So I went to an Indian Casino...

... on Easter Morning. I've never been before. It was really just a flashy tent with a new motel built nearby. It was boring and uncomfortable and they don't bring you free drinks. I only stayed about 15 minutes. I lost four dollars.

The cool thing was that instead of new SUV's, you could win tractors and backhoes.

Nearby was the run-down, grubby tarpaper shacks and trailers of the actual Indian reservation.

Have you been to one?

you didn't have a spiritual vision punctuated by advertisments?

They're all over Washington State... in fact, they're better than some of the "lesser" casinos in Vegas, dare I state.

The Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma rocks it.

Best web site evah: http://www.emeraldqueen.com, especially the "Visit The New I-5 Location" woman.

Were the cocktail waitresses dressed like squaws? I'm not saying that to be a wise-ass. I went to one a couple of years ago, and that was the case.....which sincerely depressed the hell out of me.

I would sadly believe that, Alex... but so far, definitely not the case in Washington, from what I've seen. The laws for opening casinos in Washington state are quite lenient if you can prove Native American descent... in which case, you can open up a casino anywhere you want, pretty much... except for maybe some zoning limit with the downtown of any major city, I'm guessing. They all seem like regular casinos here, pretty much.

Of course, the best named Native American casino EASILY....

Ho-Chunk.

(Thank you, Wisconsin Dells)

I went to the Konocti Vista Casino at Big Valley Rancheria. I'm not sure what tribe it is... probably Pomo, I assume.

It seemed like mostly Indians work there. They have tour buses that bring up alot of elderly Chinese people from SF & Oakland Chinatown.

I thought the place looked like it would blow away in a strong wind. It looked very... temporary. Most of the tribes started off with high-stakes bingo, I think.

Shit, I think I spent quite a few hours there! Is it near the SeaTac airport? We stayed for three days in a motel near there and went to drink draft beer there.

I didn't think it was an Indian casino.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are 45-60 minutes away from my house. And yes I've been to both numerous times and yes im addicted to blackjack, poker and craps.

The Tulsa Creek Nation Bingo Parlor: All the free hot coffee you can drink!

I won a dollar on a slot machine, and a reciept came out of the bottom. I looked at the long line for reciept redemption, and it was at that moment that the kitsch novelty of it all wore off.

I've been to Cache Creek in Sacto valley nowheresville. It's a completely alcohol-free casino. I don't know if this rule has anything to do with alcohol abuse on the reservation, but it does mean you only have to be 18 to go there. It was bullshit though, all blackjack bets required an 25 cent ante! What the hell for?!?

Speaking of which, I was at some lo-budget Vegas casino where you could play war. Standard war rules applied. Meaning, as far as I could tell, there was no house advantage whatsoever. I wish I could remember where this was.

We have a fucked up situation here in Minnesota. By far the most profitable Native casino in the state (because of its proximity to the Twin Cities) is run by a tribe that has something like 200 members. So they're all millionaires. The conservatives in the state, offended that minorities are actually making money and led by our new Republican governor, are seeing this and demanding that the state's natives "share more profits with the state" (ie: they want to continue to break treaties and fuck indians out of what they have) or else the state will open its own casinos.

The really fucked up thing about all this is that all the other reservations in the state (like the one I lived on for much of my life (although I'm not an indian)) have casinos that are tiny and unprofitable in comparison, and also have much larger populations. These reservations are below dirt poor and it's insane and offensive to expect them to give away money to the state.
