Who brough mullets back?

Fess up now. I just saw a cockfarmer at EMAP with one. He looked like a spazbian. Which fashion dickwads decreed that the 80s were cool and needed reviving?

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Erm, all of them?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

All this 80s revivalism better be over by the time Thatcher dies otherwise we're staring straight into the flaming gates of historical revisionist hell.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't quite have a mullet, but.......I am a mullet sympathiser.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a lot of indiecool is at heart a nostlagia 4 thatcher's britain...

Not with me it fecking isn't.

I want names. Who started the trend? I MUST KNOW SO THEY CAN DIE

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

But... but... but... the ironic Hoxton mullet has been a fixture for years now! Ever since about five years ago when every twat from David Beckham on down was sporting the Hoxton Fin so they wanted something to differentiate themselves from the rest of the population!

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm so so anti mullet.

there might be some information for you at www.mulletsgalore.com ...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mean that indie kids want a more definite enemy, an enemy that is oppressing them. I think it just seems that in thatcher's britain there was a far more definite enemy (the yuppy), there was the cold war, which gave a chilly brink of a nuclear winter feel to everything. it is the sadness of being beaten down the fuels indie cool...

i'm making most of this up as i go along, but i'm not sure i'm not right...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate mostly right I think, they got made into a sudden mass symbol of funny hair in the mid90s or so thanks to um Grand Royal for a start and of course eventually people decided to wear them FOR REALS cos people are all stupid mostly and the joke slowly wore off through exposure

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

what's wrong with them? Some look stupid, others look good. No big thing really is it?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Just let's not revive Tiger They were W E A K!

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

there's only one real answer to this:

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc000/c079/c07948kf176.jpg

(way back in 1996, this band wore awful mullets. everyone laughed at them and forgot about them. all now driving cabs. shame, good band.)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

gah! xpost

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to remember the first band I saw with totally non-ironic mullets. I can't remember their name. They were from Philly. They all thought they were Rod Stewart. They were vile. But they were not Tiger.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

weird telepathic link there...

NME readers ca. 1997 unite and take over...

Ronan a REAL ONE just looks idiotic. Variations on it can be fine.

fuck NME - I only read *cough* (wrote) Ripple:

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a mullet at the moment. It's not my fault! I'm growing out a bad hair cut!

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I now pronounce the word Mullée.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hey i think tiger are still pretty good! and also, at least they were pretty damn early in the mullet thing. some of the earliest, no? considering they are from high wycombe, that is pretty impressive to be so far ahead of the pack.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The amount of attention lavished upon Tiger rose exponentially because of the mullets.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

People in London are still sporting ironic mullets? I've been telling everyone up here that they're years out of date.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, as with so many things, the initial horror has filtered through to a more mainstream mullety look. Proper mullets are out of date, but hair is definitely more likely to be cut a bit longer at the back than it was a few years ago.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I might be working in the record store in URBAN OUTFITTERS this summer! I fear a mullet is uniform.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yay! i think i've managed to talk someone into chopping off his mullet!

this is such a good feeling.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

All this 80s revivalism better be over by the time Thatcher dies otherwise we're staring straight into the flaming gates of historical revisionist hell.

The Undead can't die

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's Ian I'm going to whump you! ;-)

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

N, the mullet is no longer ironic. That's the worst bit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this geezaesthetics?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was kind joking with the 'i' word. That's kind of what I was saying with the filtering through comment. A full blown mullet is arse though, yeah.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Once a haircut spills over into mainstream popstars (ie. Blue), it is no longer trendy/ironic/interesting. It's just Top Man/FHM/Heineken/footy-on-the-weekend normal.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

And it means the Hoxtonites have won. Hurrah! Where's Momus when you need him?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that's when it becomes more interesting... but still not interesting enough

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure theses could be written about most of our hair.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, now i'm fearing kate... he's got a haircut scheduled for next friday. so you've got a week to change his mind!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! arrrggghhhh... convince him to get his hair cut like James from Busted. That's what you should do. HEh heh.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the mullet never went away in some parts of the US of A, you know.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, no, that would be a BAD idea. Tell him to get a rubbish buzzcut or something so he changes from Potential Crush to Not A Crush At All.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

N. They are not ironic. They are serious. These hepcats think they're the coolest mofos on planet London. Cunts. They hurt my eyes, and fetishize an awful period of human existence.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

In some corners of America (can't speak for the UK, obviously), mullets never exactly went out of style.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I hadn't carried on with that word now. I KNOW. You can be ironic and serious at once though. No one has ever suggested that they have got their hair cut as some kind of joke.

I am just surprised that it is still trendies (or try hard trendies) who are wearing them - I thought it had filtered through to the extent that a mild mullet was a mainstream thing and that that the trendsetters had long since moved on to something else.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure they have and it's the mainstream that hurts my eyes. I wanted to know who was at the tope of the pyramid operation of shit.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the first one I saw was on a barmaid in the Lux bar in about 1999, but I wasn't exactly a Hoxton regular, so I'm sure others can predate that.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Why has no one mentioned the horror of the BICOLOURED MULLETT? Like, a bogstandard dark mullett with BLONDIE STREAK running through the middle? DIE DIE DIE.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

One of Busted had the blonde streak thing going on for a while. Catty's "boyfriend" not my "boyfriend" but I didn't find it that objectionable.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

And tails! Ye fucking gods.

I feel like walking around with scissors and threatening people that unless they get it cut, they will DIE.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, I think you need some counselling.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is so amusing me as i look across the partitition at kate's potential crush's mullet with a blonde streak...very funny.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And who says football doesn't promote violence? ;-)

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, x-post.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame Thatcher. And shite hairstyles. The fact that my mum's a hairdresser has nothing to with this.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and mullee' really pumps my nads

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't like the word 'mullet'. For some reason it really annoys me. I think the enduring 'ha ha - look at this website' mulletheaven stuff is part of it. I preferred things when it was just called a Chris Waddle cut.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Who on earth is Chris Waddle?

There are multiple names that I know for it... Hockey Hair, Ape Drape, etc.

the hooters?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, a month ago there was a dude in front of my office building in lower manhattan who was asking people to sign a petition ... AND HE HAD A MULLET!!

(i guess the mullet has returned to NYC ...)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the very first band i saw live was v capri at a blue light disco in the country town in which i grew up in the mid-80s. mullets and stretch denim galore and todd johnson's glory days. this will really only have comedic value for someone from western australia unfortunately.

gem (trisk), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid the first mullet was worn by David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, you just don't notice that's what it is because of the red dye.

Although the mullet has been in existance ever since, it was never called this until the Beastie Boys did the Mullet Head piece in Grand Royal in like 1994(?). Until then we just called it 'hockey hair'. You can basically blame Grand Royal for ironicising all aspects of the mullet and poodle rock, or at least giving shape/a name to something people were starting to do anyway.

Fashionwise there's more than a hint of the 'gay man fetishises opressor' vibe that brought us skinhead fashion shoots from photographers and stylists now in their 40s. Basically, anyone who beat you up for being queer in adolescence, their archetype becomes YOUR bitch/muse/whatever. In 1999 I met a designer called Jeremy Scott at a party - he'd been fetishising the look for two years and sold £50 metal-lite teeshirts at Colette, so it annoyed me until I found out he was from Kansas City, which made perfect sense.

Mullets as 'trendy' haircut started happening from about '97. I've called a fashion mullet a mulleé since about then.
