Why do so few people I know get truely and utterly mega excited over rollercoasters and theme parks?

A good coaster is the best fun you can have with your clothes on (and maybe even more fun than that).

Pet hate of the moment: the misspelling of "truly". Nails down a blackboard.

Sorry.

the really excited ones are on the ground catching all the loose change.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I got sick from heat exhaustion once at Disney World and since then I've had negative associations with amusement parks. My best experience was sneaking around the one in Wildwood that was closed for the winter.

completely anal OTM re "truly"

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

problem is that there is usually only one or two good rollercoasters per park

ryan (ryan), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Try Magic Mountain - mega rides.

CRW (CRW), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. i once saw a show on the ten greatest rollercoasters in the world. if i was a billionare i think it would be a great idea to build copies of each of them in ONE place.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Rollercoasters are brilliant on so many levels!

don (don), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Cedar Point rocks .. the Raptor is the best thing ever constructed.. But the newer coasters make the older ones feel pretty tame.. So unless a park can add 10 new coasters every year, 80% of their rides are going to seem comparatively dull.

Probably not as big or exciting as the US ones, I imagine, but yes we do.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister and I convinced our mum that Space Mountain was an 'educational' ride. I was 11, my sister was 8. That was the day we learned EVERY swear word in our mother's vocabulary.

(yes Jess but they are SHIT)

well yeah i figured!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i am not a fan of rollercoasters by and large because i always vomit

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

People vomit when they drink, but thaat doesn't stop them drinking!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

This is not good for them

Cedar P*int is indeed awesome, just make sure your friend doesn't smoke a buttload of pot in your Cedar Resorts hotel room. Trust me on this.

some friends smoked weed on the Wonder Wheel.

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, so is that just the finesse way of saying they wanted to perform centrufigal force experiments using vomit?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't weed calm nausea?

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

taking acid on rollercoasters is the future!

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If you drink booze and smoke in the wrong order you can be suddenly quite nauseous. Been there!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

they went to Ruby's after the Wonder Wheel.

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Rock n Rollercoaster at Disney MGM is the fucking bomb - 0 to 60MPH in something like 2 seconds. Other good ones have been virtually every one I went on at California's Magic Mountain (man, I was like a kid in a candy store there) and the Montu at Florida's Busch Gardens. I love Space Mountain - and also The Matterhorn at Disneyland because it feels really unsafe.

CRW (CRW), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

texas cyclone at astroworld in houston is not bad

ryan (ryan), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The only amusement park I like was the old Disneyland of the mid 1970s, which still had the a quasi-World's Fair/corporate propaganda feel to it. Otherwise I find dead/abandoned/closed amusement parks to be more entertaining.

I don't care for rollercoasters at all except for Space Mountain and the movie Rollercoaster in which the climatic scene takes place during a Sparks show at Magic Mountain.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

-- strongo hulkington

Drinking alcohol, Jess. I spoke to a woman at the fun park just the other day - they were cleaning a ride cos someone had vomited on it. A man came with a bucket and mop - I wonder if they had a name for him - was he, eg, the Spew Monkey? She said 12 people had already vomited on that ride today.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hang on, Alton Towers at least has that mofo scary thing that dives into the hole in the ground. That's no wussy 'coaster at all! I refused to go on it when I was there (I went on the other one tho, where your legs dangle freely off the seat. It was all over in 60 secs after a 90 minute wait in the line, eff that for a joke).

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i double dare y'all to go on Millenium Force (back seat) and look backwards as you go over the first drop.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds like fun. I shall take your dare.

Does anyone else black out for about 1/2 second at the bottom of the first hill of Millenium Force? It's probably shortening my life somehow, but it's kinda cool .

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

OH MY GOD now I really want to get on that coaster!!!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never done that one! I want to.

Is The Beast at King's Island in Ohio still the longest roller coaster in the world, or just the longest wooden roller coaster? I like it a lot, but it's more of an endurance coaster than a sprint coaster.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the beast rules, dude.

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

don't talk about the beast! when i went to Cedar Pt. last year I also went to King's Island but, um, they were closed. we went in may and the park opened for the season in april so I just assumed they wouldn't shut down for a whole week for seemingly no reason. put a bit of a damper on our trip, and we did the only thing that would save it: drove right back to Cedar Pt.
The Son of the Beast is supposed to be great too, but you better not talk about it here if you've been on it.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

bastard Cobra in south africa was fun the first time... then it threw out my back on the second.
I'm sort of sad that i will now never let myself on another roller coaster. but on the other hand, i enjoy being able to walk

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i love rollercoasters. six flags is great but it's way too hot, the lines are too long and its always packed. the best time I had there was one of its last weekends, a rainy one in November, and there was hardly anyone there. we got to run around and ride the rides over and over.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

>>Cedar P*int is indeed awesome, just make sure your friend doesn't smoke a buttload of pot in your Cedar Resorts hotel room. <<

When you're on the clock at the Point, the Cedar Point cops (who are real cops) are your best friends ever. When you're off it, you wish they never existed. Except for the female ones that were in the dorm room next to mine. They ignored the beer runs.

As for the original post, visits to www.thrillnetwork.com, www.coasterbuzz.com, rec.roller-coaster on USENET, and even Westcoaster.net (even though I hate like, everyone there) would entertain.

Alan Conceicao, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

>>Is The Beast at King's Island in Ohio still the longest roller coaster in the world, or just the longest wooden roller coaster? I like it a lot, but it's more of an endurance coaster than a sprint coaster.<<

Currently, the two longest in the world reside in Japan. Steel Dragon 2000 (which briefly held the title of tallest coaster at 318 ft) runs at 8,166 ft in length. Diadrasaurus at Expoland runs around 7700 ft. Beast was also eclipsed by The Ultimate at England's Lightwater Valley back in the mid 90s, and that's around 7560ft (I think). Beast is around 7400, so its still the longest wood coaster in the world.

As for amusement parks and coasters in England, there are several very large rides (Nemesis and Air at Alton Towers, Pepsimax Pig One at Blackpool, Ultimate at Lightwater Valley, Thorpe's Nemesis Inferno), and even a couple record holders (Big One was the tallest coaster in the world for about a year, Hydro at Oakwood is the steepest and tallest flume, Ultimate was longest for about 7, and Colossus at Thorpe has more inversions than any coaster on earth). And, of course, Blackpool has their next big project slated for 2006 or 2007 that's gonna be the biggest and fastest attraction on the planet (so says the rumor mill).

The biggest difference is the attitude towards restraints and safety. Whereas in America, restraints are designed mainly to keep riders from being retards, the attitude towards lawsuits allows rides over the pond to operate with minimal or no restraints (eg, Blackpool's wooden Roller Coaster, which has no lap bars or seatbelts).

I love rollercoasters and thrill rides in general. Cedar Point and King's Island are legends in my world and I would really adore making the pilgrimage to Ohio to go to these parks and ride as many rides as I possibly can at these two parks. One of my favorite rides at this local theme park, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, is one that I think is called "Der Twister". It's a ride that twists you while it flips you upside down -- it's so low-tech compared to a mega rollercoaster ride, but it only takes a maximum of maybe fifteen minutes to go through the lines for it and the ride lasts at least three minutes, if not longer. OMG, funfunfun. I've been on the Superman Krypton Coaster numerous times and it's passable -- I'm imagining that it's probably not even remotely as exciting as a truly big coaster ride. The website says its height is 168 ft and it goes as fast as 70 mph, but I didn't feel like it was that high or that fast. Though I do fondly remember this one fun little corkscrew in the middle of the ride -- the one time I felt truly grateful that the ride was a floorless one.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I do adore The Rattler, though, which is this amazing wooden coaster that goes up higher than the Superman Krypton Coaster (180 ft) and is only a little bit slower (65 mph); you can really feel every single bump in the ride as you whoosh up and down. This was one of the park's original rides and when the park began operations, it was the tallest wooden coaster in the world. Another ride at the park that I adore is the Scream ride, which is one of those tower rides which shoots you straight up and drops you straight back down. It's 164 ft tall, which isn't really terribly tall, but it's a bit thrilling to look down as the ride goes up and down, up and down. I think that one's also an original ride to the park. (Note: The park didn't originally open as a Six Flags theme park, but became one about 2 - 3 years after it opened.)

Haven't been on a rollercoaster in a loooong time. I like the old rickety ones, think I would need to work my way up to something like that.

turnover is validating, profit is salivating (ledge), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

I vote that all the people who love rollercoasters congregate on one side of the room and the people who either hate them or don't particularly care one way or the other congregate on the opposite side of the room, so each group can more conveniently point and laugh at the other, while sharing a warm sense of cameraderie with their peers. Fun!

I haven't been to Cedar Point in at least ten years. Longer, because I lived away from Ohio from 2000-2007, and in summer 1999 I had a broken leg. So at least 11 years. And to think it used to be an annual event for me!

i used to love disneyworld AND disneyland, i went a few times and would win stuffed animals!

Surmounter, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

my brother and I did a coaster / theme park trip a few years back, including Cedar Point. We rode Millennium Force and holy fuck, I don't see where there is to go from there in coaster construction. It's so fast and steep that it actually felt weird to be on it, like "is this safe" fast. I mean I didn't feel sick, just really out of sorts afterward. If the line hadn't been an hour long we'd have ridden it again of course; instead we rode the Magnum like 10 times in a row which is 2/3 as big/fast (and still one of the best coasters around) but evidently isn't popular anymore b/c of its local competition.

Euler, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

I'd love to go back to Florida sometime and go to Universal, where evidently the Hulk coaster is terrific. Florida coasters are much better themed than elsewhere in the US.

Euler, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

Hulk was the most insane experience of my life. I've only done it once; I'm too old now. On my first and only ride, just out of high school, I lost control of my cold, right onto my date's blouse.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

I do worry that I'm too old now to enjoy coasters. Their scale is so huge now (compared to the past) that it's tough to work up the nerve.

Euler, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

The Hulk coaster is awesome. I love Universal's coasters in general though.
