Yes.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

cool....i'm looking around for cheap hotels/hostels/apartments right now. do you know of any good places for that?

waxyjax (waxyjax), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Barcelona is loaded with cheap pensiones. Best to get a guide and a phrase book for the cheapest ones and ring round. They are very basic but you'll only be sleeping there so I wouldn't worry.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tempted to but not sure I can afford it though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

El Raval is the best place to look, it lies between the day venue and where the buses go to the night venue. Easy walk to both. Also worth looking in the Born, Barri Gotic/Cuitat Vella.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

cool! yes, i was concerned that i'd end up somewhere very far from the actual festival.

thanks a lot!

Anyone else going to this? I've never been to BarTHElona and I am very excited. As for places to stay, if there's a few of you I highly recommend getting an apartment. It works out WAY cheaper and you get a kitchen! Here's where I am:

Costing us each about 100 Euros for FOUR NIGHTS - nice!

There are some other great places that are very central here:

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 14 May 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

plane tickets too expensive. :(

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 14 May 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to go. Last year was SWEET (even though I wasn't allowed into the actual night shows).

giboyeux (skowly), Saturday, 14 May 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Not this year. I had a really bad time last year. Much better to go during the festival but not go to the festival now. The fringe stuff is as good musically and not over-busy.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

can you give a jejune traveller any tips / advice on where to stay, how to handle sonar, how much money will be required &c. ed? or anyone else for that matter.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Rent a flat, good to have somewhere to escape. Barcelonetta if you can as a lot of the good parties happen on the beaches to the east of there, plus there are some great restaurants on the back streets (avoid the ones on the prom). Kompakt had a great party there on the sunday after SONAR. 200 -300 euros gets you a place that that will sleep plenty of people for the length of the festival. A/C is a nice luxury if you can get it.

The festival especially during the day is incredibly cramped and busy, don't bank on getting into the lesser stages particularly the indoor ones unless you turn up way ahead of time. Luckily it's easy to get in and out of the venue and there are loads of good places to eat and drink to the west (in Exiample), the south (in the Raval) and on the other side of the Ramblas, in the Barri gotic and especially in the Born). See other Barcelona threads for eating recommendations. when I can get a map I'll add a few more from last year.

Prices seem to be going up all the time but you can still get a hearty meal with wine at lunchtime for well under 10 euros.

Talk to people find out where the parties are. There's normally a big event on the wednesday before it all starts. last year it was Miss kittin and Andy weatherall and a whole load of other people at somewhere whose name escapes me but suzy will remember. They'll be posters al over town.

The night venue is a pain in the arse to get to and from and plenty of SONAR visitors do clubs and bars in town rather than go there and vice versa. There's plenty of stuff to do in town. I must remember the address of the Casa Paco, great Bar on the edge of the Born which had some great small label music and cheap pint glasses of gin and tonic.

I'll try and remember some more.

I went to Sonar in BCN the time they had Aphex Twin, DJ Krush, and Bjork on the bill. It was pretty fucking fantastic and well-organised to boot.
