Most lurkers are more intelligent than you: discuss

And, by defintion, more intelligent then I (since I've been making posts).

Furthermore, when we log off our computers, all the lurkers, like teddy bears left in a child's bedroom, come alive and have a picnic ... If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise: For every lurker that ever there was will gather there for certain because today's the day the lurkers have their picnic.

So, are you forum or against 'em?

Bubba, Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they those women in the Dove advert? If so, forum.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

what's that quote about nobody knowing that you're an idiot til you open your mouth and confirm it? perhaps this is why lurkers are in a stronger position..

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting question. I lurk on some boards but am extremely loquacious on this one. It has to do with knowledge and confidence perhaps.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

actually most *people* are more intelligent than i am.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I never lurk on any board. I'm a bigmouth.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

90% of the population consider themselves of above average intelligence.*fact*

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm of the opinion 99% are below average intelligence.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Lurkers are all wasting their time.

Plunging Hen, Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

well that's to take a VERY liberal interpretation of average. or that 1% are much, much cleverer than the others.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Lurkers are curious and hungry for interesting writing. They are like readers.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, ipso. When I was at school in social ed you had to rate your own attractiveness. The best was "very attractive", the second was "quite attractive" and the bottom was "average". there's something wrong there...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe there were trying to stop all the negative-type kids choosing "fucking ugly".

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Distant lurkers (those who have access to the intenet, but are not even aware of the ilx board's existence) and super distant lurkers (those who are unaware of this board and do not even have a computer) are also wasting their time.

To ipsofacto: Being drunk at 11.45 in the morning (English time) is extremely unkempt, and sozzled loose cannons have been known to shash up the internet with unsafeness. Log off now and make yourself a mug of coffee, and pull your socks up.

Plunging Hen, Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it happens to be 8.47pm where I am right now, not to mention that I will get hopelessly drunk at whatever time of the day I see fit :)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Bottoms up, then. But don't say I didn't warn you when the liver hits the fan. I happen to be a fan of Nico.

Plunging Hen, Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Plunging Hen, are you aware of the ILX board Ask A Drunk?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just saying to ipsofacto that painting the town red and then blaming time zones is anti-civilisational.

To the music mole: Ask A Drunk is insania gone wrong. In fact, that whole board can speak to the hand, because my ears ain't listening.

Plunging Hen, Sunday, 18 April 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Since starting this thread, I have been busy behind the scenes, trading my posting post with a (known) lurker: consequently, this will be my very last post, and no doubt said lurker will make his debut post in due course, using a yet-to-be-announced handle (bubba wasn't part of the deal and so this name will come with me).

Well, the deal has been brokered, the exchange has been done - guiding me steadfastly unto reticence. My replacement will never be an authentic poster. He's like Tom Hanks at the end of the movie, "Splash", forever leaving behind his life on dry land to swim in the ocean with a mermaid: Tom's character knew he could only survive under water if he was physically touching the mermaid at all times. Intuitively, I know the only way this ex-lurker, my exchange-mate, will survive is if his posts are never ignored and he is constantly shown that he's cherished by the other members of the posting community.

I am now a lurker - to you, I am dead; a halo is lurking over my head; the tip of my praying hands is sharp ... When a broadband or a dialup connection leads a newbie in this direction, to post their comments on this forum, I hope a fellow poster will pour 'em a drink, on me; treat them affectionately. My own dialup's generic ring - once so shrill - is softening; each time a ping scanner pings, another lurker gets his wings!

Bubba, Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Rest assured, we will pour the newbie a drink on you, but it will not be an alcoholic one, if I have anything to do with it.

Plunging Hen, Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Why'd you write so much? It looks stupid.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Most people are more intelligent than me, ergo most lurkers are more intelligent than me. Besides, I like being thick. It gives you a sense of purpose.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Mime - a poster of brevity - knows the secret of how to look stupid without breaking sweat.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

This entire thread is a taradiddle of presumptuousness and ironic self-deprecation - it's a bit unpleasant, vastly uncool, and certainly won't make any so called lurkers want to up their involvement.

When you have FAP's, do lurkers lurk in the vicinity, looking on, but never coming over to the table where the posters are sitting?

navig star, Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

More importantly, do they send rounds of drinks over?

penelope_11, Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

we take turns, pretending to be lurkers.

if we're not feeling tired, we say weird things, to one another.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

lurking is nonexisting. when i lurked i did not exist. delurking means being attacked for disrupting the "community"--where you know more about posters than they know about you. just a theory. oh yeah, and i think they hide under the table at FAPs with tape recorders.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Mime, if presented with a choice of tactiturnity to general admiration or verbosity to general dismay, I shall always choose verbosity.

In that I resemble the polygamist, who staunchly believes the more his seed is propagated, the better, regardless of law, religion or common sense. No one asks the polygamist to populate the world with miniatures of himself. Indeed they shrink with horror at the very sight of dozens of lop-eared progeny swarming in the foreyard, like so many piglets in an alarmingly large litter.

Needless to say, I persist in writing a multitude of words, despite your sullen insistence on the contrary, and I cast defiance in your teeth; or your lips, if your mouth happens to be closed.

Aimless (Aimless), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think we might be surprised about how many famous people lurk on this board - obsessively totting up the amount of "classic or dud's", "search and destroys", "poo's", they have received; how much attention they're getting in general? Maddonna might know quite a bit about Ned Ragget, for instance, unbeknownst to Ned. Needy for Ned. Celebrities may be stalking the fans (not just theirs) - disempowered by the people taking an interest.

I think I just think the board needs my input at this stage.

Chris grass, Monday, 20 June 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

So how do you feel about the evolution of ILX? Has it gotten better, worse or the same? We need an *outsider's* view. ;-)))

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

how have you managed to resist posting for 5 years?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

ilx has hardly changed at all over they years. I moved house recently, and now I can hear church bells ringing on the hours as I scroll down the threads.

I've been able to resist posting because I wanted to hear what you all had to say first.

lurkering, Monday, 20 June 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

There's actually a lot of ILM threads that I never post on because, after long posts by Ned or Tim F. or djdee or whomever, I can't think of anything clever to add. I don't feel this way about any of the other boards, though, and gleefully sprinkle my thoughts everywhere.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure there's a contingent of lurkers who look in on us like we're the chattering proles -- you know, they find it valuable to look in on what we're saying, but they're above actually stooping to get involved. This is more of an ILM thing, I'd guess. I suppose I do have some firsthand evidence that a few famous/successful writers and/or academics look over the boards now and then, but they could well have other reasons for not actually talking.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

And there's no doubt that loads and loads of media people check in to see what we're talking about, particularly on the ILM side.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I suppose I do have some firsthand evidence that a few famous/successful writers and/or academics look over the boards now and then, but they could well have other reasons for not actually talking.
