Seattle Protest planned for Focus On The Family's James Dobson rally at Safeco Field, May 1st

Now, Gareth will be in town this weekend, so I'm NOT planning on suggesting we ditch him for this protest by any means, however, a) I wanted to spread the word on this, regardless, in hopes that you other folks know other people in Seattle who would be interested in helping out with the protest, and b) seeing if there's a possible chance of swinging by the protest for a small bit just to see how things are proceeding and give support (no matter who we, individually want to give support to)...(and who says protests can't be entertaining?)

Anyway, here's the fwd I got:

The religious right has rented Safeco Field for May 1, 2004, to hold an antigay rally. They are basing it on marriage rights, or I should say the restriction of marriage rights.

They are planning to bus people in from around the state. They are currently predicting 10,000 attendees.

Focus on the Family's James Dobson will address this assembly. Dobson is a high visibility, arch-homophobe, and he will be a bid [sic] draw for them.

We are organizing a "Welcoming Party" for them. We are not about to let them arrive with no resistance. Here are the bare-bones details, and as more information is developed I will forward it to you:

Assemble Saturday, May 1, 2004, between 10:30 AM - 11AM. The earlier you arrive the better.

Where: Corner of S. Occidental St. and Royal Brougham, north end of Safeco Field.

What to do: At this time we have many details to work out. For now, MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND SHOW UP. SPREAD THE WORD TO EVERY SUPPORTER OF GLBT RIGHTS THAT YOU KNOW. MAKE SIGNS. We will provide some signs, but the bigger the variety and quantity of signs the better.
This is a legal, peaceful protest of the right wing coming to Seattle
to hold a rally that opposes our rights.

Although Dobson and crowd have every right to have this assembly, we have every right to protest it.

We cannot let them come to Seattle and throw their bigotry in our faces without fighting back.

This is a PEACEFUL, if loud, protest. The Seattle police are likely to keep us on the opposite side of the street, separated from those attending the May Day for Marriage rally. This is as it should be
to avoid violence and face to face confrontation. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BLOCK PASSAGE TO THE RALLY. We can legally be there as long as we DO NOT BLOCK SIDEWALKS, PARKING LOTS, ENTRANCES, ETC.

Please spread the word so that our side can have a great turn out. Updates are forthcoming.

This is, of course, making a very bold assumption that all of us FAPpers will be awake/conscious/not hungover during this, but still....

The best part is the top left silhouettes.

"Oh honey, let's show our support to keep marriages heterosexual by rubbing the tip of our lips together.. but just for a few seconds! As long as we don't get CRAZY or anything."

Would love to hear the, um, music they have advertised for this.

Photos from the event need some serious floating Gareth head action.

"mmmm, your breath smells like the raisin muffins you made from the recipe of the last issue of Reader's Digest."

(ok, i promise to stop right now)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No, just imagine 'raisin muffins' as a safe coded word for something else. And then it gets fun.

At the very least, we should inundate the site with lots of phony registrations bearing offensive names.

Minimal coverage nationwide, it looks like.

Well, that's what I expected. I'm kinda surprised CNN put it on their front page site, though.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Focus on the Family, the Colorado group that is one of the pillars of the Christian right, has announced it is cutting 202 jobs.

The jobs will be eliminated by a combination of laying off 149 members of the staff and removing 53 vacant positions from the organization chart, The Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs reported. About one-fifth of the positions are in management.

Focus officials said that four of its eight magazines will now appear only on-line.

So 2009's a good year for many states to throw down pro same-sex marriage initiatives then? Which states would they allocate their money to, if they didn't have enough, I wonder.

DENVER (AP) - Conservative evangelical leader James Dobson has resigned as chairman of Focus on the Family but will continue to play a prominent role at the organization he founded more than three decades ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Dobson notified the board of his decision Wednesday, and the 950 employees of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based ministry were informed Friday morning at a monthly worship service, said Jim Daly, the group's president and chief executive officer.

Dobson, 72, will continue to host Focus on the Family's flagship radio program, write a monthly newsletter and speak out on moral issues, Daly said.
