can you imagine how foul it must taste, though? it's made with chartreuse and blue curacao and kaluha and suchlike.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

A real Pousse Cafe is hard to find (most bartenders don't have the time to apply the layers) and they taste vile.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like a drink you could use to make your house look more swish. I would drink one right now though, just to see where it took me.

Isn't that Pousse Cafe a Bond drink? I seem to remember that from a lecherous high school English teacher of mine.

|OBEY|EYE|BO| (deangulberry), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmmm love the fridge ice in that woo-woo. (i swear i've said that before)

Aaron A., Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I just wanted to confirm that yes, the pousse cafe tastes fucking awful. It is certainly WOW to look at, though.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'm meant to be middle-aged, divorced, and flirting with cabana boy on a beach somewhere as i swig my 4th mai tai of the afternoon.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I don't think I'd wanna drink any of these, but I'm really enjoying looking at the pictures of them.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Chi chis are better than Mai Tais, aren't they?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never had a chi chi. hmm.

the one on the left is a poorly rendered photo of a "surfer on acid", on top of which my bartender friend gladly topped with bacardi 151 and then lit on fire. needless to say, i don't remember a lot of that evening.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, lauren. so many nights of five years ago were spent drinking woo-woos (in shooter form, natch). if you ever want to go out and drink stoopid cocktails somewhere, i am totally ready, willing, and able.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i just finished saying a little prayer for the apprently no-more "brown drink" at welcome to the johnson's ... i can't say for sure if this is accurate (google searches return nothing), but i recall it comprising: (1) half-pint guinness, (1) shot raspberry vodka, and (1) splash of dr. pepper ... GORGEOUS

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

i am saying a little prayer right now that the $5 pints of vodka and iced tea are still around.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

oh man - you are summoning the summer with this talk

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

aw, I love welcome to johnson's. My NYC summer memories are filled with pink lemonade margaritas at the Sidewalk.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Recently Espresso Martinis managed to display the mighty Mojito from the top of my affections.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

You realize that sounds horrendous.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:03 (twenty years ago)

I was on a long bike ride on Sunday, as it was sunny and nice, and I was reminded of the greatness of beer in the summertime, after outdoor activity, especially. I said to my friend, who was riding beside me, "Yeah, I'm totally NOT giving up beer, holy crap, what was I even thinking." And he said, "Yeah, why would you do that?" I don't really know why I would do that. I think it had to do with wearing bathing suits, but I would rather just exercise more. Cocktails have their place though, I understand, but still: beer, mmm. So: I never thought I'd say it, as I drink good beer, for the most part, and prefer it untarnished, uncocktailized, but: I want that Guiness + raspberry vodka "cocktail" SO MUCH.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:32 (twenty years ago)

i would normally never drink something like an 'espresso martini' in a million years, but i had one the other week at teddy's in williamsburg and it was great. just like an iced espresso but with a little kick--not too sweet or syrupy. it was very heavy on vodka. also, the bartender refused to charge me for it and i ended up paying something like $5 for three drinks.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:33 (twenty years ago)

cocktails in this town are a joke :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 03:07 (twenty years ago)

There is just something so tasty about a free drink.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Maybe that's why I drink beer?
They don't even know what to do if you ask them for something that isn't, like, gin and tonic. gar. Where to get a good classic martini, that's what I want to know.
xpost to S

Yeah, I would have no problem with joke cocktails if they were FREE. mmm, free.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 03:21 (twenty years ago)

look! it's a mind eraser!

Where is Jeff? In Greensboring NC we used to drink these to take away the pain. It is important to have a full sized straw; I've drunk them with stirrer-straws and it is not effective and is even painful.

I'm going to try to guess what's in the pousse:

(top to bottom)

bourbon
blue curacao
white creme de cocao
dark creme de cocao
midori
campari

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Well shoot. It seems that there is not a standardized recipe and you can layer all sorts of different things.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, pousse cafe is a style and not a drink -- technically speaking, a B-52 is a pousse cafe.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 06:29 (twenty years ago)

A blossomtini from Ballans on Old Compton Street. Should be wrong, but in actual fact is a swimming pool sized martini glass full of a Barbie-pink liquid that tastes like Turkish Delight.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 08:07 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like the best thing ever. WHEN OH WHEN IS LENT OVER?!?!?

Tweed on Tweed (kate), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 08:47 (twenty years ago)

bourbon
blue curacao
white creme de cocao
dark creme de cocao
midori
campari

definitely not campari or bourbon, they'll all have to be quite thick gloopy liquers for the specific gravity of each to hold the other. i have no idea what the red one is - maybe some kind of grenadine concoction and the brown one on the top would be tia maria or kahlua or something. talking of kahlua i could drink a large bucket of white russian right now. probably not a good sign as it's only 11.30am, but it's got milk and coffee in it, so i'd just view it as a latte with benefits.

O god that sounds revolting.

Has anyone tried to make a layered drink before? It's hard.

Abbott, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

i recently had a "champagne bramble" which was something like champagne, blackberry liqueuer and lemon - it arrives layered and is delicious

is a blackberry liqueuer one of those hipflasks that lets you drink remotely whilst you're away from the bar?
