for a present for someone i wd like to buy a non-expensive and lots-of-fun "teach yrself to draw" book

i actually saw the perfect ideal best evah possible version of this yesterday in greenwich open-air market - it wz by famed children's illustrator quentin blake (and someone else) - but the stallholder was not around and the ppl i were with were in a hurry to be off so (rather than just half-inch it, which is bad karma for presents as you know) i had to leave it

so do any ilxors have good suggestions?

The only "how to draw" book I ever used was Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain which is quite technical and probably not very fun, but still incredibly good and I'd highly reccomend it, but it's probably not the sort of thing you're looking for.

It's all about how to draw something and have it come out looking like what it is, rather than about how to draw and be all creative and stuff.

"Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" definitely taught me how to draw, and probably helped to get me into art school. So I also recommend it.

I have right side, but have never cracked it open. I think I'll give it a go, has to be better than my last worthless drawing prof./class (who taught us zero technique - yo, I'm in intro to drawing for a reason!)

does right side teach you to draw FACES and ppl generally, or is it abt perspective etc?

(it has such a strong vote that i am tempted to get it for myself - but present-wise it's about learning to draw better cartoons of ppl really)

it breaks drawing down into five cognitive skills (seeing: edges, spaces, relationship of objects, light and shadow, the 'whole') and then gives you specific exercises designed to address your weaknesses and improve on each skill individually. from there you get exercises that allow you to integrate all the new skills until - poof - you're a drawerer.
