Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 April 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(Actually it has to be ratified still or something but apparently it won the design competition.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 April 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. UCLA colors.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 April 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

kind of israeli isn't it?

..., Monday, 26 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the colors are a little too 70s beach towel

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the yellow strip stands for the Kurdish minority

ouch.

Stuart (Stuart), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Iraq could not continue using its flag from the Saddam Hussein ear.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ew. Tyrant wax.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it looks v. pretty.

anthony, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Mahmud Uthman, a Council member, is quoted by al-Jazeera as saying: "I think there are issues more important to concentrate on now than the changing of the flag."

That's my favorite comment on the new flag, so far.

I think eliminating any green, with its strong association with Islam, is probably not going to bother a lot of Iraqis. In fact, I think it would be better to keep the old colors and just re-organize them (with or without a Kurd stripe).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I smell a "this is the thread where we re-design the Iraqi flag in MS Paint" thread coming on....

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not going to bother a lot of Iraqis? Why do you say this? Are there any Muslim countries with no green in the flag? And yes, that light blue is rather too close to Israel's.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Indonesia doesn't have any green.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

or Turkey.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Turkey is secular, thanks to Mr. Ataturk

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

question of definition here then Dadaismus.

country where most ppl are Muslims vs. country where state religion is Islam.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice use of complimentary colors. Something about it seems a bit off, though.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmmmmmmm, well one of the most important things about Turkey is that it was expressly formed as a secular state

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Something about it seems a bit swedish.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus, so why has the Turkish flag got a star and crescent which is far more of a Muslim symbol than the colour green is?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

this design would make a nice pair of boxer shorts

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha, I fear MarkH has hoisted me on my own petard and stitched me up like proverbial kipper! Damn his eyes!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yay! Iraq has a new flag!"

all we need now is a government!

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

they should have done something with the elephants from the babylonian set of "intolerance":

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus, SORRY that was a typo. The not was NOT meant to be there.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What is that, "Night Falls on Sweden?"

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Its weird that the blue in the crescent is a couple shades lighter than the stripes. Maybe its that whole israel thing.

I really want to see the flags that didnt make the cut in this 'competition.' Probably has some shit like ahmed chalabi's smiling face on a field of pink or a photo of bush and sharon shaking hands.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You need to come to the Hollywood / Highland shopping mall.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I love the old Iraqi flag. Fuck this.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Bottom line: it's wussy.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i think they chose soothing colors in a pathetic attempt to pacify the insurgency.

Debito (Debito), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it makes me think of ralph lauren or tommy hilfiger. It is pretty though.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

they should have made the crescent darker and gotten rid of the stripes. that would be boss.

Debito (Debito), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(Weirdly enough, the url contains the phrase "trophyoftexas" though I certainly didn't find it by searching under any of those words.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

is it possible to make a flag like those baseball cards that seem to move when you turn them at a different angle?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like an ironic trucker hat.

LC, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the Oxford United FC colours! Come on!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I'm sure the red, white, and blue would have gone over well

oh man, i want those sooo bad!

"hi, do the nu-Iraq sneaks come in size 15?"

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I read that they shifted the colors in the flag but i havent seen any pictures yet. i think they made the lines at the bottom the same color as the crescent to avoid the israel comparisons.
