need it be pointed out (again) that the Patriot Act has absolutely nothing to do with preventing terrorism? and everything to do with the "power to snoop on and limit the freedom of individual Americans."

Couldn't really get away with calling it the 'Freedom Act,' could they?

If it's nothing to do with freedom, it's called 'Freedom' something. If it restricts freedom, it's prefixed with 'Patriot'. Does your government really think people are so dumb they won't see through that?

I propose a closed circuit camera in every US public toilet, to make sure all 'terrorist monsters' wash their hands.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

it's clever innit. by going along w/ the party line and allowing the restrictions, you are given 'patriot' status. what a service to your country *sniff* god bless.

Furthermore, I propose fitting all condoms with tiny tiny cameras to ensure the spunk does not contain scissor-wielding Terrorist Sperm. They shall be called Homeland Condoms.

I say we add more colors to the Terrorist Security Alert. Maybe a Code Fuschia or Code Mauve? The fear-instilled general public can then accessorize their outfits to match. Also, valium added to the U.S. water supply.

Das Homeland!

Can I just say that, despite the heinous stupidity and downright offensiveness of said act, I think the fact that it stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools to Intecept and Obstruct Terrorism is just brilliant.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

iter8 writes " The Stargate SG-1 Information Archive is reporting that the Feds filed charges against Adam McGaughey, creator of SG1Archive.com. The website is a fan site for the television show Stargate SG-1. The charges allege that Adam used the website to engage in Criminal Copyright Infringement and Trafficking in Counterfeit Services. Two interesting things about the charges are that they were apparently set in motion by a complaint by our friends at the MPAA and the FBI invoked a provision of the USA Patriot Act to obtain financial records from his ISP. Is copyright infringment now a terrorist act?"

is it more correct to say it "terrorists cringe in fear sarcastically" or the way it is here?

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't vote for anyone for voted for or renewed the Patriot Act. I guess it's a litmus test for me.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 20:28 (six years ago)

is sanders the only remaining candidate who's voted no every time?

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 21:45 (six years ago)

yup.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 21:56 (six years ago)

tough litmus test

Last week, the Democratic leadership put an extension of the Patriot Act into a “continuing resolution” that averted a government shutdown. More than 95 percent of the Democrats in the House went along with it by voting for the resolution. Both co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Reps. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., and Mark Pocan, D-Wis., voted yes. So did all 11 of the CPC’s vice chairs.

Barbara Lee and Maxine Waters voting for it kinda stuns me

Nadler (my rep) less so

i hate the patriot act obv but recognize that legislators were put in a conundrum when it became attached to averting a government shutdown

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 22:24 (six years ago)

I know about the attachment. Still spineless to hand it over to the Trump regime without even a peep.
