Pre-Made Sandwiches: Search and Destroy

Those new "Bella Italia" sandwiches in Marks and Sparks. Why is the bread stale on all of them? Is that some part of traditional Italian culture I've missed out on over the years?

Also: those stupidly expensive sandwiches you get in 24 hour garages with overtly poncey names like "A kettle of fish": C/D?

Boots still 0wn on this front anyway, even if everything's the tasteless Slimmer range at the moment over there. Chicken with no mayo? Why?

Oh man, my Uni sells these "chargrilled Italian vegetables and pesto in sundried tomato bread" sandwiches which are just to die for!

i really like the m&s avacado, mozarella and tomato one...just had one as a picnic lunch, and it was lovely!

I like M&S cheddar cheese Ploughmans.

Benjy's was really good back in the day. Always feels like a complete meal too.

Loblaws got some good ones in their Movenpick stands. Haven't dared tried the sushi yet thouh.

Prêt à Manger is great. The Marks n' Sparks in Paris always had good sandwiches, though it's gone now. Birley, here in SF has lovely pre-made sadwiches and the best, when I think about it, are those bars in Italy, where you can swoop in for a quick panino & beer. That's the stuff, right there.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Pret a manger sandwiches are poncey, I love O' Briens though, big thick tasty filling sangers.

Post-Made Sandwiches?
Post-In Note Sandwiches?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

controversially:

Greggs Xtra bites (in particular Chicken New Orleans) are brilliant and cheap...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Prêt avocado, pine nut and spinach wrap.

C J (C J), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

O'Briens manage to spoil their otherwise promising cheese and pickle sandwich by using the cheapest, nastiest grated cheddar available.

Surprisingly, the BHS cheese & pickle is tangy and delicious. It's not surprise that it's cheap, too. Their cheese savoury white one is quite foul however, tasting of lemon curd.

Pret is generally too gloopy, and vastly overpriced, though the egg on rye is good. Their wraps are an abomination.

At our work we have a sandwich man come round, and he's got a great line in Chinese chicken wraps. Num num.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like a bum wrap to me.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, wraps can fuck right off, full stop. Why would you want some cold, soggy pancake in place of a nice bit of bread? If they wrapped it all up, then I could see the value as a mess-saving measure for those whose lives just don't stop for lunch, but they don't. Stuff is always dropping out of them.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

subway now has low-carb wraps for their sandwiches. it seems to defeat the purpose of going there: fresh-baked bread. the veg are limited and not exactly in their prime, the cheese is plasticky, and i don't eat the meat but i'm sure it's horrible. why deprive yourself of the one thing that's done well?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

wraps are horribly democratised along with paninis and everything else.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

pret's ham and cheese baguette is a good size, not poncey at all and at a reasonable price of 2 pounds 60 pence.

also search the sandwiches/rolls of Wright's Bar (on houghton st, next to LSE)- fresh and tasty ingredients- around 1 pound 50 for a roll.

lid, Friday, 23 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Seconded to the Gregg's sandwiches, that chicken and mango mayo sarnie is brilliant, the bread is spot on and the lettuce always tastes fresh.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually astonished at 7-11 when I got a pre-wrapped smoke turkey on wheat berry bread that was more than passable!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I read that as pee-wrapped, so you can imagine my surprise.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

Props to the M&S NY Deli Pastrami, despite being nothing like a real NY Deli Pastrami sandwich.

I remember when it was being road-tested. 'Limited Edition!', like they're collectable.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

Just a warning against the newish Pret roast beef ciabatta thingy: sounds and looks amazing, but the bread is really dry and chewy. I ended up picking the meat out of the one I bought and just eating that.

nine months pass...

the christmas lunch pret sandwich didn't disappoint.

although that may be because i didn't have to pay for it. it still seems mad to pay more than £2 for a sandwich in terms of its filling value and cost of material.

M&S: avoid the chicken ones as they're a bit dry, but the "bizarre flavours" ones are good - spinach and brie with chutney made from Mandarin oranges, or whatever it is. And the smoked salmon/cream cheese one is good, and actually £2.

snoball, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

they taste ok. they are just overpriced. maybe your expectations in their tastefulness was elevated by their price which leads to disappointment

dunkin' donuts flatbread sandwiches: awful. (to put that in context, i would say dunkin' donuts croissant sandwiches: wonderful.)
