getting home from a night out to find there are rumours you hooked up with someone you fancy when in fact you didn't

good or bad?

Will this help or hinder my chances??? I didn't know whether to deny everything, or admit fancying the person, or or or. I denied everything, jokily, in the end.

People and their chatter is funny!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to do more long thread titles.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither confirm nor deny. Be coy. Stoke that rumour mill.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Stoke that rumour mill". Ronan, you bring out the Big Ron in me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

disappointing surely.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. even being linked with people you don't fancy is classic.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ex-flatmate to thread.

If I looked at a girl - she was going to be my wife

If I talked to a girl - that was it, we were about to have or just had had rampant sex

If a girl stayed over - he imploded with excitement

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you check your entire room for cameras and bugging devices, Chris?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I never thought of that

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I thought Matt, although I denied it I kind of laughed alot to make it seem like maybe something happened, I didn't want to imply something had too much though.

It's such a funny situation people mocking you about something you'd actually like have done. My friends have taken to singing "Ronan has a girlfriend, Ronan has a girlfriend" playground style.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry massive x-post

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"did you hear the rumour about me and you? I didn't know WHAT to say! I couldn't confirm it because it wasn't true but I didn't want to deny it because then it might seem like I don't really, really fancy you, totally, and I do!!!!"

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe you should write her a letter.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan is your entire life an episode of Byker Grove?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus R that first post doesn't seem hard.

maybe a mixtape??? of all Underground Resistance records??????

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think in general, it helps your chances, because, if anything, it plants the idea in her head! Also, it kind of forces things to come to a head (heh heh) - that is, if she *doesn't* fancy you she'll set things right, and if she does fancy you, she'll act funny and coy-like. Which can sometimes be hard to tell apart, but still!

So long as she doesn't actually think the rumours are coming from you!

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow I knew this was a Ronan thread.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So long as she doesn't actually think the rumours are coming from you!

Oh man, disaster case scenario

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ultimate dud if you happen to be seeing someone else (and all the other qualifiers in the question are true) - all the stick, none of the... carrot.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus I hope she's not seeing someone else!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I'm a bit worried she's alot taller than me, big shoes???

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It kind of planted the idea in my head also.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Big shoes? For you, definitely. The bigger the better. Maybe stilts?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

There was this time a few years ago when Chris looked at my girlfriend. Seems his ex-flatmate was spot on.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

jaysus

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't make me start perving on the joys of shorter boys... ;-)

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I'm a bit worried she's alot taller than me, big shoes???

Does she have a large Adam's Apple?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

big hands?

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor dress sense?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess all that makes me a man. :-(

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

except you don't have big hands or an Adam's apple, and your suit jacket is pretty roxor

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if your dress sense is gaudy and bad.

Back to the topic, this more or less happened to me once and ultimately cost me an opportunity for rampant shagging.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, Kate, I reckon you're too lovely to be a man.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

you're all better than this!

she's not a man, hur de hur....

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That includes lovely gay guys who perve on Stevem and James Busted.

x-post

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I met another crush at the shops, we had a beautiful moment of connection about channel hopping incessantly on the radio while driving, and turning music up to anti-social levels even with people in the car. I am now smugly eating pizza. the smugness will be gone afterwards when i need a cigarette though!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Multi-crushing is a good idea, so I'm told.

See, this is otm. In my situation, I wasn't sure I fancied her but was pretty sure I fancied one of her housemates. Suffice to say, both went tits up. First Girl and I had a brief chat about 'us' after the rumours went into overdrive and both denied wanting to get it on. So I was all set to move on when the 2nd girl found out I fancied her and froze me out for months (not to mention she and another guy were dancing around their own romantic entanglement).

The following year it turned out First Girl did actually fancy me after all, however by then she was also the uni bike and both a rotten and despised person to boot. Secongd Girl's relationship lasted about 3 weeks and she became a social parasite. I won :-).

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

both went tits up? you're a terrible man!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"I thought, for a moment, that it could have happened but I had got amnesia!! I am glad that that wasn't the case...I want to remember every moment, with you, for the rest of my life......!!! xxxx"

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "tits up" is a poor choice of words in this context!

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds like a good mixtape Richard.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I gave robbie an e too many.

sorry, ronan.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it's OK.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's such a great thing*. It's like - "Woah! people are thinking we look good together. I *am* attractive. Maybe word will reach her about it or maybe she'd already said something and that prompted the rumour. I love this year."

* not kissing Robbie Lumsden

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

good luck ronan!! women and matters relating to women are TRICKY.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The other related thing that's even greater is when people assume that you and a girl you want to go out with are a couple. Except it goes very shit and emo when it doesn't work out.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

NB's sort of right, one of my crushes and I were spotted holding hands at a party on Sunday, and this aunt goes, "So when did you two become lovers?"

My reply was "Just now."

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

'This aunt'?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The one he was holding hands with.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

*N*, dammit! *N's* sort of right!

I don't think she likes dance, though we share a common love of dancing to "Get Into The Groove" alone in the house.

I'm imagining you and a random girl both dressed in tribute to 80s Madonna, dancing around separate bedrooms in movie style cutaway scenes.

x-post: Shut up!

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You're ruining the memory!

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

man that would be cool!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Holding hands with Barima's aunt?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cause that's the rumour.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It *is* too late to point out my crush and the aunt are separate people entirely, isn't it?

I'm somewhat happy that my crush is 6 years older than me. Now, stop derailing Ronan's thread.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You're welcome to my aunt, N. You sound desperate.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I think mine is the same age.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just amused by the phrase 'this aunt', like the party was overrun with dozens of them.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

as mum-ra?

crosspost

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because it was, N.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm imagining you and a random girl both dressed in tribute to 80s Madonna, dancing around separate bedrooms in movie style cutaway scenes

omg cutest thing ever.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

this sort of thing can be exciting and fun, but it can also turn into an embarrassing nightmare if you've got a bunch of indiscreet drunks for friends. i was at a bar having a giggly moment with tight pants boy a few weeks ago when a mutual friend of ours came staggering over to us and slurred, "i just want you to know that i think this is great. you're both so brilliant, and i think it's so great that you're getting it together." i wanted to D-I-E.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if my parents would approve. That might fit the 80s theme though.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Then what happened, lauren?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan - wait till they go on holiday for the true 80s experience.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

we did jagermeister shots.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

They're away now. My brother and his girlfriend are here for the weekend though, rubbing their relationship IN MY FACE. I can't even find anyone to go for a pint with.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I did some jager last night too, ugh.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! And then you got it together?

I can't decide if the whole thing is like a handy catalyst or a 'schtop - this flirtation is not ready yet!' obstacle.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, what happened to your Glasgow trip?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ew, Ronan, tell them to stop rubbbing their "business" in your face because it's unhygenic and probably illegal.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

he heard about robbie lumsden.

crosspost

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it can be either, it sort of forces some kind of action though. "I want to CLARIFY my relationship with you, publicly"

(x-post my family decided to get me decks for my birthday and brothers and sisters are giving me money instead, for this purpose. I keep procrastinating, I really should go over sometime)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah Dan, that joke was as inevitable as the return of a yo-yo.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The procrastination scene here is kicking.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard it's not quite up and running yet.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! And then you got it together?

among other things, i got a really bad hangover. it's a very funny story.

I can't decide if the whole thing is like a handy catalyst or a 'schtop - this flirtation is not ready yet!' obstacle.

it functions as both. it depends on your situation.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

you will regret that grolsch advert adaptation, nick.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I will. It is the best advertising campaign of all time, and ripe for endless homage.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been tempted to start a Ghana thread for awhile - I'm developing endless amounts of 'wtf'-ness towards my myriad aunts.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I fgooled artound with a girl here, someone rang up her mum to ask if we were getting married.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Fgooling artound is not to be taken lightly.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghouling around can be taking lightly though. Or even googling around.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Gooling around.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been tempted to start a Ghana thread for awhile

please do. my father's best friend recently finished building a house there and while i'd like to take him up on his offer of a visit, i'd also like to know what i'm getting into. especially with regards to nosy extended families - the place holds like 4 generations, apparently.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

N. is right about the Grolsch ad. The beer is grim but the 'schtop' is not.

Ricardo (RickyT), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if you say so...!

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY! how did i get mixed up in this sordid thread???

it gets like a girl can't leave the room without being discussed by a bunch of old ladies!

(and for the record: i did kiss N. It wasn't my proudest moment, i was drunk, he obviously liked me a lot more than i liked him and i regret it now. FINE?)

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
I heard a rumour about someone!

Storefront Church (688), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

do tell!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 11:23 (nineteen years ago)
