ginger flavored currant wine produced and bottled by stone's of london, england. since 1740!
i just bought some. drink ideas: on its own over ice with a slice of orange, with vodka and ice and soda ("the ginger snap"), or with ice and soda and a fruit slice ("the long and cool"). i'm about to try the latter.

it's nice! kind of like a more gingery pimm's or a less herbal becherovka, but $10 cheaper than both. a winner, says i!

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

God. Um, Pam the crazy village alcoholic with the bad wig and disgusting eating habits who used to drink in the pub I worked in for years would occasionalyl drink Stones Ginger Wine with something... Um... Scotch? I can't remember. Whatever, no ice, no mixer. She used the Stones as a mixer. That's a proper alcoholic.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

She used to use her hands as shovels when she ate.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

stone's original green ginger wine I think you'll find. Great with whisky, a 'whisky mac' no less, a cold weather drink though.

One time she puked a bit at the CHRISTMAS DINNER TABLE ON CHRISTMAS DAY, caught it in a napkin, but the napkin in her pocket or bag or something and CARRIED ON EATING AND DRINKING WITHOUT LEAVING THE TABLE OR EVEN MENTIONING IT IN ANY WAY.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i have a ways to go before i reach pam status, but i guess you never know.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

She used to put gin in Pimms instead of lemonade.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

pimms is a mixer, it needs gin (and lemonade) to make a drink

Ed (dali), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Where did you get this refreshing drink of ruin, Lauren?

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but just Pimms and gin is mental. I have just Pimms and lemonade when I do have it because I am not an insane alcoholic (anymore).

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

uh oh. i like pimms with whiskey. this doesn't look good!

Where did you get this refreshing drink of ruin, Lauren?

warehouse on broadway. astor wines sells it as well.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Sainsbury's has both the original and their own brand.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm saying this having chugged a bottle of rioja on my own again tonight.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Get catalan tempranillo next.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You reckon?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

Ed (dali), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Get catalan tempranillo next.

i got a bottle of that along with the stone's ginger.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, Astor's a short stroll. Perhaps I'll sip this on my roof and watch the E. Village madness before going out tonight. I have homemade gin to mix for added mentalism.

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

go for it. it seems like a perfect roof drink.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

'homemade gin'?

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

pure booze with juniper berries?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

On second thought if I go now I'm in danger of missing the lovely sunset. Am currently on roof with wireless laptop and revised plan: Campari and soda and citrus-infused vodka. The ginger wine will wait. Thanks for the tip though!

xposts: yeah, vodka with juniper and other botanicals steeped in it. Delicious but sort of toxic-tasting.

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

campari plus soda plus gin plus vermouth is what you should seek, my son

Ed (dali), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

easy on the soda, though

a splash of ginger wine may replace the aurum in taking it to the next stage,

Ed (dali), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm, I'm in an impressionable mood and that sounds oddly delicious but all I have here is sweet vermouth, sadly. Someday I'll have a thread where ILE can be my virtual bartender and I your rooftop guinea pig. Careful though, the roof feels a little precarious.

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

one of my english friends just confirmed to me that stone's is indeed a trashy old alky drink.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

perfect for you lauren!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Pam is my new hero.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though you're not exactly "old".

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't drink enough whisky macs this winter. I didn't realise berries were involved. I don't think of it as a trashy alky drink at all.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with whisky macs is that about half the time you ask for it, the bar staff say "A what?" and you have to explain. But if you ask for "a whisky and ginger wine" then they're likely to look at you like you're an idiot and say "a whisky mac, you mean?".

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought this was about paul scholes

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

why were you having christmas dinner with the village alcoholic, Sick?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though you're not exactly "old"

so you think. good to know that the cash i've laid out for elizabeth arden overnight success skin renewal formula hasn't gone to waste.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you're old, that means I'm old!!!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

have a ginger snap and settle down, rose.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)
