Things to do along the J&Z lines

I'm thinking of riding the J/Z from Essex/Delancey to the last stop at Jamaica Center. Are there any interesting places I should stop along the way?

Here's a map for reference.

You are artistic, a bit whimsical, and less iconic
than the train on the other side of the Park.
Others may see you as an odd conglomeration of
new and old-fashioned ideas, but you realize
that's part of your charm.

I don't even know what this means.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sure I would be the F, but I got the 4/5/6 too.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i what little i know of the F, I figured I might be that too.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm, I'm the 4/5/6 too. I kinda thought I would get the L

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

uh... i'm the j/m/z:
You're sort of a shady character. You sneak into the city under the East River, and make a hasty exit soon after. But while the tourists may steer clear of your decrepit stations, you know you're essential to the commuters who depend on you.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also J/M/Z. I was afraid I would end up as the G, but it ain't an option.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

A,C,E

I'm quite pleased with that.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the J/M/Z as well, which is funny because I never take those trains.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

same here. i had to ride that line last night for the first time in ages and cursed it loudly, because during rush hour the j goes express. this meant that i had to ride it one stop, get out at marcy avenue, and wait 20 minutes for an m train to come (3 j's came in the meantime) so i could go to lorimer street. bah.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

One local newspaper recommends the grafitti seen from the elevated ride of the J/Z though another point of view favors the view from the elevated M stop.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I srewed that up, like I always screw up on the JMZ. Once again, the elevated M

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

replace "east river" w/ "hudson river," and this is pretty accurate.

or maybe i'm really the PATH.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

and i think that, in the 7 odd years i've worked and/or lived in or around NYC, i've taken the JMZ maybe like ... twice? all i remember is that the JMZ stations were really gross ... and this was just in manhattan! god only knows what atrocities are in the outer borough JMZ stations (aren't there a few brooklyn JMZ stations that always get selected as the nastiest subway stations?)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

JMZ is really confusing; I never know which way I'm supposed to go on it.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ed IS the A,C,E -- THAT much is accurate!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

A/C/E (Ed): "You are a classic; the quintessential New Yorker. You are cultured and love to travel, though you wouldn't move from New York in a million years. Then again, you may just be a tourist, trying to see all the sights in a single day."

But how does he reconcile that with the fact that it doesn't go to PS1?

Phil, there is no L, but I'd of thought you would get the BDVF which they refer to as the party trains.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care what no quiz says, I'm the freaking G train.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

In that case I'm the F, not because I identify with it particularly, but because it's the only train I ever ride. I've grown quite accustommed to it actually, since my days when I wasn't tethered to it and it was in common parlance referred to as "the slow boat to China."

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

JMZ, which is fitting, since i take it like 3-4 times a week.

Is Bakerloo a good one? I wanted a prettier color.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not so pleased about being the central line, don't know why, maybe because I've suffered the indignity of the monday morning rush hour on it.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 April 2004 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

although thankfully it is one of the ones that stays north of the river.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 April 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I do not like the bakerloo line. I took it once to see Billy Elliot. What does that mean?

Carey (Carey), Sunday, 18 April 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am happy with it--it encompasses north and south, and goes to Paddington and Elephant and Castle.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 18 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the only tube line (other than the waterloo and city) to be underground the whole way.

No Metropolitan or 1,2,3,9 people yet

only spot the latest trends; you set them. A
free spirit, you're not afraid to wander out to
Coney Island with your friends for a bit of
surrealistic fun.

I was all set for my historic J/Z ride when the signs at Essex St. informed me that those trains are not running over the WiIlliamsburg Bridge on the weekends. Left to my own devises, not having planned any alternatives, I fell back on the comfortable F train to C.I. trip.

My favorite view from an elevated subway line stop is Smith and 9th Street I think, but I will still give Sietsema's M rec a go--I hope it is better than that crap tapas restaurant I went to by virtue of one of his reviews though. What's your favorite elevated stop with the most pleasing views?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the A to Rockaway Beach, esp. when it goes over Jamaica Bay.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the 7 line on the elevated part through Queens and out to Flushing.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The 6 offers nice views of Castle Hill and the North Bronx.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a great view of Yankee Stadium (briefly) from the 4 the other day, but that was in transit.

The 7's on my list. I was supposed to take a trip while babysitting to Flushing Park, but circumstances prevented it.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be the BDF, if that still existed!! Biiig Duckin' Feel.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

now that i'm working in manhattan again, i really should just do a "lost weekend on the NYC subway" thing for a weekend.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to get lost with Ray Milland. Third Avenue El
