Silly. Perhaps racist.

I bet this product rules.

I wonder what it is, what it's meant to taste like.

I don't think it's racist. The soda's rub though, it's this weird grapefruity drink with a weird aftertaste.

Dan I., Monday, 19 April 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: weird.

Dan I., Monday, 19 April 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a whole thread of these at some point.

HAHA

Not saying it isn't, but I'd like to hear why it might be/is racist.

I've been thinking about this all morning.

I guess it really boils down to what it is that makes it funny.

Would it have been as "funny" if it was just a hollywood movie with the users subtitles?

Maybe, but I think the choice to use an indian movie was because (cue Cletus the slackjawed yokel) "them people over there speak all funny-like".

Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

That said I didn't find it as offensive as the "azn faggot" pic that was up in another thread.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been thinking a lot about what makes this funny also.

Maybe, but I think the choice to use an indian movie was because (cue Cletus the slackjawed yokel) "them people over there speak all funny-like".

I don't know about this. I can imagine it being just as funny were it German, Chinese, or any other language I don't understand.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

well yeah, i was talking specifically about th

e movie in question. I agree with you about the other languages too. I mean thats why I'm torn. It's not racist to think another language sounds confusing compared to your own but I guess it is if you think it sounds stupid compared to your own.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's where any racism would lie, I guess - if one were to laugh at the clips themselves independent of the subtitles.

I personally find it funny because it's that classic trick of recasting the serious performances of the actors into silly situations/dialogues.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally, this trick is done on Who's Line Is It Anyway? with films made by English speakers (the players overdub the voices on the spot) and it's funny in a similar way. Obviously that isn't racist.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and lets not forget bargearse from the late show that screened on the ABC in the 90's.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yeah how could I forget. :)
