Will this affect your masturbatory habits? Your work habits? Your budget? Do you think workers in the porn industry are adequately protected? Do you ever wish they had a union?

I admit I read the title of this thread slightly differently.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I wrote it with some deliberate ambiguity.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

better question: if your date likes the kink a tad and in the course of business suggests putting on porn, which you are embarassed to admit you have, but ok because how many girls will actually EVER suggest porn, let alone on a second date, and during the porn film a rim job takes place, and your date asks if you like that (the rimmer)because she really wants to give you one, right now, do you accept and push aside the fact that the person you've been kissing actually enjoys licking ass, and probably has many times before?

dark star, Friday, 16 April 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i misread this thread title as "pornatorium"

it sounded so magical.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet dark star is a Trident shill.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Pornatorium would be a brothel, I imagine. Porne being the Greek for prostitutes.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

pornateria!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Make sure your tray is clean before you slide it down the counter.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

good things end with "-mania" and "-teria."

pornatarium.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

What with all the unprotected fisting, rimming, anal, and facially aimed showers of cum, not to mention more rudimentary sexual practices, can anybody be shocked that people can get HIV working in porn? It's now treated like a legitimate part of the entertainment industry but I never really thought about this flaccid-making aspect too much.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like sausages. only good until you think about how it's made.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What is protected fisting???? (please tell me it does NOT involve a catcher's mitt)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

rubber gloves, dur.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

How is that protection???? You're still getting fisted!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Dan.

Wait, serious comment time. Of the above activities, only "anal" [intercourse] -- and vaginal intercourse, assuming that counts as "rudimentary" -- are known to pose high risks for HIV transmission.

It only takes a small number of high-risk activities, occuring in a network where many people have large numbers of partners, to explain the relatively high frequency of AIDS in the porn industry.

Okay, back to the fisting jokes!

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the potential for drug-related HIV transmission (i.e. sharing needles) also likely to exist in the porn industry? Not that I'm saying all porn actors are also drun users, but still...

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

drun = drug, obv

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That is less intrinsic to the job, though. You can easily do porn without injecting drugs, but insisting on condoms apparently hurts a career badly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No doubt it's not intrinsic to the job. I was just pointing out that it's another high risk activity that very well has some participants in the large number of folks involved in the industry.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary Carey, an adult movie star who ran for governor of California last fall, said she had not worked with the HIV-infected actor or his co-stars. However, as a precaution she was canceling a lesbian porn shoot even though she did not consider it risky.

Oh the fallout!

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Phew, I read that as Mariah Carey.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

So did I! ("Ah, so that's what she's been up to these days...")

And of course needle-sharing is another common route of HIV transmission, but I'm not assuming it's more frequent in porn than in some other professions, whatever I might suspect/guess about this...

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, there's a registry of...on-screen talent that requires that its members be tested every 30 days. This organization, which called for the 2-month moratorium on new productions, found that two of its members are HIV positive and immediately got the word out. AIDS rates are actually quite low among this group.

Needle-sharing is probably not an issue in this group, because they must take the monthly tests to stay on the registry.

How is that protection???? You're still getting fisted!

Rubber gloves reduce the chance of mixing bodily fluids, which means "safer sex." I can't comment on other traumas associated with anal penetration.
