What are your favorite stores on and off this avenue? I sampled a lot today and enjoyed the proximity to Fordham U. First off, I was so excited to see DeLillo's Bakery (old family establishment of DD). We ate lunch at the Retail Market--I had inside out pizza--cheese on the inside and sauce on the outside, and C. had a sandwich from Mike's Deli. I bought a loaf of bread from Madonia Bakery, hand-made ravioli and special sauce from Borgatti's Pasta, and mozzarella cheese and olive oil from Casa della Mozzarella. I had an espresso and C. had a cappuccino from some other café (I forget which) and we got frozen ice/gelato from outside (lemon and pink). I'm now drinking Pellegrino and dreaming of Little Italys. Tell me about your times in Donny D's old hood, or, if you like, make similar recs for Bensonhurst. Has anyone partaken of the open-air clam bar?

Open-air clam bar? Is that legal in your country?

The salumeria with all the sausages hanging down everywhere like meat stalactites. And in the market, the two produce places to the right side, the cheese shop on the left, and the sandwich guys in the back corner.

There's also a deli selling fantastic roast artichokes by the lb., but I don't recall exactly where it is or what its called.

As a Fordham alum, I can say that I've spent much $$ on Arthur Ave. foodstuffs. Ann & Tony's, Dominic's, Full Moon, Giovanni's, etc. Great site: http://www.arthuravenuebronx.com/

DeLillo's Bakery (old family establishment of DD) -> I am assuming you mean Don DeLillo or am I wrong?

Yes, Mr. Americana. I read something on the internet that loosely alligned his family with this bakery, so that's good enough for me, even better than eating at the Jones Street Café with his novel framed on the wall. He went to Fordham too.

how was it? due to various factors (crowdedness, odd hours, my own laziness, laziness of others), i've still never been.

I thought it was a little weird--It was a bit gloppy and saucey and the cheese was a bit stringy and ricotta-y. I had mushrooms and onions and that part was good. The weirdest part was the crust--it was really burnt. I am usually a good girl and eat my crusts but these were so burnt I couldn't eat them. I thought it might just be a fluke--left in the oven too long--but then I read their reviews on the walls and apparently what they are known for is their charboiled crusts! So maybe an acquired taste? I would definitely go back again, but it didn't seem as yummy as Grimaldi's. It was cool, though, it was really informal, no menus, just order from the ingredients listed in front on the wall, and they were out of small pizzas so I had to get a large. Once I got in and sat down they were really nice to me, so I was surprised. I guess it's tough love until you make your way in, and then you are treated like royalty. Has anyone eaten at Garguilo's in C.I.? Another holy grail for me . . .
