetime not some other day some other time, I wanted it now. It's like dancing is sacred.

Dan, that video is like a high budget version of most Wax Trax! videos. Fucking brilliant!

It's all about the "I <3 ZYX" sticker on his synthesizer.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My favourite disco number, which seems astonishingly little known, is 'Penguin At The Big Apple/Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart', from the Trammps' great first album.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I had an argument with someone over what synth that was. I stumbled upon some weird Teisco Synth with that odd layout and thought I was cool, when my friend said, dude, it's a Roland JX-3P.

fern had some tunes for sure

Need to do a deep dive into the rest of the Malaco label at some stage - I know very little of it, but the team that produced those great fern kinney tracks did a whole bunch of other stuff together iirc

the creator has a mazda van (NickB), Monday, 4 November 2019 16:54 (six years ago)

I absolutely love it and I love this sound. This kind of post-disco r'n'b is a very close cousin of lover's rock, and I'm hearing a lot of parallels with Susan Cadogan or Sandra Cross. If you've got any other info about Malaco and other things of that style, let me know.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 4 November 2019 16:58 (six years ago)

yeah i can see that! her two other amazing tunes ('baby let me kiss you' and 'groove me') definitely tap into reggae, but they're also a bit cosmic and twinkly
