... and I wouldn't bother you with this if I hadn't already looked all over the web in vain. I could buy a shitload of Snapples, yes, but I WANT TO MAKE IT MYSELF, goddammit.
Something that involves teabags (not leaves) and lemon joice would be lovely.

Thanks again,

make tea. put ice in it.

iceman, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

..and if you brew it in the sunlight, you can make it an all-day project!

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i use two teabags per 8oz of boiling water and let things brew for a while because i like strong tea. while it's sitting, carefully mix equal parts sugar and water in a pan over low heat. add the resulting simple syrup to the tea to taste, and perhaps some lemon juice mixed with powdered sugar if you want lemony flavor.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Brew a good strong cup of Yorkshire Tea For Hard Water, put in freezer.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

nice one, lauren! how much is 8oz in litres?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I was being serious there. I mean, it's just cold sweet tea with some fruit in, innit?

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

that's about a half-litre, i think.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend used to make it alot when he stayed here for a while. I think he just squeezed some lemons into tea and threw loads of ice in, then stuck it in the fridge. It was very refreshing.

What about alcoholic iced tea?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

bourbon or captain morgan's spiced rum go really well in iced tea.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

and vodka, but vodka can go in just about anything.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

do you actually boil the water WITH the bags or do you just add the boiling water to them, as normal?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

pour the boiling water on to the bags, as usual.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

sweet!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Lauren otm all the way through. Traditionally the tea for iced tea is steeped longer than if you were going to drink it hot; I don't know if this is because of the difference in taste between temperatures or simply because it will be diluted somewhat by the ice.

(Southern restaurants often add a pinch of baking soda. I have no idea what it might do.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope it's good weather this weekend. I feel like sitting in my garden drinking.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

brew 2 bags hong kong style black tea.
add 1 part condensed milk to three parts tea when finished brewing.
add ice, or some tapioca balls if that's your thing.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds awful nice, too. but i think i'll settle for summin without milk ...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've really been on a tea bender lately, and here's how I've been doing iced: Simmer tea in a teapot with orange juice, honey, and sugar, then put the teapot in the freezer until it's suitably cold.

Get a large pitcher (2 quarts mabye) use two family sized tea-pons or 4 or so regular sized ones. Bring to a boil with water to cover. Pour in pitcher, add cold water, add ton of sugar, stir. Put in fridge and drink when chilled.

Suntea is also good and easy.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

suntea rules in summer.

for un-sweet tea
about 6 Lipton tea bags (NOT the granules/instant)
Bring about 3 cups of water to a boil
Lob in the teabags
Turn off the heat, wait abt 5 minutes for the concentrated color (remember you're going to dilute this)
Pour over ice cubes and cold water in a giant pitcher
put it in the fridge
drink to the South.

Jay Kid, seek ye the new-fangled Lipton brand Cold Brew iced tea. Now you don't need to bring water to a boil! Just add the mixture to some cold water, let sit for a bit, and ta-da, now you've got something to sweeten up and add lemon (or lime) to!

Sun tea is lovely, FYI. I haven't had some in a long while, but I remember drinking that a great many times when I was younger.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 15 April 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Luzianne beats Lipton's ass in terms of iced tea.

and making it by the glass is bogus.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Luzianne is good if you're brewing iced tea the old fashioned way, and I'd be willing to try any sort of Cold Brew equivalent they made, but I grew up with Lipton and I got used to that sort of iced tea flavor. Although I agree with you re: making iced tea by the glass; I always make iced tea by the pitcher, as any decent Texan does. (See? No need to revoke my state citizenship here! *grins*)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 15 April 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A favorite variant: Celestial Seasonings makes something called Grandma's Tummy Mint tea. (Or used to -- I haven't seen it lately. But any mint tea will do). Brew/steep as in all the other recipes above. Refrigerate overnight. An icy glass of mint tea is shockingly good when you come in steaming from a hot summer day. Disregard if you hate mint, obv.

spittle (spittle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dont know if you can get this stuff elsewhere but Twinings make a lovely peach and something tea (peach and passionfruit? I cant recall), which is WAY better iced than hot. So I steep that stuff til its nice and strong, add a buttload of sugar and chill it. Very tasty.

XX-post

Iced Tea or Ahhhsss-tea if you're from the South

In a half gallon glass/silver/crockery pitcher place
--6 Lipton tea bags
--A lemon, quartered (and squeezed into said pitcher)
--4/5 springs of mint (spearmint, not peppermint)
Pour in 1/4 pitcher boiling water over the above
Allow to steep 15 minutes
Fish out the detritus, and throw it away (or put it in your pocket for good luck, but DON'T tell anyone)
Fill up the pitcher with cold water

Serving iced tea:
Fill a large glass with ice. Full of ice, not just a little bit. Coarsely crushed ice is even better. Pour in the tea. Add sugar if you like.

Very refreshing.
Leave out the mint/lemon if you want to, but why would you want to?

Skottie, Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

THANKS!

You are the nicest people in the world. I'll be sure to post which recipe I chose. It's for a my high school chums and myself, who are going to make fools ourselves trying to play our first cricket game this weekend.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

adding the sugar before the teas is U&K if you want sweet tea. when it's cold it doesn't dissolve proper.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

very true. this is what the simple syrup is good for - it mixes in at any temperature.
