i had train tracks for a couple of years, from age 11-13 i think. i was glad when i didn't have to wear them any more.

do braces look attractive, in some cases? did you ever have to wear them?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, for teeth!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I WANT them. We couldn't afford them when I was young, and now I look like Mike Skinner. Ned and Ken C. can corroborate this.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I hated having to wear a brace when i was younger. I had train tracks on my lower teeth & a removable one on the upper teeth. I was grateful to get rid of it all. The train track one really hurt when it was tightened & it had a tendancy to rip up the inside of my mouth. eurgh! dud, dud, dud!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

when i wz like 7 or 8 i tht they were the coolest thing ever and very much wanted to wear em

when i wz like 12 i got to (a plate really, rather than braces, so my vampire incisors cd shunt into the right slot)

within a few weeks, using my tongue, i cd flip the entire plate out of my mouth w.tremendous force!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

and i still can so watch it!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i was given one of those removable retainer things after the tracks came off. i never wore it, because it affected my speech and looked vile.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to put rubber bands on my teeth so that I could feel as cool as I thought the little kids with braces were.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Last year.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They are the Devil's work. If God wants ye to hath teeth like David Bowie ye should have teeth like David Bowie.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I had train tracks from age 14-16 or so. I hated them and never wanted to get them. I still bear a mild grudge that I actually did have to get them against my will, but I guess I don't know what my teeth would have looked like. I maintain that the orthodontist was a smart man who scared my mum into thinking I needed them. My teeth were fine!

Yeah they were a total dud, pain and speech difficulties and trips to the orthodontist whose breath always smelled like stale coffee (which on my last visit I told him, as a future reference thing), I'm still not convinced they didn't prevent me from being able to close my mouth for more than 10 seconds, ever.

Once he didn't snip the wire in the train tracks close enough to my teeth and despite my remonstrations sent me home to eat dinner, at which point the wire managed to pierce my tongue for me. I had to write down what was happening and then remove it myself, by yanking it out.

I think this was the most painful and freaky thing which has ever happened me.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

So much resentment.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think braces ultimately made me more insecure about my looks, cos I had braces for 2 years of my teens.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

But how do your teeth look?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

maintain that the orthodontist was a smart man who scared my mum into thinking I needed them. My teeth were fine!

Aha! Has anyone ever met a poor orthodontist?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"But he's got a brace!"

"I thought it was a piercing!"

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

well my previous dentist said I needed root canal treatment & the current one says that was nonsense! Phew!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My teeth look the same as they did when I went in there, all very straight except the front ones protrude a tiny bit.

Trust me when I got them people asked me what was the reason. I must have repressed the memory, I remember being furious with my parents for ages afterwards.

It came up at dinner recently and I went off. Perhaps I need to seek professional help.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

there was one girl i had a major crush on as a teen, who had braces. we worked in tesco together. i think the braces suited her, i run into her every now and again now that she's brace-free and i reckon she looked better with. anyway, i snogged her a couple of times, then she dumped me. :-( Braces = tales of woe.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the single wire on the plastic plate. upper jaw only. Is this a retainer? My knowledge of orthodontic terminology is quite sketchy.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, that's a retainer. and what vile things they are.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

you can still taste yr dinner hours later!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a fondness for "toothy" women and also gaps in the two front teeth - is this allowed by body/ mouth fascists these days?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when I was leaving on the last day (after taking him to task on his filthy breath) he gave me like a guideline certificate which ended with "you must wear your retainer at night, EVERY NIGHT, FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE"

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What room did he operate out of? Room 101?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as greedy dentists/orthodontists go...

My chiropractor and orthodontist apparently disagreed on whether or not I needed braces (Yes, the teeth kind. Weird, yes, but read on.)

I asked my dentist about the annoying clicking my jaw always does and she said braces might help, as my jaw was trying to compensate for the unevenness of my teeth. When I related this to my chiropractor he smirked, said "bullshit!", put on latex gloves, and started doing some really frightening stuff with the muscles INSIDE MY MOUTH that hurt worse than I think anything else ever has, before or since. He said the muscles were just tight and it was causing my jaw to go out of whack and click. He taught me where to press on the muscles when my jaw starts clicking, and it has stopped ever since. He was right -- the orthodontist WAS full of shit.

But it was still really creepy when he put the gloves on and told me to open my mouth.

And I still want braces.

"Why must you turn my practice into a HOUSE OF LIES????!!!!"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a totally sexy gap in my front teeth dadaismus!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend recently had his jaw wired shut for 10 weeks to realign it or something. I think I'll burn him a copy of the Kanye West album to give to him when he has it removed.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Good for you marky! If you've got it, flaunt it baby, flaunt it!

Wot, there are no orthodontists in Hell? This I find hard to swallow.

Ned and Ken C. can corroborate this.

You must excuse me. Mike Skinner ain't nowhere near so cool looking.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Braces weren't necessary for me either, but the dentist smooth played my parents and I got them anyway. I'd constantly break off brackets because I refused to eat pussily (eww I'm imagining the precarious unnatural feeling of the wire bending when chewing tough meat) and now I have breaking-off-bracket dreams as much as I have teeth-crumbling dreams. My parents have money so they got me the fancy transparent ones that actually turned a murky brown/beige because I've been smoking since I was 13. This is kind of painful to talk about but I had them taken out early, about two weeks before I ran away from home for a few months, and now my teeth look worse than pre-braces. I think that when I had my mouth closed they made me look a little older and handsomer as they helped my jawline a little. Some people look good in braces, esp. girls. Not just the teen porn thing (but cum dripping off braces looks insane and honestly pretty hot) but it can make certain people of any age look more fun and open if they have naturally fun and open faces. And they're shiny. Anyway fuck braces.

NOT SAFE FOR WORK

LC, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"On my braces!!!!"

LC, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst thing about my braces experience: I had to get four permanent teeth removed before getting them to 'make room in my mouth' for the teeth to close, and now I lack my sharp canines (and will thus make a horrible vampire).

I like my girlfriend's semi-crooked teeth, wouldn't have them any other way.
