URGENT! Where ought the Adulterys move?

As many of you know, Lady, Dog and I were planning on high tailin' it to California (Spencer and Orbit, among others, were very helpful!) but we've come to the realization that poor people from New York City don't move to L.A to escape the things they don't like about New York. The weather is nice but I convinced Wifey we'd never be able to afford to live comfortably there. At leats not now. I love California and hope to make it there someday but not now.

Cali was her first choice. Eliminating it meant that my first choice, Michigan, was also crossed off our list. Gotta be fair. I love Michigan probably more than Sufjan, and have lots of friends there, but Wifey hates the cold (which crosses out my second choice state, Ohio)

So we're trying to compromise. See, on the one hand, this is a wonderful opportunity - almost hippie in its potential for adventure - because we can literally pick a state and move. Anywhere. We have about $1200 between us to get started (security deposit, a month to look for jobs, etc) and NOTHING holding us here. No matter what, we're leaving New York on August 1st and we've told too many coworkers, friends and family about it to punk out now.

We're leaning towards:

Illinois (the vast amount of space with the added bonus of nearby metropolis is great - Jessica won't miss too many creature comforts like record shops and pizza, and I prefer backyards, hammocks and dive bars. Sort of a 'best of both worlds' scenario. We know a few people there too)

Kentucky (She loves Louisville, and the cost of living, I hear, is very low. I also have a job prospect here.)

Georgia (Athens to be exact. Wram weather for her, job prospect for me. Plus more friends here.)

and

Texas (the big mystery state for us. We've both been there, but only briefly, not enough time to get a handle on things. We have NO friends here, have NO idea about the economy / scene / etc, and it's the furthest of the bunch. Still, the uncharted territory excites us both. Plus, I hear San Antonio is cheap to live)

So, I need some help, ILX. If you love your hometown, convince me why! Most important things, in order of importance are:

Cost of living (rent, gas, car insurance)

Available jobs

nearby metropolis (this can be anywhere with thrift stores and book shops)

we don't care at all if The Rapture ever roll through town or if the night life is 'buzzing' or if there are no 'rad skate spots' - we just want to be comfortable, financially and physically. Warm weather a big plus (though not necessarily for ME)

My biggest flaw is that I'm severely impressionable - I once had to be deprogrammed by my mom and then-girlfriend because I was ordering all those crazy late night infomercial books about getting rich through real estate and stuff. I am highly, HIGHLY suggestible, so you may very well convince me to move to a certain state. Imagine the kudos!

Well, ILX...

Where should we go?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

California.

sorry.

We have about $1200 between us to get started (security deposit, a month to look for jobs, etc) and NOTHING holding us here.

well, except for your lack of money to move anywhere nice and afford to live for a month!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

KEntucky, because of the job prospect. In this economy, that's the most important consideration.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Milwaukee. Of course. It's cheap, friendly, and totally packed with cheap books and records and beer.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Milwaukee. Of course. It's cheap, friendly, and totally packed with books and records and beer.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Kirsten, how do you feel about Milwaukee?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOVE IT.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

those cheap books went fast.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Laverne and Shirley got so much worse after they moved to California, so I think Milwaulkee is your answer.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And I think that the rather extensive travelling I've done validates my strong desire to stay here.
x-post

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Milwaukee. Of course. It's cheap, friendly, and totally packed with books and records and beer.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Milwaulkee? Really? Hmmm...I'm intrigued. Tell me more. How's the weather? What are apartments like ($$$)?

I can honestly say I know NOTHING about Milwaulkee except I SURE love all that beer! I drink The Beast all the time

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And I only took out the second
"cheap" because I realized I'd typed
"cheap" twice. And I didn't realize the message had posted twice.

Donut bitch, if you are being sarcastic, I will punch you, and I can punch surprisingly hard. Also, I am kind of drunk. That will only make things worse for you.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The weather can be kind of crappy in the winter (very, very cold) but apartments are soooo cheap. For example, I have a two-bedroom, 1 1/2 bath less than 10 minutes from downtown for $700/month. And heat is included, so the winter isn't even that bad.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlottesville, VA
Central Coast of Calif.
Charleston, SC

Skottie, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

milwaukee even has a downtown!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Milwaukee still have a strong lefty/socialist presence around town?

Texas sucks in every conceivable way and isn't very cheap. Move here if you like four months of 90-100+ heat and lots of humidity. (Maybe it's not all that awful, but the weather is shit, and the only places I'd choose to move in Texas would be south/east Ft. Worth, maybe Austin or out in the middle of nowhere W. Texas.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i would advise against milwaukee personally.

proof?
my friend once drove up to milwaukee on a whim to try and have some fun. he asked around, what there was to do. a lady told him "drive to chicago"

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

when i had to flee new york i went to portland. you'd probably hate it though.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure it does. There are two major universities here (and a couple of small ones) and it's a pretty liberal city. I guess I don't know why people are being assholes about it.
x-post
And Todd Swiss's post is pretty crazy. There is plenty of fun stuff to do. But, I mean, I'm not going to sit here and try to sell total strangers on a place I happen to think is really fun. So whatever.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

cleveland is good. no colder than nyc, less cold than milwaukee, waaaaay cheaper (my pals pay $900 for a 3bdrm apt w/ hardwood floors & high ceilings in a cool part of town), lots of amazing dive bars, beautiful state park system, good thrift/bookstores, tons of great cheap food, healthy music scene...

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has me considering Milwaukee now, if I ever have enough money to move. Cold weather >>>> hot weather.

I don't suppose there's a decent art-school (or uni./college with a decent photography program) in town?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

www.miad.edu

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i couldn't agree more about the cold weather >>>> hot, but despite my occasional posturing here on the threads, Lady is unquestionably the boss in my house.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

If Michigan is out of the running because of cold weather, then Illinois has to be as well.
I vote for Kentucky. Job prospect, good climate.

Milo, come to Milwaukee and you can get cold weather AND hot weather!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Define hot.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

low 90s, high humidity. not 'oh my god get me to the nearest A/C STAT' hot, but still 'blergh let's just sit here and watch the sweat collect on us' hot

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

All the times i've been in chicago was in summertime - is it really as cold as Michigan in the winter?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well what part of Michigan? doesn't get quite as cold as the UP, but it's every bit as cold as, say, Detroit.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Louisiana is nice and we need more interesting people here. New Orleans is very very cheap and we have huge flying roaches and termites that eat through concrete.

holy jesus, i had no idea.

we weren't lookin' anywhere near the upper peninsula but i confess the very idea of the place intrigues me greatly. We were heading towards ann arbor / ypsi

tell me more about louisianna. what kinda job could one get there?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Cleveland is pretty cool.

Skottie, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ah man, i know. i love ohio, but Wifey sez no way. She's from Columbus, so she'd know. But man SO much great music has come from Ohio!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

where is this vast amoung of space in Illinois you speak of? The state ranks 48th in the amount of public land.

I think we're all forgotting the important factor that this city must provide excellent opportunities for adultery.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Pittsburgh it is, then.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, it snowed again in Vermont today. Probably rules us out, huh?

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oops - you must remember, we're coming from New York City. You can't swing a dead cat here without hitting a cluster of people, buildings and 'ambience'

I tend to think of Illinois as having a bit of a rural sprawl - or am I just romanticizing the midwest as I'm often prone to do?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, once you get away from Chicago it is just farm after farm after po-dunk town after farm. but it's almost all privately owned, so the most you can do is admire it from your car as you whiz past.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

myth debunked!

wow thanks for that tip. I kinda thought in between a lot of those farms were houses for rent, that kinda thing.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

what about oregon? or is it cold there?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. and rainy.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

too far. our car won't make it.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, i'm not from where you're from :) Oregon is a place i'd like to visit if i ever visit.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm from L.A. (but i live in Long Beach right now) visit any time!!

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in Pittsburgh last weekend and paid $3 for two pints of Yuengling. Maybe Strongo would join you in the 'Burgh.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pittsburgh has what your looking for. The only downfall is the weather can get a little cold in the winter. If I didn't grow up there It would be top of the list for places to move to.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Pittsburgh is the most beautiful city in the east, no doubt -- and I'm not from there, either. Tremendous food and music, too. Apparently very difficult to get a lucrative job, though.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i say Sacramento or Santa Cruz, CA.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of BOC love there, plus noise scenes.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Pittsburgh is pretty and Cleveland is cheap (I pay 350 for a two bedroom apartment and, ahem, the place upstairs is for rent). However the job market is skittish. But for God's sake, Cheap Beer.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to this bar in Garrettsville Ohio with 50 cent draft beer! jesus wept.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, depending on where you are the rent in cleveland is insane - a friend of mine was paying like $220 for a one bedroom off st.clair.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

please don't move to santa cruz.

ASTROG! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, I live off of St. Clair (in Collinwood).

oh no

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If you were thinking of moving to Michigan, your finances are a bit low for the Arbor/Ypsi area. Detroit is fun for a while, but for being a major city it turns into a small town pretty quickly.
