Here, here.

Camtron (Cameron), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My boss is really getting on my bristols this weather - making me justify myself and doubting me at every turn. I've been accepting this with a smile but it's come to a fucking head today - as soon as I explain that I am right she turns her back on me - conversation closed. Cow. Today my face is tripping me cause of it, I've been muttering under my furrowed brow and slamming things and now she's being as nice as pie! GRRRRRRR

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Be nice back - people cannot get (openly) angry with you if you are grinning at them...

I think my co-worked is having some sort of mental breakdown, she phoned the boss at home last night to say she wants to go part time then didn't show up today. She just phoned me and started talking about her life plans.....

smee (smee), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That whole "kill 'em with kindness" method is the most worthless fucking passive-aggressive way of dealing with shit ever.

i totally agree.

i'd so much rather have someone yell at me than be coldly "nice." let's have it... be honest that you're a hateful prick.

it was jody that killed the beast (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Killing someone with kindness is a decent approach because it can be very annoying for whoever is giving you grief, but I still much prefer the DIY approach of killing someone with my bare hands.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to buy a bat and name it Kindness.

Dan (Is That Still Passive-Aggressive?) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Killing with kindness only works in television commercials for the Latter-Day Saints.

Pleasant (and in "Walking Tall") Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Woah, if Mormon commercials featured the bludgeoning of the unworthy, I would have signed up years ago.

Dan (Eye For An Eye) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, guys, it worked on my old roommate. She used to yell at me because open displays of anger made me cry and promise to do better and I got tired of that, so instead I froze her out -- she didn't last two weeks and I was never a bit rude.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

killing with kindness usually works for me, especially in situations where the person expects you to get all confrontational.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Surely it's a popular strategy in your neck of the woods, Pleasant P.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

what is "killing with kindness" supposed to accomplish? i still think the person doing it is behaving like an asshole.

it was jody that killed the beast (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:49 (twenty years ago)

"Killing with kindness" makes the person being a dick to you look like even more of a dick, especially to themselves.

Dan (Yay Mental Scarring) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

It kind of works in customer service, only once you put the customer on hold to ask a manager something all that pent-up rage comes out and then it's all "ARGH BLAGH I NEED SOME HELP WITH THIS HORRIBLE PERSON RHARGH" and that's not really good.

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 23:03 (twenty years ago)

I was perfectly courteous and didn't slam doors and responded in a friendly manner to anything I was asked directly, but I didn't volunteer one bit of information or extra conversation -- the backstory is that she had told me not to bother trying to be friendly since she felt it was just condescending, so I did exactly as she asked and treated her like a stranger who happened to share the apartment. I think it took 10 days?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I can go without amplifying dickheadedness in the world.

And some of these responses assume that one never gets angry at someone they do like.

What, being p/a? Or whacking people with baseball bats?

I'm not venting anything very well today.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

what is "killing with kindness" supposed to accomplish? i still think the person doing it is behaving like an asshole.

what dan said. also it can be a really effective way of defusing a situation and actually dealing with the problem (instead of having to deal with angry emotionalification)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I saw an episode of COPS the other night where a guy was threatening suicide by sticking a razor blade in and out of his mouth. The cops followed him around, sweet-talking to him, with no effect.

Then a cop came around the corner and BAM, hit the dude with a flashlight and the blade fell to the ground. It was pretty clear which method was more effective.

When I think of killing with kindness, I think of these Betty White type ladies smiling and making excuses and "defusing situations" by saying, Oh that Bert is such a bear sometimes, and then spending most of their private spare time sneaking sips of Southern Comfort in the laundry room.

killing with knives > killing with kindness

except for the whole going to jail and possibly being executed thing, of course.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 02:04 (twenty years ago)

killing with kindness(not to be confused with the "cold shoulder") works *wonders* in customer situations but only with people you don't care about+who deserve it, as it's not really a problem solving technique as PP pointed out. It is a great way to save your dignity without being the one who loses it and gets fired; calmly turning some type-a nutjob into a shamed and/or sputtering pile of goo is sometimes the outlet that keeps you from having to take nips of southern comfort or whatever. Doing it to anyone close or even co-workers is just creepy, they should be made aware that the situation needs to change if it gets to that point.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 03:59 (twenty years ago)

No, it's true, my tack with the roommate isn't properly "killing with kindness" but the interesting thing was that my resolve to give only so far actually made it MUCH easier to be patient and courteous in our limited exchanges.

Bristol City -> Titty.

I've never heard anyone outside of 1970s TV say it, apart from Rumpy Pumpkin.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

and the weather part?

six months pass...

i have been rude to so many innocent people over the phone this week because there have been endless holdups in getting my prescription sorted out and i don't have time to calm down between phone calls

example (crüt), Thursday, 18 December 2014 20:05 (eleven years ago)

it makes me feel like an awful person, like an angry white male whining to a person who is just doing their job, but it's so frustrating to have your health and life in the hands of people who keep fucking up constantly in urgent situations

example (crüt), Thursday, 18 December 2014 20:14 (eleven years ago)

It sounds terrifying tbh. Being an advocate for your own health is a completely unfair demand when you are in pain/sick/not focused on advocacy while you're suffering.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 18 December 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

I believe crüt and I deal with precisely the same company. I have been equally rude, cursing the "patient care advocate" (phone drone) once or twice over the last two years.

This is not my job, I have a disease. My patience is not unlimited.

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 December 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

ie up to 20 phone calls in one week to get one prescription shipped

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 December 2014 20:34 (eleven years ago)

my gf has been dealing with the same thing this month. prescription not arriving when she goes to pick it up, they say it will take 2 weeks to get it in stock, a dozen+ phone calls to pharmacies all over the city, trying to get the prescription filled. it's maddening.

ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Karl Malone), Thursday, 18 December 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)
