What right now couldn't you live without?

I keep re-playing the two "Young Ones" series on DVD, even after watching them a jillion times over I feel comfort in viewing them and I would probably crumble into a million pieces without Rik and co.

So do you have a 'security blanket' at the moment?
(Or are you a hard-ass non-materialistic mutha?)

The 25 All-Time Greatest Bubblegum Classics or whatever it's called... sheesh, it's indispensible to my life and I don't even know what the name is. I don't even know what half the bands on it are called! But it keeps me sane and happy.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i love we. my absolute favorite is when they rerun entire 80s miniseries like lace or paper dolls or hollywood wives in one day-long orgy of schlock.

Also beer.

Wine Gums.

Yet, I have no wine gums, today. I had a whole packet yesterday. It only cost 65p. They were Sainsbury's Wine Gums!!

Somehow I made them last all the way from c.3pm to c.11pm. That seems an achievement now.

the blissfox, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Maynards make the best wine gums.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I know that!

I was going for ... costeffectiveness.

The odd thing, though, was that Sainsburys' ones were actually tasty. I had a packet of Sainsbury's Fruit Pastilles a couple of months back and they seemed, at times, so poor, such a pale shadow of the real Rowntrees thing, as barely to be worth eating. Yet, with the Wine Gums it was a different narrative.

the bluefox, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, I must try some of the Sainsbury's ones! I've never really liked the Haribo Wine Gums, apart from the ones that are supposed to be pear flavour.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want to raise your expectations too much about Sainsbury's. I'm not saying they were as good as Maynards, not by a longchalked cue.

I have come around to Haribo. I used to think they were cheap and nasty. Yet they are really not that cheap.

Last week I bought a Star Mix packet for a 20-minute train journey and could not help devouring it all too swiftly.

I have not, I think, had pearflavoured wine gums. Pear Drops are the only pearflavoured sweets I can recall eating; a different kettle of pears altogether.

the blissfox, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

for Americans who are as perplexed by "wine gums" as I am (what a horrible name!):

“At the turn of the century, confectioner Charles Maynard made sweet history when he first delighted candy lovers with his new and unique creation. Bursting with flavor and a delicate pleasure to chew, Maynards Wine Gums are simply a great candy. The pleasantly firm texture allows the full fruit flavors to linger - similar to the pleasurable experience of savoring a fine wine. Wine Gums seemed most appropriate a label. This classic label has been the hallmark for this product. Share the tradition: The Original Maynard Wine Gums made fresh for you to enjoy!”

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Star Mix always has at least one sweet in it that I don't like, though. I prefer just straightforward cola bottles, myself. Or gummi bears, when I can get someone to bring them from America for me.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna: Innocence Lost was on the WE channel last night!

okay, I totally watched that. GRIPPING

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am virgin on ashamed that I did not know that Maynard actually... *invented* the gums.

I think the wine idea might be a bit of a fantasy. I am really not sure that wine gums give me a sensation like what wine does, like.

'Firm texture' - OK, but fruit gums have a firmer texture. The question is, how firm can you go before you clog the teeth and become hard to chew?

Recent Star Mix highlights: 1) squashy hearts; 2) gummy bears - it's true; 3) twocoloured cola bottles; 4) rings of red and gold. I am worried that I can remember no more than this, and 2) and 3) were already on the thread.

Gummy bears are not US-only, unless Monkey means a different kind of (Gummi) bear.

the pinefox, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, but the good ones are. They've banned all the best food additives over here. I forget the names of the ones I really liked, but you could get them in huge, catering-sized bags at Costco, and they never go off because there's nothing natural in them.

Mmmm. Gummi.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I forget the names of the ones I really liked

I don't. Paddington & Rupert - those boys tasted extra good.

the blissfox, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

old school cola bottles with that weird sugar on them always used to make my face go red. I avoid them now.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going to go home and look in my sweets book about this invention of the winegum business and report back.

Perhaps I should bring that book to work. It is increasingly needed at the cutting edge of contemporary debates.

who knew there was so much to learn about wine gums?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I just watched the end of that Madonna movie on WE. The ad immediately afterward said, "Next on WE, watch John Cusack in Sixteen Candles."

("Followed by Frank Zappa in Head, and Ben Affleck in School Ties!")

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I have much, much to learn -- Stephen Dedalus

(But perhaps I am misquoting; I have seriously, or unseriously, disappointed myself by failing to find the page.)

the bluefox, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(In fact I can't imagine him inserting that comma and second 'much'. This isn't Strindberg.)

POLE DANCING CLASS????

More info needed immanently

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Shameless flirting, the vending machine on the 9th floor, the fact that I'm going to see the Lun4chicks in 5 days.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

POle dancing class = way better than boring gym. You get to clinb poles whilst listenign to loud music accompanied by screaming girl friends get buff, lose weight, sweat like a horse and slide up and down doing tricks. Then get drunk afterwards. It rocks. Fuck yoga. I am addicted . Ladies, I recommend it big time.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a pole in my pants just thinking about it. Wowza.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Black gums for me too.

I was right first time, about that line: he really does think: "Dublin. I have much, much to learn".

the bluefox, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the pinefox is right, sainsbury's wine gums are quite nice.

i had a few swedish fish last night as a winegum substitute. they stuck in my molars and made me wish i had the real thing.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

At least you had Swedish Fish. I am chewing on my thumbs. I miss Winegums.

good, but not really comparable to winegums.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

colleague with pick n mix bag just offered around a selection of :
fizzy fish, gummi bears ,jelly babies, and cola gums ( fizzy and flat) and those things shaped like kisses that taste of jam.

BUT NO DAMN WINE GUMS.

Fizzy fish are better than jelly babies but winegums rule.Cola gums and gummi bears are rank. The kisses things are ok though.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

what about the fried eggs??

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh. Those fried eggs ming. I ate a load of them when pissed a few weeks back (ok. I ate the entire bag of sweets in 10 minutes).

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, I'm not a big fan of eggs, and eating them is like eating a tiny version of the real thing.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

pink and white mice are decent. when i was small i used to think that i couldn't live without cinder block toffee, but a recent experience broke me of that illusion.
