Stepping up to the plate...

I've just been rejected by the only post-grad school I applied to (political science at Columbia) and I'm now wondering whether I didn't treat the whole application process rather too lightly. Are you actually expected to chat with admission counselors and professors in order to push your application. Also, having finished my MA 4 years ago, am I now 'too old' as a PhD candidate?
Any insight very welcome, as I'm now wondering if it's worth reapplying next year.

i'm on the verge of failing my sculpture class because i was too depressed to turn up. Now I feel even worse. I'm such a cockhead.

you are certainly not too 'old'. I'd say it definitely is worth applying again next year and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't ask them why you were not given a place this time round. I've done this when rejected for jobs on a number of occasions and gained some useul insights.

I think I am due to fail my exam in June as I can't seem to focus on studying. Too much stress, aarrrgghhh!

One of my applications for summer funding just got rejected -- via email, too, the bastards.

Baaderoni -- I second Mark. You're definitely not "too old"! As for talking to profs, it's U&K, not just about the rejection, but during the application process if you decide to reapply. Figure out who in the department you'd want to work with, read up on some of their recent research, and get in touch. It shows them you're serious about the program, and also gives you a chance to see if these are people you really want to spend the next 5 or so years working closely with...

I wouldn't worry so much about admission counsellors, though. With PhD programs, it's the faculty who make the decisions.

You should apply to at least TEN PhD programs if you want to get into ONE. Don't fee, bad you didn't get in.

Heh. Wishful thinking, "don't fee."

I have failed in this aspect several times this week.

This morning I failed to go to Saturday school although i had volunteered. This will further encourage hate from my prinicpal and make the rest of my school year hell. however there was a sexy boy in my bed and I just couldn't bring myself to leave him so soon. (chalk up one success)

I puked up my dinner and am posting about it on the internet META.

twenty years pass...

I have just failed to repair a tent pole whose elastic had snapped. Could find a way to remove the end ferrule with the end of the old elastic fixed within. Still, at least I now know what a ferrule is and that the elastic is called shock cord.

Was this during an actual camping trip, while putting up the tent, in the pouring rain?
