This is kind of an amazing story

This is the story of two Marys. Both are in their early 60s, heavyset, with curly reddish hair. But for years they have worked on opposite ends of the same issues. Mary McFate is an advocate of environmental causes and a prominent activist within the gun control movement. For more than a decade, she volunteered for various gun violence prevention organizations, serving on the boards of anti-gun outfits, helping state groups coordinate their activities, lobbying in Washington for gun control legislation, and regularly attending strategy and organizing meetings.

Mary Lou Sapone, by contrast, is a self-described "research consultant," who for decades has covertly infiltrated citizens groups for private security firms hired by corporations that are targeted by activist campaigns. For some time, Sapone also worked for the National Rifle Association.

But these two Marys share a lot in common—a Mother Jones investigation has found that McFate and Sapone are, in fact, the same person. And this discovery has caused the leaders of gun violence prevention organizations to conclude that for years they have been penetrated—at the highest levels—by the NRA or other pro-gun parties. "It raises the question," says Paul Helmke, the president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, "of what did she find out and what did they want her to find out."

In Whitefish, NRA leader touts power of people

“It’s those 30 million people who make it possible for us to accomplish what we do on their behalf,” said Keene, who also is chairman emeritus of the American Conservative Union and has served on the NRA board since 2000.
Keene recalled that in the early 1960s, gun control wasn’t an issue and the Second Amendment was plainly understood and supported by both political parties. The NRA wasn’t even involved in politics.

I love how these news stories are essentially propaganda.

Like DUH. Maybe it's your politics. Conflict of interest?

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/06/nra-open-carry-guns-backlash-texas

Recently, demonstrators have been showing up in various public places, including coffee shops and fast food restaurants, openly toting a variety of tactical long guns. Unlicensed open carry of handguns is legal in about half the U.S. states, and it is relatively common and uncontroversial in some places.

Yet while unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms.

Let's not mince words, not only is it rare, it's downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one's cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates.

not seeing any discussion of that new ad, basically advocating the creation of a white nationalist militia, what with those folk purposely infiltrating police departments and trump voters in possession of all the fireaerms, thats pretty... fun to see them even more openly advocating for fascism

If you mean this, we watched it somewhat incredulously last night and are still processing.

I try to get inside these people's mindset sometimes. It's like they watched Pink Floyd's The Wall and loved it because the marching hammers that were beating them into submission reminded them of a guidance counsellor who told them not to say "fag".

Damn! That is one scary-ass video. The fact that it is directed specifically toward people with guns, but it says nothing about gun rights or guns at all, but rather spends all its time demonizing huge swathes of the US population, is just downright chilling.

This is a prime example of stochastic terrorism and should be viewed as a threat:

stochastic terrorism:
the public demonization of a person or group resulting in the incitement of a violent act, which is statistically probable but whose specifics cannot be predicted https://t.co/P8EJOFwTtf

fuck the NRA forever obviously, but my dumbass knee-jerk reaction to this lawsuit seeking to dissolve it for self-dealing is that it's just going to be...weaponized by the right as a signal that the libruls are trying to take away your guns. obviously one doesn't imply the other in any sense whatsoever, but they've built arguments on far thinner reeds.
