So what's up with the commie t-shirts lately?

I've seen four people today wearing simple t-shirts with the hammer and sickle, and it's been very hard to keep from screaming in these people's faces.

I remember they were cool in 1991.

These have been all over the place in the UK for quite some time - I once bought a red zipup top from Next (ie big capitalist mainstream chain store) without noticing it had a hammer and sickle on one arm.

I mean, if they want to celebrate communism (and of course, they don't) at least do it with a picture of Marx or Luxemburg or Gorki.

call me a sympathizer if you will, but i believe in the hammer and sickle and all that it stands for. and it looks fukkin kyool.

CCCP Hockey Jerseys would be cool on a rapper.

I might point out that there's a certain London Ilxer I could name with the Soviet National Anthem on his iPod(!)

I have also heard tell that the same ilXer with the Sov National Anthem (downloaded from a University Republican Party site where it was hosted in a weird listen to the EVIL kind of way) also had a shirt bought in that bastion of counter culutre, Carnaby Street. He also has an old Soviet flag on his wall at home, and was bought a Chinese commie cap for his birthday. What a loser.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the Soviet anthem? The Internationale?

andy, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Where Is The Love?"

It's the same tune as the one Putin has brought back. As long as Wales don't get their way, ye shall hear it in Euro 2004.

More here, including downloads. Be sure to check out the catchy lyrics.

Paul Robeson did a version of it which leaves a bit of a nasty taste with him praising the tenderness of Stalin the leader. I have that version too, obv.

Even better site - development of Russian anthems from 1918 to the present.

I own the above shirt and wear it occasionally. I know it's probably in bad taste but so obscure I won't get hassled too much.

Unlike my "Let's Roll" shirt, which gets heavy praise in your better truck stops...

andy, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I'll just let that cryptically remain...

andy, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I have to say they're at least more aesthetically pleasing than the oil-stained tank tops with the words "Don't Tread On Me" emblazoned over a faded American flag graphic (often wrapping obscenely around a fat mid-western gut) which I get to witness walking around town each day.

Sp lit, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got that shirt too Andy! A shit ton of 'em, in fact! Thems is only like $7 for a 6-pack.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I was trying to figure out why a Malevich reference/shirt would get you hassled.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

But, yeah, the Soviets had some style. Suprematism, Constructivism, Rodchenko, Malevich, etc.

I wouldn't wear a hammer and sickle shirt, but I'd hang a Battleship Potemkin poster up if I ever found one cheap.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian took Twist to an exhibition of paintings by that very artist.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)
