the gigantic woodframe kitchen window just collapsed backwards onto the deck.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what's a guy do in a situation like that?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

you got a landlord?

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

put a cardy on. ring a window repair dude.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i am going to talk to my landlords right now, but they are very slothlike and incompetent. also it's about to storm.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

plastic and duct tape.

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

wood panels, hammer and nails? If there's a storm brewin'

jel -- (jel), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also everything else in my life seems to be going wrong.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also i have heartburn.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeeps! Stence has identified the immediate need.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the imploding window metaphor is very filmic.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i am going to go quietly have an anxiety attack in the corner.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, this happened to me, the first thing is to call the landlord, no matter how sloth-like or incompetent. At the latest, they'll do like this one of mine did and cover up the window with something. Cardboard, maybe.

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

get a hold of yourself, man.

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

plastic and duct tape.

It is seriously ridiculous how many problems can be solved by this simple equation.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha! actually the window is just the icing on the cake, i could handle that alone well enough.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it's also very dark and pre-stormy outside and thus contributing to my feeling that the world is about to end.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

*many good thoughts for Mr. Slocki* But I'd suggest getting away from the computer at least, and trying to fix what you can this second -- and besides the landlord, see if a friend can stop by to help too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks ned! things should be taking care of themselves now i hope.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

not literally of course.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the landlord came and was freaked out.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that mean that the landlord is going to start a thread too?

lisafrank! (deangulberry), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you show your landlord the thread about Gear!'s couch?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you give us your landlord's gender so while we tease you, we don't have to keep saying "your landlord"?

lisafrank! (deangulberry), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Use an X-Acto knife, if necessary.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Go to the pub and ask people to buy you drinks whilst you relate your tale of woe. Get steaming then you won't care about the cold window.

( First Aider training) Clear any broken glass up first though or you might cut yourself when you walk in pissed later ( First Aider training)

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

this is actually the second time this has happened. once in college a gigantic window tore itself free from the front of my third-story walk-up and plummeted to the ground, shattering all over the street! if there was anybody down there they would have totally DIED!!! and i was pretty high and then the cops came and cut to five minutes later, i'm sweeping up the street in my housecoat.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps you have mysterious as yet-untapped telekinetic powers? And should strike a deal with local glaziers to drum up business for them>. In fact, maybe see if you can find a glazier in the pub and get him to buy you drinks in return for you creating future business by ' thinking' out windows in your locality, necessitating their speedy repair at a tidy profit for both of you

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I've found glass repairmen to be the nicest lot around, much better than locksmith highway robbers. Passing a six pack to your building's super at the right time will improve your living situtation immensely. Bypass the landlord as much as possible. One time I bought a new refrigerator and took the cost of my next month's rent and the landlord barely even quibbled. They just don't want to do the work.

sexyDancer, Monday, 19 April 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i was walking in hammersmith the other day and almost got clocked by an enormous old heavy window/window-frame assemblage that smashed into the sidewalk in front of me. everyone on the street looked up and around fearfully as if this were the first drop in what would be a hail of falling windows///@@

Every single post on this thread should (individually) be in a fortune cookie.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"plastic and duct tape" would make a great one.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't overlook the afterdinner pleasure of "some orphans tried to give me the hotfoot the other day"!

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If I got "i predict sliding glass doors by june" in a fortune cookie I'd be very confused.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's so definite! So firm!

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It just has that ring of surreality to me. "I predict.... glass sliding doors!".

Its a bit like "I predict... green waistcoats and bannana daquiris by the Winter Solstice".

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Except that sometime by June, you'd see glass sliding doors, and you'd think, "Well damn, cookies be truthtellin."

one year passes...
I once kicked a fan out of a second-story window, but I've never had a window just up and fall out of a house like that.

When I was a kid, I once slammed a window so hard that it shattered. It was real weird and scary having to sleep next to that billowing garbage bag for a week.

oh man.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, and I thought Bob Dylan treated his fans badly!

When I was a kid, I was rollerskating in the house and slammed into our patio doors. SMASH!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

All our windows are falling out. The rot.

this is an amazing s1ocki thread. seriously.

What was that Verhoeven movie where someone's death by a falling sheet of glass is eerily foreshadowed? The Fifth Man? Was it even Verhoeven?

Fourth Man, The

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Saturday, 11 March 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

i don't know why they couldn't have gotten joseph cotten for that sequel. much prefer the fifth man...at least that had a kind of generic integrity.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 11 March 2006 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Our upstairs neighbours lost their window a week ago. It toppled out, frame and all, and landed in a bush next to our patio doors. Our upstairs neighbours taped some cardboard over the hole to keep the wind out.

And the window itself? It still lies, in two or three jagged pieces, in our bush.

People are astonishing, don't you think?
