the engine's combustion chamber has a hemispheric shape, half of a full dome shape. that means it has a really low surface to volume ratio, which causes less heat to be lost when it makes contact with the chamber.

they were on a bunch of muscle cars but disappeared at the same time all of the big, fast american cars were getting severely downtuned at the start of the 70s. they're more expensive to make and a lot of trouble-- and the hemi idea is a bit out of date by now. the dodge hemi is all about identifying with those old, fast, big cars.
