OF THE RINGS OF POWER AND THE THIRD AGE:

ELVES: Wonder what's going on over the ocean. This crafting deal is pretty sweet, though!
DWARVES: Yeah, seriously.
ANNATAR: Hi, elves! Wanna learn some cool stuff?
ELVES: Okay!
SAURON: They fell for it.
SEVEN DWARVES: Thanks for the rings! . . oooh, GOLD! MORE GOLD! MUST HAVE GOLD!
NINE MEN: Neat rings. . . Hey, didn't Mom die like six hundred years ago?
CELEBRIMBOR: Okay, how about we do three more and call it a wrap?
SAURON: How about I do one more and claim them ALL?
ELVES: AUGH!
SAURON: Bwa ha ha!
LAST ALLIANCE OF ELVES AND MEN: Push off.
SAURON: Make me.
ISILDUR: Whack.
SAURON: Ow.
ELROND: Hey, you got his ring. Let's ditch it.
ISILDUR: No.
ELROND: This sucks.
ISILDUR: Tell me about it. *dies*
GONDORIANS: *change calendar*
CIRDAN: Hi, wizards! You in the grey, catch!
SAURON: Okay, that's long enough. Movin' into Dol Guldur.
SARUMAN: It's not him. Also the ring's lost at sea.
RING: No I'm not.
THE WISE: Augh.
THE WEAK: Bad ring! Volcano for you!
RING: *melts*
SAURON: AUGH!
MORDOR: BOOM.
GONDORIANS: *change calendar*
ELROND, GALADRIEL: Road trip!
GANDALF: Hi Cirdan! Still got your ring!
CIRDAN: Cool. Let's go to Valinor!

So, and I've asked this question before, in LOTR, which one is supposed to be the Christ figure?
Frodo, who carries the sins of humanity through the stations of the cr/ er, ring.
or
Aragorn, who is the Returning King?

I need to know. Holla back, (214) 432-3493

Bilbo's John the Baptist?

Er, Gandalf actually gets resurrected!

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually there is no Christ figure. Tolkien wanted to create
a pagan legend for England.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Considering Tolkien said LOTR wasn't merely Christian in inspiration but also Catholic, I don't think so. (It is true the original roots of the legendarium were to create a 'mythology for England' but it is most certainly not the only element.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

So is it impossible to be a devout Catholic and write books
lacking Christ-figures? Doesn't seem plausible to me.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Tolkien also disavowed the idea that his books were allegorical in
any way.

"Thus Gandalf faced and suffered death; and came back or was sent back, as he says, with enhanced power. But though one may be in this reminded of the Gospels, it is not really the same thing at all. The Incarnation of God is an infinitely greater thing than anything I would dare to write. Here I am only concerned with Death as part of the nature, physical and spiritual, of Man, and with Hope without guarantees." - JRRT on Gandalf and God

So everyone is Jesus?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean you're not, Huck?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Son of Mann

Where's Numenor? You cannot do a mini-Silmarillion without the Numenor. I want Numenor.

otto, Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

when did you move to Texas, Huck?

hstencil, Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I see my folly after reading the thread right. Carry on, then.

otto, Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Texas. At least the Texas of my imagination. That might be a real phone number. I don't know. I'm sorry if it is.
