Bags for people on bikes?

The $5 thrift store black nylon messanger back I've been using since ~1998-9 is finally starting to die, tearing on the seam between the strap and the rest of the bag (Serves me right for trying to fit my bike pump in there). So I'm in need of a new bag. Here are my specifications:

must be able to haul a serious amount of shit -- today I have a medium sized binder, a couple of smallish textbooks, a few notebooks, a cable for locking, stencils, 2 cans of spray paint, and bunch of smallish shit (cable for my seat, lock deicer, writing supplies, markers). In the winter, I like to have room for hat, gloves, extra clothing, etc.

I'd like to be able to use this thing to cart stuff like a couple LPs or some groceries home.

Price is pretty key, I figure I might be able to drop $50 tops?

Must be comfortable for biking! I can't stand backpacks with dangling crap.

I must not look like an asshat with those overpriced wicked nice messanger bags with all the faggy colors and whatnot.

I would prefer one with say 2 or 3 pockets to one with 343498 compartments that are useless since you can't fill them all to capacity at once.

I'm sure there's all kinds of useful dodads on the outside of these things for cellphones, writing implements, lashing clothing to, etc. Tell me about this stuff!

Either a backpack or a messanger bag is fine.

I don't wanna look like an Artic expedition.

(Obviously, no such bag exists!)

look at the bags made by jandd. they're really sturdy (i've been using my backpack on a daily basis for the last 12 years, i figured out), and they have a decent selection of different kinds of bags-- messenger bags, backpacks, bike bags, luggage, etc.

i assume they have a website, but considering that i'm on dial up, i'll let you do the searching. enjoy!

i just want a simple sodding messenger bag with no goddamn bells and whistles that's not a backpack and doesn't look like a fucking potato sack. too much to ask it seems.

I've found some decent messenger-type bags at Wilson's Leather outlet stores for about $50. I don't know if they're big enough for your purposes, though. I gave up trying to cram all my shit in one and just bought a backpack.

Crumpler bags look pretty bombproof. Dunno if they do what you're asking for.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

those are pretty cool but I just ordered a bag!

Now you can have your own piece of the Dot-Bomb revolution. We have a limited supply of messenger bags left over from the old days when we manufactured for the now defunct on-line delivery service Kozmo.com. Made from PVC truck tarp, 1000D Cordura, and silver heat-shield liner. Features the same integrated padded shoulder strap design as our other messenger bags except the Kozmo bags use a quick release Fastex buckle instead of the seat buckle closure. Under the flap there are three large open pockets, one zippered pocket and pen slots. We also have a limited number of bags available with the Kozmo logo. You can choose with or without logo from the menu below. This bag is x-large and is the same size as our Kremlin messenger bag. You can check out the Kremlin page to get an idea of the size. Ships same day for orders placed before 1:00pm Pacific Time M-F.

the rei outlet has a $35 special on a timbuk2 bag . . . granted, it's one of the smallest sizes of that bag, but very cheap for what you get.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm reviving this thread b/c i am really in the market for a messenger bag. i've been looking at the dana designs "ti" bag for a while . . . seems like all messenger bags are just so expensive!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Are fanny packs fashionably acceptable AND non-ironic yet?

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My experience with biking bags is pretty much limited to CamelBaks. Mine has served me well for 5 years. Just don't fill them with booze, the reservoir will never be the same. Unless all you drink is booze, in which case you're going to crash and die soon.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck all those other bags. you need a ReLoad bag:

i need one too. i don't have very much money. i need to carry these things (not all at once, probably): computers, lawyering school books, 40s, sandwiches. jon did you get a defective chrome bag? did you like it? do other brands sell defective bags via the interweb?

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 20 May 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

jon did you get a defective chrome bag?

no i got a KOSMO.COM one that was too big

I love mine

JW (ex machina), Saturday, 20 May 2006 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Probably as best place to ask as any? Best Bike bag for Laptop + DSLR? Those Bailey Bags look good. The Timbuk2 one with laptop insert has a slot too small for the MBP. The Chrome laptop bags don look quite right, neither do the manhattan portage ones.
