No one remembers
Poor Roland Ratzenberger
Despite his GRATE name.

John Senna?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Air tonne.

Senna died on my 21st birthday. I associate finding out about it with being in John Rylands library, but I can't see how this could have been, as I'm sure I was studying hard.

What about Roland Ratzenberger?!

Senna was great though. I remember an interview where he said he'd never die on a racing track because God loved him. Loon. Drove like a nutter.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but what about Roland Ratzenberger?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked his shades and hat, but not so much his whiskers.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody would even mention Schumacher in passing if Senna had lived. The greatest, no question about it.

darren (darren), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ratzenberger has hardly had a mention, it's true. He was 34 and a real journeyman, though, and it's sad to say that had it only been him that died then there would never have been the same safety improvements made in the wake of Senna's death.

darren (darren), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hadn't schumacher already won a world title by the time senna had died?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

His first title was in the Benetton the same year Senna died, in a car widely suspected of breaching the rules but never picked up on.

Also.. no Senna death, no F1 break for David Coulthard, who filled the place at Wiliams cos everyone else had either just retired (Mansell, Prost) or was contracted elsewhere (Alesi, Berger etc)

RIP.

one month passes...

Got to see the documentary on the big screen yesterday and it was amazing. The footage from that sad weekend at Imola is heartbreaking. Can't recommend this enough; see it if you can.

I ended up seeing it a second time as I wanted to see it in a theater and it was still gripping - that first in-car track footage you see from Monaco is just stunning.

FWIW, I saw it with someone who had no knowledge of Formula 1/car racing and thought it was a terrific documentary even without that background. Go go go!

I'm glad this movie exists but I have to say I was a little underwhelmed by it, and I am a sometime F1 fan.
