been on for a few weeks now. i am especially wondering how they filmed the bit where some of the players run onto the pitch - bluescreen or real? argh

stevem likes mambo (classic)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Cafu's face as he lays it on for Ronaldinho is a real delight

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was Denilson who chested it down?

It's a purely beautiful advert, Ruud apart.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

it's better than Brazil Airport and The Tanker one, altho Cantona's role is tres disappointing this time

but really, HOW IS IT DONE?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

a few weeks back - the night of the last Club FT in fact - at half time during the Chelsea v Arsenal Champions League match they showed the segment where Ronaldinho does that flick and switch trick on the pitch - only, it's shown in ultra ultra slow motion and lasts about a minute. Incredible - anyone seen it since?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

football magic, don't try and understand, just bask.

Is the portuguese who grabs the brazilian by the head and says hello really close to his face Quaresma?

x-post

that was the trailer for the whole thing Steve, first shown on Soccer AM about a month ago

chris (chris), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i need to start recording Soccer AM via Sky+ - I miss it somewhat. and also this way i can ffwd the Soccerette and other crap bits.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not BETTER than the airport commercial. it's a sequel to it, at most. i mean, it's more or less the same theme played all over again...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

James is most put out by this advert as at the end you can clearly see the cameraman going along the line left to right & then the camera shows Ronaldo & Carlos from right to left. I guess it's the little details that matter!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

sequels are sometimes better Jay

you can download it at http://nikefootball.nike.com

i'm wondering who directed it. maybe John Woo again??

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the Pepsi one looks rubbish by comparison

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the Pepsi ad is utter tripe.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the point of this advert? Obviously Portugal are in it because they're hosting Euro 2004 in a month's time - but brazil?
Huh???

It annoys me. It should have been France, the holders, in Brazil's place.

de, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

this ad annoys me. i can't put my finger on why. i think it's smart-arsey and show-y, perhaps. i was watching tv with my g/f the other night and it came on. i was like "change the channel, watching this ad is hard work!" she expressed surprise, thinking it was the kind of ad i'd enjoy. but it isn't.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's because it's Nike. Because they know why you play sport.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

there are two versions: one with van nistelrooy and one with totti (in the same roles.)

ronaldinho did his little flip-trick against celtic. it has been the talk of playgrounds ever since. (yeah I'm a big kid.)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

kilian OTM. it's not really funny. the airport one was.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

This ad is, I think you will find, classic. A fat, grumpy Cantona drinking coffee is the amusing highlight, as is the camera going across the line at the end to see the battered, unamused faces of the Brazilians.

Oh, and the refs tackle near the end.

Oh, and Nistelroys little cameo.

And the cool tricks.

Yeh, its a classic.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the bit when they barge into Cantona rules. As does the amazing bit of fanny dangle half way through courtesy of one Cristiano Ronaldo.

Also, this ad shows quite how much Portugal's stock has risen in recent years, despite a poor showing in the World Cup.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

*grabs stevem by the cheek*

....

olé!!!

(add me into the Classic camp please!)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

They will never top the HELL one.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

This : The airport ad :: Craft : Art. I was expecting a lot more. And no way does it compare to the Tanker ads. One for the fans, this.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

'Also, this ad shows quite how much Portugal's stock has risen in recent years, despite a poor showing in the World Cup'

*Gnashes teeth in exasperation* But isn't it for Portugal 04?!!

de, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Which Brazil won't be playing in?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

But thanks to the magic of Nike they can!

Also, it isn't "for" anything except Nike.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it. The Totti/van Nistelrooy thing confused me for a while. Roberto Carlos' face at the end is perfect.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt - Well exactly. So it *doesn't* 'show quite how much Portugal's stock has risen in recent years' on that basis does it?
Brazil's presence in the ad is therefore curious and unnecessary.

Andrew - Also exactly. It is ostensibly for the Euros but because France, the holders are adidas (aren't they?) you get this ludicrous thing.

de, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The ref's tackle is the best bit, though it palls after a couple of viewings.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My brother on Denilson:

"Why is he smiling? He doesn't do anything!"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Brazil are in the ad because of multi-million sponsorship deal with Nike. Ditto Portugal one would suspect.

Does Nike's sponsorship of Portugal predate Euro2004 by much?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

William - exactly, that's the whole point, he is a zen footballing ninja

chris (chris), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume real refs aren't allowed to appear in lucrative ads but it'd be way cool if that was Collina going in for the two-footed tackle at the end.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. That's WHY they are in it but there's no justification for it.
I refuse to be amused or charmed by the bloody thing as a result.
It's poor they couldn't find one other European team to sponser.

de, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Portugal do better fanny dangle though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Nike should do an ironic one of England in the early nineties. Mark Wright wins a header, Ince goes in hard, Carlton Palmer hoofs it forward. That would make me happy.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too.

Ironic?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

de, they do, they also sponsor Holland, Russia and Croatia

chris (chris), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronaldinho show is on Sky tonight. Barca vs Real Betis. It clashes with National Lampoon's European Vacation. There's a joke in there somewhere.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ronaldinho and quaresma vs denilson and Joaquin? wow Ultimate FD

chris (chris), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the advert makes me how much I dislike portugese ronaldo.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we fit Geoff Thomas into the proposed England ad?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The ball will go out of the stadium and Geoff Thomas can take on the Totti / Van Nistelrouy role and slice it down the road.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Collina has a deal with Adidas or Reebok I think, preventing him from appearing in this advert - huge shame. Unless I'm wrong and his deal IS with Nike - but that can't be.

It's Brazil v Portugal because Nike wuv Brazil more than any man could love his brother, and Portugal are hosting Euro 2004 and are the sexiest team to have beaten Brazil since the last World Cup (it wouldn't work with Paraguay). It is actually a bit annoying but they always win me over with their ads, much like annoying Brazil do with their cheeky footballing charms.

There's a 'Cantona edit' on the Nike site but it's not so great - I re-iterate that the use of him is a bit poor here I feel.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy Sinton pulls off a cheeky stepover.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

surely it should be chris waddle kicking the ball out of the stadium

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i wonder if nike is paying anyone to keep this thread going.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, me

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

they're only a small company so they need all the help they can get. personally i don't care for their actual products much.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

me too.

Nikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

'de, they do, they also sponsor Holland, Russia and Croatia'

Well that pisses me off more then. Holland - Davids, Van Nistelrooy, Stam all been in the ads before. Then you've got van Bommel, Melchiot, van der Vaart, Cocu, Makaay....etc. Not enough stars for them?
Ach.

de, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

do you work for Adidas?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Better come clean eh.

adedas, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife gets very annoyed with them because they keep grunting 'olé' for no apparent reason. She asks me why they say it and I say because it sounds hispanic, but I'm just making it up.

I like Roberto Carlos's face at the very end. He is the Benny Hill of football.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Which makes Ronaldo Ken Dodd?

de, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Collina = Marty Feldman

de, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The ad is a global ad innit, so Nike want to use their global brand leader, which is Brazil; the fact that brazil are not in Europe is merely the fault of the stoopid Portuguese, and Nike shan't let that get in the way. The ad piggybacks the tournament and is a way to show off Brazil.

NB - Was the Van Gall 'get the ball from the crazy robots' for the last euro Champeenships?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

portugal are pretty much the fake brazil anyway, big phil and deco, it's clever brand continuity. i'd quite like owen's wooden face in there to balance it out, or maybe rooney thieving in the car park instead of van nisty. ronan so bang otm about the hell ad tho

prima fassy (mwah), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

is the Hell one where Cantona sez 'Au Revoir' gruffly? i'd forgotten that one.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Pepsi ad could have been strengthened by Roberto Carlos and Beckham arguing over who was going to take the free kick. Or perhaps Beckham standing back guiltily texting someone.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 15 April 2004 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's much more annoying than the airport one. For a start, why on earth would blokes go around saying Ole to one another? (Of course the answer is that it's the only globally known word in the Portuguese language) (gosh there's a challenge...) Ole is definitely the most annoying aspect of the ad, among many. The lads' faces at the end almost redeem it.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

But isn't Ole a Spanish word that the bullfighters use?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ole is Portugese for "Nuts!"

Jonnie, Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

they are saying 'Ole!' cos they keep trying to outdo each other. Figo's initial exchange with Ronaldo is marvellous.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

also Scolari's bemused expression as the ball flies past down the tunnel

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi, Giraffe, what exactly do you want them to say?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Denilson to Figo: "We will destroy you, you colonialist pigdog" (whatever that is in Portuguese)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dida to Scolari: "I loved you in The Conversation"

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Nós o destruiremos, você pigdog de colonialist"

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Then he remembers how much Betis paid for him, and he laughs.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather they shut their taps and got on with the job. Apart from steve's suggestion about Dida and Scolari of course.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't really get the Hackman comparisons actually

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)
