nice places to drink in london

this is the thread where you describe the nicest drinking places you've been to in london.

rules: it can be a pub, bar, and maybe club, as long as the main purpose of the place is drinking (as opposed to a restaurant/gig venue - unless there is a seperate bar area to have a drink at), and is a public-ish place i.e. not your house (unless you live in a pub), a bar at work/uni (unless it's open to public) etc.

change the cheese (pubs in london)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Best and worst pubs you've ever been to

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Freud
King an Queen Foley St
Milk and Honey Poland St

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i second milk and honey. i'm going to the nyc branch tonight!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry matt

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed and I will never agree on anything

Freud is a horrible place (if it's the one at the top of Covent gardem, undernetah the chandlers and art gallery) It's a ponce's boudoir.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I recommend the Gin Gin Mule. And one of their sours (new your sour I think), the one topped off with claret, is one of the best cocktails I have ever tasted.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Cabbage is being eaten by a caricature of himself.

Freud's do very nice and cheap lunches too, as I was surprised to discover a couple of Saturday's ago.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Freud is entertaining as it's always 1992 inside.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been there a couple of times and I really really disliked it. crap barstaff and overpriced beer, not to mention the huge number of challenging haircuts.

I do have to admit that the king and queen did look a decent boozer when we walked past it the other day

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

McDonalds. Nice cup of coca cola.

What?

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Maaaaaaan!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

King and queen is fine indeed. Adnams and guests on tap, well kept, wide range of whiskies and whiskeys and vodkas.

Freuds is not for drinking beer in.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and I'm not the world's biggest cocktail fan (apart from when I'm playing mad scientist)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Cocktails rot my wallet.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the foundry, at old st, a lot recently

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Intrepid Fox

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The Eclipse, Lower Clapton.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

starry mcdonald's don't count cos the primary thing to do there is eat :) (someone's gonna say starbucks in a bit though) haha but i mean yeah, alcoholic drinks - be it lager, bitter, shandy, turbo shandy, wine, spirit, cocktails, shooters, things.

basically, somewhere when you really want to have a(n alcoholic) drink, you'd most like to go, and i'm more interested in the "why" i think, that you like it so. i shouldn't really have restricted it to london but i live here and i'm selfish :) actually talk about whereever!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lamb, Lamb's Condiut Street
The Grapes, Limehouse
The two by the river in Wapping
The George, Borough (when tourists are around)

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

G. we'll have to take you to the Lord Clyde in Borough, it's a cracker

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Woodman, Battersea High Street. Really good food served there, decent beer, nice atmosphere. Been given a shot in the arm by that simplest way to refurb a pub - get a landlord who gives a ashit and understands drinkers, pubs and drink. He's just improved the range of things offered, good a damn good chef in, got a decent quiz going with for cash prizes and renewed the sky sub.

The Blackhorse in Archway is a really good Celtic pub - not too full (unlike the 12 Pins or O'Rafferty's) and they give you free chips at half-time.

I also like the Mitre still, and especially the toasties.

x-post Cabbage OTM.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant when tourists AREN'T around. I feel silly now.

I love Borough market, it's great for middle class spotting.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

THE MONTAGUE ARMS NEW CROSS ROAD LONDON ITS GOT SKELETONS AND DEAR HEADS AND A HORSE AND CART AND BOARD GAMES AND SHIT AND ITS RUN BY NORTHERNERS

scg, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

despite not going there for ages, I still think the Village in Walthamstow is a good boozer, I just wish it was easier to get a seat somedays (ie when the quiz is on and friday/saturday nights)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Montagu Arms? That reminds me. Time for a SE London Fap I reckons...

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Me and my SO are planning a season of tippling in Hotel Bars. Tonight: the Strand Palace Hotel Mask Bar, I think.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hotel bar hopping can be great fun. Just avoid the London Pub.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Was the Village the one we went to before the dogtrack? That was pretty cool.

The two side rooms at the George are cool, the bit in the middle where the bar is less so. Stevem and Rob B and myself were in there a week or so back - bit lacking in atmosphere I thought.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the one before the dogs was the rose and crown, and weirdly that was the first time we'd been in!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The George is OK, but no more. Royal Oak much nicer if you're around Borough.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and I'm not the world's biggest cock.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

And surprisingly, the Southwark Tav can be tolerable when not rammed.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss the Dove, but perhaps it is shit now.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like The Whitehorse in Brixton.

I also like the Dragon Bar on Leonard St (Old Street) even though it's always too loud and too overcrowded on weekends.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the Strand Palace Hotel not awful, though? I remember having a swift pre-office-Christmas dinner half in the bar, and it was unpleasant - vaguely seedy. However maybe the seediness should be encouraged.

I enjoy the Victoria Stakes at the Crouch End/Muswell Hill/Ally Pally nexus, but it is sometimes full of awful, awful people.

clive (Clive), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"I miss the Dove, but perhaps it is shit now. "

The Broadway Market one? Looked in the other day and it seemed right as rain.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i can vouchsafe that the montague arms new cross is wicked

Barnaby (Barnaby), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF was with all this Worst Pub In London Stuffed Zebra bollocks last year then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The Broadway Market one? Looked in the other day and it seemed right as rain.

Ah good. Such a nice place to spend a Sunday.
