tom brokaw retires, replaced by brian williams

Why am I revolted every time I watch Brian Williams, yet when I look him up I find that conservatives hate him because he's apparently such an obviously biased liberal? I don't see it. He's hardly Sam Donaldson.

To me, he doesn't seem to have a political leaning of any sort because he's so plastic.

MYFOXNY.COM - A fatal three-vehicle crash on the Bruckner Expressway near the Sheridan Expressway in the Bronx caused massive traffic delays for hours Friday. NBC News's Tom Brokaw and his wife, Meredith, were involved in the crash, but were not hurt.

Just before the crash, a spool of cable bounced along the far right lane, according to the Brokaws, who were traveling in the far left lane.

A green SUV traveling in the right lane tried to avoid the cable, the Brokaws said. The SUV veered into the middle lane, forcing a mail truck into the far left lane.

"As the mail truck careened into the Brokaw lane, Tom hit the brakes hard and skidded along the median. When the mail truck catapulted the median the Brokaw vehicle slid into it," according to a statement released by the Brokaws.

The postal truck crashed into a dividing barrier. The woman driving the SUV was thrown from her vehicle as it flipped over several times. She landed on the tracks under the Willis Avenue Bridge and was killed, officials said.

The news is chaotic. News readers give it a familiar face, a reassuring voice, and a certain amount of continuity. The other job of a news reader is to set the emotional tone to a given story so we can respond in kind. People like that. Consequently, we'll be stuck with news readers for all eternity, for reasons similar to why Vanna White became a highly paid celeb just by turning letters on Wheel of Fortune.

insofar as this dreadful job needs to exist Peter Jennings did the best with it, I thought -- and he did begin as reporter and bureau chief.

If Vanna White lied about anything in any context, would we demand her head?

The name of the newscast is still "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams." I tuned in tonight just to watch Lester do his thang. He was bland and great as usual. He mentioned at the beginning that he was "sitting in for Brian," which made me wonder about his relationship with Williams and whether or not he has privately expressed sympathy for his plight. After a few minutes I realized I was supporting the network by watching so I turned to CBS, where the (recently?) grey-maned Scott Pelley was doing a fine job.
