Carlton Palmer - classic or dud?

Obviously he was crap for England, but that's because Turnip Head played him on the leftwing, for heaven's sake. Carlton palmer received an inordinate amount of Man Of The Match awards at Sheffield Wednesday between 1990 and 1994 - at one point it seemed as if he won it every other week. I therefore claim that Carlton was a good, nay, GREAT club footballer, and, arguably, the prototype for Patrick Vieira. I'm not saying he was better than Vieira, but he was a similar kind of player, and gets an unfair rep.

I'm going to get laughed at, I know it.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well you started it.

winterland, Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

He was great!

"They all laughed at Christopher Columbus
When he said he said the world was round"

Well Christopher Columbus was wrong and so are you.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Stockport sacked him around Christmas time didn't they?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually he does have one thing in common with Viera..his ungainliness....ourse with Viera that disguises real poise and balance....

i remember a southampton vs everton game on the tv (when palmer played for the saints) and he was absolutely brilliant. then, they had the viewers votes for man of the match, and he was not among the three most-voted-for players (despite him being head and shoulders above everyone on the pitch). palmer is effective, at club level, so he did not deserve to become a laughing stock (and people unwilling to admit his solidity!!!)

Classic, I watched him boss the midfield for Saints against Man U, yer man had a lot of composure. I seem sto recall a couple of decent england outings also.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Carlton Palmer = the 90s Emily Heskey?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Carlton could trap a bag of sand.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i hesitate to call him a GREAT club player though, but he deserved more praise. if he had never played for england, he would probably have been the chris marsden of his time (playing for his country perhaps elevated him to a status which was not compatible with his footballing skills[or lack of])

F****** L*** N*****

Classic, he is one of the breed of footballer that no matter where they are can be guaranteed to be wearing a tracksuit. I think there was a photo of him leaving a nightclub wearing his shell suit when he was at Leeds.

A mate who I was having this discussion with elsewhere has sent me the following;

'Carlton covers every blade of grass on the pitch... but then you have to if your first touch is that crap' Wolves manager Dave Jones on former England midfielder Carlton Palmer.

"I was watching some golf this morning and that was as good a swing as I have seen all day." - Strachan after watching a particularly ungainly Palmer sending-off.

"He isn't the best player in the world, but he can stop those that think they are." - Graham Taylor tries to justify his fascination with all things Palmer.

"Carlton Palmer can trap the ball further than I can kick it." - Ron
Atkinson(!), who actually liked him and signed him twice.

"If football were meant to be art, God wouldn't have invented Carlton
Palmer." - broadcaster Dominik Diamond.

"He's a winner." - Stockport's Mike Flynn on hearing of his new
manager's identity. For the record, Palmer's trophy haul currently stands at absolutely nothing.

He scored a cracking goal against Wimbledon the same day Tony Yeboah hit that cracker off the crossbar; I saw it on MoTD and though 'that's goal of the month!' then Yeboah scored.

x-post Dave Jonjes comment classic

Isn't this the Fresh Prince's nerdy cousin?

Who stole that from George Best - mind you he probably stole it off someone else in the first place

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I like his work in ELP.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I preferred Chris Powell in ELP

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Emerson Thome was better.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way he couldn't believe he'd been sacked as Stockport manager. He actually asid he was 'turning things around'.

As a player, he had a decent header on him, although his pin head didn't always guarantee accuracy.

He scored a cracking goal against Wimbledon the same day Tony Yeboah hit that cracker off the crossbar

I was at that game. Carlton dribbled the ball around aimlessly for a few seconds, with seemingly no idea what to do. His final option was to give it a whack from 30 yards, and it went flying in.
As a player, classic isn't quite the word, but he was very far from being a dud.

As a TV pundit, he's excellent, because he doesn't follow received wisdom. I reckon he could be the next Big Ron

Joe Kay (feethurt), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

he was the sort of player that clubs doomed to relegation would sign, and for this alone I kinda like him.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I never liked him.

the bluefox, Friday, 23 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

He was one of the people insisting that Ron Atkinson wasn't like, an actual racist in the news recently. He also said that he was perfectly fine with players shouting racist abuse at him to try and get him to get himself sent off, oddly.
