Do people who are broke and married or in other long-term relationships worry about their partner getting sick of it all and running off with someone richer?

I think this might end up being one of my main motivations for ever trying to go for £££. I'm not very good on that score otherwise. I guess it's quite insecure, but these things happen, right? Relative poverty can put a strain on a relationship. Maybe debt, more.

kids & property are the two main cited reasons for relationships failing i believe

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well that pretty much pegs the leaving partner as a short-sighted fuck and pretty much not worth it in the first place.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. Debt's a killer, life-sucking, satan's crotch-rot thing ofr two people isn't it? We'll always have Paris though, right?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and the lottery

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I worry about this, I hate being the poor person in a relationship. I don't think that indicates my sweetie is a worthless fuck, just that it is hard to be always subsidising someone else. I think people who assume that money doesn't matter and it will all sort itself out are extremely saintly or fooling themselves.

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll always have Paris though, right?

Assuming she comes to your truck-stop, sure.

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

We're both broke-ass, dirt-ass poor. Like the kinda broke the Geto Boys and old blues men sing about. We've found that there is a certain liberty in being totally poor - leads to more adventures, makes you appreciate / eat things you never would, etc. If one of us struck it rich suddenly (which is a longshot because both of our parents are also poor and we don't play Lotto), we'd use it to benefit both of us as a couple. Duh.

Aside from groceries, we split the cost of EVERYTHING anyway, and all couples who plan on staying together should. Money and kids break people apart, unless you have a good understanding of each other's wants / desires. We do. It's the one thing in life I'm sure about, and the one thing I'm thankful for beyond anything else. Having to live in an RV someday might suck, but being able to share it with my baby will make it suck enormously less. Ya know?

That said, if the bitch don't start makin' dinner soon (it's 10:48 pm here!), shit's gonna go down.

Women like money.

CRW (CRW), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

but men will kill for it.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

women kill for money too - don't you remember all those Tales From The Crypt comics??

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i was just volleying back at snark-man

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i won't kill for it but i'll give head for it

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

can we watch?

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I got so frustrated with my stingy boyfriend once (we were both poor students, but he was stingy) that I threw all the coins in my wallet (a lot) out of my apartment window at him on the pavement. He didn't realise I was annoyed, and thanked me afterwards.

. (...), Thursday, 22 April 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. i had one like that.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 22 April 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha. Did he not think it was an odd way for you to give him a present?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 April 2004 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't worry that my boy would run off with someone richer, but together we do seem to attract bad luck. Sometimes I worry that he might leave for someone else for an easier life. I am not overly worried about this though!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 April 2004 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Women like men who buy them expensive pointless stuff.

CRW (CRW), Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you're okay as long as you're great in the sack

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm OK as long as I don't get the sack.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

damn. i'm poor and a loser bum in bed (yes, you're right: Oulipian). whatever am i to do?

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Pursue a career in music journalism ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps...

then the chicks would dig me!

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly it doesn't work that way. unless your name is chris roberts.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Then it is time to change one's name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

is chris roberts a lady's man?

he's the one man in the world who perhaps likes Dexys Don't Stand Me down more than me...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw him once sitting at the bar in the Famous Cock, Islington. He may have been chatting up the barmaids. JtN pointed him out, the old fox.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Or was it the Hen & Chickens? I get confused.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i had a famous cock

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd get sick of it being hassled in the street eventually, believe me.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No. Not at all.

That said, debt & poverty can cause general unhappiness and stress that can in turn lead to relationship problems, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Last summer I spent a day with Chris Roberts at the Roxy Music "Avalon" reissue launch down at the Groucho. He attracted the ladies with no problems whatsoever. He does seem to have that elegantly wasted Norma Desmond thing about him.

(not actually Norma Desmond herself hanging around his neck, you understand, for that would repel ladies rather than attract them)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

But he is so short, Marcello. I just think Eddie Izzard minus the slap and heels.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sizeist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

all the time, dude.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think about things like this probably more than I should, but I know it's probably down to massive insecurity on my part.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife makes way more money than I do. Im not concerned about it, no one can give her the lovin like me.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never been with someone who makes more than me so i've really thought about it. (usually we make about the same. i ain't no money bags)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

In all seriousness though. There was a time when we really struggled while she was in grad school and making little money and we lived in boston. but we always got through it somehow. Its nice now because we have a decent sized combined income but also $15000 worth of Credit Card debt from the hard times as well as $45000 of student loans. But its a bit easier to pay the bills now. Plus our mortgage is laughable.
