It was based on the splatteriffic exploits of Ed Gein, right? (sorry, too lazy to click on link).

very very very loosely.

actually, in the new book by Stefan Jaworzyn, they claim that Tobe Hooper only 'sort of' heard the story of Ed Gein, hadn't been anything on an expert on the case (or even the particulars of the murders) - apparently its a composite of several incidents, with a whole lot of creative liberties thrown in. It's as good as fiction.

Yeah, Psycho was loosely inspired by Gein as well, which gives you an indication of just how loosely in both cases (I think basically Gein provided many filmmakers with a model of "serial killers drive like THIS.")

Exactly

"Serial killers drive like THIS..." is the greatest statement ever.

twelve years pass...

so my close friend's fiancee was in line for the T3xas Chainsaw house at Universal and she asks us "hey you all know what this is based on right", and I got started to reply that it was based on Ed Gein's IRL doings....

...when she said "Rob Zombie made that movie House of 1000 Corpses and that inspired TCM".

o_O. I forget how the younger generation thinks the Biel one is what started it all.

is there any better masterclass in scream-acting than Marilyn Burns (RIP) btw? holy God, she gets everything right, the shrieks, the mannerisms, the facial expressions, the hysterical laughing at the end.
