Will this affect your masturbatory habits? Your work habits? Your budget? Do you think workers in the porn industry are adequately protected? Do you ever wish they had a union?

Wait, serious comment time. Of the above activities, only "anal" [intercourse] -- and vaginal intercourse, assuming that counts as "rudimentary" -- are known to pose high risks for HIV transmission.
It only takes a small number of high-risk activities, occuring in a network where many people have large numbers of partners, to explain the relatively high frequency of AIDS in the porn industry.
Okay, back to the fisting jokes!

And of course needle-sharing is another common route of HIV transmission, but I'm not assuming it's more frequent in porn than in some other professions, whatever I might suspect/guess about this...

Actually, there's a registry of...on-screen talent that requires that its members be tested every 30 days. This organization, which called for the 2-month moratorium on new productions, found that two of its members are HIV positive and immediately got the word out. AIDS rates are actually quite low among this group.
Needle-sharing is probably not an issue in this group, because they must take the monthly tests to stay on the registry.
How is that protection???? You're still getting fisted!
Rubber gloves reduce the chance of mixing bodily fluids, which means "safer sex." I can't comment on other traumas associated with anal penetration.
