Can you upgrade a laptop?

The same was as you'd upgrade a desktop, add memory, upgrade the processor etcetera? Because we've got an old (7 or 8 years) Toshiba sitting under the stairs from my dad's old job, but it's shite, no floppy drive, no CDR, no USB, Windows 95, and I really fancy the idea of sitting typing in the garden on days like today (I've been to the beach! Rar!).

you might be able to add more ram and possibly upgrade the hard drive, but i'm afraid you're stuck with the motherboard and the processor as they are.

Hmmm... I feared that might be the response. All I want to do with it really is type. It's got a USB port but wont register my USB key drive, so maybe if I can get Matt (my IT buddy) to upgrade the hard disk and processor and install XP...

what are the current specs?

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 24 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck knows. I'll have a look.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

the only reason i ask is because there are basic requirements for win xp.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 24 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye, and this porbably wont meet 'em.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

How do I find out what the spec is on Windows 95?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Found it.

Windows 95
4.00.950 B
IE 5 5.50.4134.0600

Pentium (r)
64.0MB RAM (hahahahaha)

32-bit PC card

In other words old and useless.

Get damn small linux working on it and it will be perfectly useable. There's other good lightweight distros about. You should be able to make some use of it.

btw getting damn small linux running is as simple as downloading burning to cd and then dropping the cd into the drive and booting up.

And in English? (Sorry, I am a complete luddite!)

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Just a thought and nothing against linux but if M.Nouthall is a bit of a luddite perhaps he'd be better off with just MS Word or a text editor if all he wants to do is write.

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

basically its an OS and applications on a single cd. It will configure itself, allow you to use the hard disk, etc. There's a word processor, spreadsheet, web browser, email, instan messaging. It runs really well on old systems, much better than win95 at any rate. Just drop in the cd, answer the questions, I think the only one is what kind of mouse do you have and away you go.
