Sweet terms: "eep", "eek", "arf" (and the rest I can't remember)

Is there such thing as a dictionary for sounds made by characters in comics? I've not read too many comics, although I think I'm aware of their influence on the idioms of certain posters. Although I love the sounds of the various cartoon words I see used here on this board, and more often than not understand them in the context of what is being said, I can't retain them easily, or I find that when it comes to using the ones I do remember, I lack confidence - never sure if I've used them correctly. Alas, lack of confidence hasn't so far stopped me from using such words, and I fear I've turned into somewhat of a mumpsimus, using them consistently in the same but incorrect way. It would help people like me to have a definitive table of comic-words to refer to... could we use this thread?

If they don't derive from comics, forgive me -- whatever they are, would you go mad, please, and list as many as you can think, along with their meanings, for me to refer to in the future? Cuh, lol!

And I thought I wouldn't be able to get them down quick enough.

Aren't these a form of onomatopoeia? Written versions of verbal sounds we make when we are surprised, scared, whatever?

I don't think onomatopoeia includes phonetic representations of non-verbal sounds made by humans, really. I don't know if there is a word for this.

I write "arf" a lot these days. I blame Rainy. I say it out loud slightly less, though apparently enough for one person to start responding to it with "grr."

"Eep" or eek" are the best phonetic approximations of the alarm cry of a pika.

Great link Jerry the Nipper ... I've learnt a new word! "Transfenestration" means "thrown out of a window".

Duffy, Saturday, 2 July 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

There's also 'defenestration'.

Orange (Orange), Saturday, 2 July 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

defenestration is being thrown out of a window so that you fall down to the ground

transfenestration is being thrown out of a window so that you travel horizontally parallel to the ground
